You need to find the marriage certificate, then. If he married in England it will tell you the name of his father. If he married in Scotland it will tell you the names of both his parents. I've had a look at ww.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and there is no matching marriage up to 1933, when the online index ends. Also http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl, but nothing there either. So the chances are that he married some time shortly after the end of both indexes. Did he have children? If so, roughly when was the first one born? Anne

    3. > I am new to the list and i am trying to find information about > Robert > BREMNER he was born 1906 In ANGUS If that is really the only thing you know about him, then your best plan would be to look for his birth certificate at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and hope that there are not too many Robert Bremners born in that year. If you have more information about him, it might help to home in on the right person. Did he marry? If so, when, where and whom? Have you seen his marriage certificate? Did he died in Scotland? If so, have you seen his death certificate? HTH Anne

    1. [ANGUS] Wallace and Hill
    2. Judy Lessard
    3. Hello everyone, I am researching my ancestors with the last names of WALLACE and HILL I am looking for suggestions/ideas on finding more info on my ancestors: Robert Wallace (also spelled Walace) and Ann Hill. I have found a little information on-line. On Ancestry.com -- Scotland 1841 and 1851 cenus: They are found in the Dundee area, where Robert was employed in the textile industry. According to the census, they were born in County Monaghan, Ireland. Robert was born about 1803 - 1806, Ann Hill about 1811. IRELAND: I have been in touch with a Monaghan Co., Ireland, researcher, Jack Storey, who felt that they were Presbyterian. He has many records of Wallaces and Hills, but the records are not from the early 1800s. I have purchased these records but haven’t looked at them yet. I wonder if I could figure out which families Robert and Ann belonged to, amongst the Wallaces and Hills. SCOTLAND: According to the 1841 Scotland census: Robert Walace (Spelled with one “L”), was 35; born about 1806; born in Ireland; Civil Parish: Liff, Benvie, and Invergowrie; County: Angus; Address: Village of Lochee; Occupation: Flax roling Overseer; Parish Number: 301. Living at that address were his wife, Ann Hill, and two sons: John Wallace, 5; and David Wallace, 2. I did find on the IGI (familysearch.org ( http://www.familysearch.org )) a christening record for David: June 12, 1839 at the United Associate Congregation, Lochee, Angus, Scotland. I can go to the local Morman Church library and order the microfilm and see what other info may be on the christening record. According to the 1851 census: Robert was age 48, so born abour 1803; head of household, spouse’s name: Ann; Where born: County Meraylar (this must be a misspelling of Monaghan), Ireland; Parish Number: 282; Civil Parish: Liff and Benvie; Town: Lochee; County: Angus; Address: North Donalds Land; Occupation: Spinning Mill Overseer; ED: 102; Page: 31; Household schedule number: 110; Line 12; roll: CSSCT 1851_63. Other household members: Ann Wallace, age 42; John Wallace, 14; David Wallace, 12; Mary Wallace, 7; Margaret Wallace, 5; and William Wallace, 2. There are 6 other women living there, all employed in the textile industry. I have found on the IGI (www.familysearch) site, the baptismal record for one more of the children: Margaret Lawson <Walace> christened May 18, 1845 at the United Associate Congregation, Lochee, Angus, Scotland. I’ve always known of my great-great grandmother as being named “Margaret Lawson Wallace.” I’ve never figured out where the “Lawson” came in. But one of the people living in the household according to the 1851 census was “Margaret Lawin” age 28, and there is a “Lawin” (no first name) age 17. Perhaps Lawson is a misspelling of Lawin. It was interesting to find her listed as Margaret Lawson (Walace) in the IGI christening record, as none of the other children are recorded with middle names. According to my grandpa, his grandmother, Margaret Lawson Wallace, was proud of her Scottish heritage and would tell him stories when he was a youngster living in the wilderness near Clare, Michigan. According to my grandpa, “She moved with her father and brothers and sister to Canada when she was nine years old.” Therefore, they came to Canada about 1855. They lived first in Montreal and then moved to Ontario, and lived in London, Bothwell, Hamilton areas.” I am thinking that Anne Hill Wallace, died in Scotland, or perhaps on the way to Canada. There are so many Wallaces in the Ontario records (ancestry.com and Ontario censuses) with the same names as what I’m looking for (the father, Robert, and the brothers), that I haven’t been able to identify, for sure, my Wallace ancestors in Canada. I have found their sister, Mary and her husband, in Ontario. Margaret Lawson married Thomas Kelly Bell. I have found baptism info on Ancestry.com for several of their children. They moved to Clare County, Michigan, in the 1880s. Any suggestions or info are welcomed! You can easily confirm all this yourself by looking up the birth and marriage certificates at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (SP). But read on before doing this. In the 1881 census Alex M Dundas, aged 31, drapery commercial traveller was at Zetland House, St Vigeans with wife Jane H D Dundas, 29 and children John D, 7; Alex M, 6; Edgar R, 2. All were born in St Vigeans. This address seems to be in Princes Street, which is in the part of the town of Arbroath which is in the parish of St Vigeans as opposed to the parish of Arbroath. > I have also found another Alexander Dundas born 1853, wife > unknown, with > the children shown below, (possibly born in or around > Kirriemuir) > John (1874-) Alexander M (1875-) Edgar R Dundas (1879-) Ada > Jane > (1883-) Harold H (1884-) Stanley C (1887-) Ralph L (1890-) > Norman > (1891-) Anymore information this family would be > appreciated. It won't have escaped you that Alexander Dundas in Arbroath/St Vigeans has children matching the first three of the above children. There is an Alexander Dundass, labourer, aged 28, in Kirriemuir in the 1881 census. He is unmarried and living with his widowed father, sawmiller, aged 63; sister Betty, aged 29 ; brother David, tailor, 24; sister Isabella, factory worker, 22; brothers James, 18, apprentice tailor and William, 16, labourer; sister Margaret, 13 and niece Agnes, 8. All born in Kirriemuir. These look like the family of Alexander Dundas and Agnes Malcolm, married in Kirriemuir on 22 September 1850. All of their family were born in Kirriemuir. In your place I would look up both these Alexander Dundases in the 1891 and 1901 census at SP - this will help to sort out which of the children you have listed actually belong to which Alexander. It will also cost you less than looking up all the birth certificates separately. > Jane Hardie Davidson's parents were John Davidson & Margaret > Thomson, > that is the only information I have about them. According to the International Genealogical Index (IGI) at www.familysearch.org Jane was born in St Vigeans on 2 July 1851 and baptised there on 4 July 1851. No siblings are listed. Her parents were married in St Vigeans on 9 September 1850. You should be able to find them in the 1851 census at SP. There are a John Davidson, flax mill mechanic, 62, with wife Margt, 58 living at 14 Colville Place, St Vigeans. This is also in the part of the parish St Vigeans which is in the town of Arbroath. He was born in Arbroath and she in Kelso, Roxburghshire. If this matches the information in the 1851 census, you will know that these are Jane's parents, and you can look for their death on SP. Go for Margaret first because she will be indexed under both her maiden and her married name. The IGI lists Alexander Mann Dundas, son of John Dundas and Mary Mann, born 5 December 1849 in St Vigeans. This exactly matches the Alex M Dundas in the 1881 census. This couple were married in Arbroath on 22 March 1839, and also had Isabel, 1842; Mary Ann, 1844; Marjory Robertson, 1847; James Soutar, 1853; David Duncan, 1857; and John, 1860. You can get definite confirmation of Alexander's parents' names from his marriage certificate, also on SP. By the way, it is always useful to say what your source is for the information you start with, as it helps people to know where to point you to, and also whether, as in this case, there seems to be some ambiguity or doubt about its accuracy. And can you be sure that the baby who died in 1911 was Jane's child? She would have been aged 60 by then. It is more likely to be a grandchild. Hope this helps. Anne

Then use them to look the family up in the 1901 census. This will give you a better idea of the birth years of the children, bearing in mind that the census was taken in early April. Use this information to look for the birth certificate of one of the children. Probably best to go for Jane because she has a middle initial. Her death certificate will tell you her mother's surname, and the date and place of her parents' marriage. Then get the marriage certificate, which should tell you the names of all Jane's grandparents. Happy hunting! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
