I have some Fentons I can throw into this ring. Thomas Fenton married my 4th great grand aunt Jean Wyllie, born 1752 at Tillyarblet, Lethnot. They were married in Lethnot in 1783 and had four children that I know of: Mary and David (twins), 1784; Susan, 1786; John, 1790, all born and baptised in Brechin. Susan married James Webster in 1807 and had 7 of a family. One of them, Fenton Webster, married Ann Milne in Montrose in 1851 and died in 1866. Fenton Webster and Ann Milne had one known child, Anne Webster, born 1853 in Montrose, She married William Mackenzie in 1875 in Montrose and had four known children. I do not know what became of any of the other Fentons or Websters. James Webster and Susan Fenton must have died before 1854, and probably before 1851. They were in the 1841 census. Anne

Hello Ian, Thank you for sharing your instances of Fentons. Although I suspect this line may have come from Glenisla, which is not quite as close to Tannadice as I'd have liked, there is still a possibility that - especially with the name David in the mix - that there is a connection at some point in the past. Consequently I will save a copy of your message in the 'evidence' file which I compiling. Hello Duncan, I have some Fentons: James Fenton b 8 Nov 1859 Tannadice to David Fenton and Jean/Jane Tosh. These are relations though I have no spouse for James. The above David had a brother James Fenton born 1835 Tannadice who is not related to me. I have other Fentons all in the 1800s plus era but no Peter or George. I have Cramonds [Margaret born unknown who married Alexander Whannel born 1783 Arbroath; and William who married Jemima Tosh in 1864 Arbroath]. I have a Robert Tosh b about 1710 Tannadice who married a Jean Hendry 1735 Tannadice. Hi Lyn, Don't think this Adamson family connects directly with my own, but if you would like to contribute some more info - directly to me if you wish - then I will add them to my database. The plan is to map the distribution of Forfarshire Adamsons over the 18th to 21st centuries. And if anyone is aware that this work has already been done, or is in progress somewhere, I would be grateful for further info. regards Pat "What is this life, if full of care, We have no time to stand and stare ..." There is a project associated with CWGC which is offering help to many, and a chance to give something back to many more. The War Graves Photographic Project http://twgpp.org/ is aiming to get all CWGC stones worldwide photographed and into the databases so that they can be provided to family and also preserved as some of the cemetaries come under threat. You can also find them from the CWGC site - click [Help and information] and the [Photographic requests]. They rely on volunteers who are willing to go out and take photos for them. I've been doing it for a year, and it's amazingly rewarding - apart from all the thankyou messages from families, you meet the nicest people in CWGC cemetaries! Thank you for keeping us informed, as to the CGC efforts on our soldiers behalf. I wrote them and the Thai-Burma railway centre, after seeing the documentary "The REAL bridge over the river Kwai" to thank them for their effforts at telling the truth of what happened. I heard back from the center, about the cause of death for both my Powrie POWS killed working on the railroad. I never expected to find out their cause of death, as the Japanese obviously didn't care how many died or kept records, but was delighted to see someone had kept a record. If anyone else needs information about their rellies, please contact the wonderful men at the Thai-Burma rail centre at the address below. The CGC take care of my relatives graves in the farthest reaches of the world. I fill in information on their list of the fallen. I am grateful to them and other organizations for their care. MARY IN Oregon From: admin@tbrconline.com To: BRUINSWOOD@aol.com Sent: 4/16/2009 11:55:09 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time Subj: POWRIE Hello Mary Thank you for your email and kind comments. I have attached tributes, compiled from our research, to the 2 men whose details you included. David was sent out of Singapore in October/November 1942 to work on the railway with Group 2, firstly being located at Chungkai Camp (close to Kanchanaburi) then sent up country towards Tha Khanun and Nam Chon Yai where he sadly died from Cholera in June 1943. Because cholera victims were normally cremated his remains were originally interred with 4 other such victims at the Nam Chon Yai Cemetery in Grave No 34. This is why he was reburied in Kanchanaburi in a collective grave after the end of the war when they recovered all the men from the jungle cemeteries and relocated them to one of 3 cemeteries, Chungkai, Kanchanaburi (Thailand) & Thanbyuzayat (Burma), under the control of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission where they can be cared for forever. John stayed in Singapore until April 1943 when he became one of the unfortunate members of the 7000 strong group known as "F" Force, about half British and half Australians. This force were compelled to walk around 300 klms to where they were required to work on the railway close to the Burma border. Approximately 60% of the British lost their lives, mostly in the 6 short months up to the end of the railway construction in October 1943. John was amongst the very ill who were finally transported north to the 'hospital' camp established for the vast number of seriously ill men from "F" Force. It was in transit to this Thanbaya Hospital Camp (in Burma) where John unfortunately died of Dysentery about half way through the journey. This was how he came to be buried at the 95 KILO Transit Camp Cemetery in August 1943. As his initial burial was in Burma he was relocated post-war to the Thanbyuzayat Cemetery (Burma), his final resting place. I have also attached a map of the railway route so you can see the locations. Hope this helps add a little to your information. Dear Listers, I have stumbled across this James ADAMSONs Australian Imperial Force attestation papers from January 1916. He stated that he was born in Letham, Forfarshire, was aged 44 years and 10 months, usual occupation stated as gardener and married to Susan who resided at Wentworth Road, Burwood, NSW. Does anyone have any further information about this James? I dont think he is directly mine, but I collect Adamsons in Forfarshire/Angus and Im keen to place him with his Scottish family. From his attestation papers, it might appear that he was born about March or April 1871 and if that is the case, from the 1881 census records I have three possible families for him. Hi all You may have seen the item on the news about the WW1 war graves at Fromelle http://www.cwgc.org/fromelles/ You may not think it concerned Scots troops but there are a few listed (click project then casualty lists) I have seen several from Fife, a few from Lanarkshire, at least one from Aberdeen, a few from Stirling and perhaps some I missed There is also a list of Australians All those I checked on the CWGC died 19th or 20th July 1916 Even if unconnected its a story worth reading They all deserve a decent burial Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK)
1881 census at 44 Marketgate, Arbroath Thomas Bremner, seaman, 36, Arbroath Ann Bremner, 36, St Vigeans Robert Bremner, 3, Arbroath John Bremner, 1, Arbroath The marriage is not in the IGI at www.familysearch.org which suggests that they must have been married between 1875 and 1877. You should be able to get the marriage certificate from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (SP) - this will tell you the names of Thomas' and Ann's parents. at 19 Fergus Square, St Vigeans William Fox, mechanic in flax mill, 40, Barry Mary Fox, 41, St Vigeans Ann Fox, reeler in flax mill, 18, Carmyllie Catherine Fox, spinner in flax mill, 16 David R Fox, worker in flax h mach, 13 Mary Fox, flaxworker in mill half time worker, 11 William S Fox, 6 Isabella Fox, 3 Madeline P Fox, 1 All the younger children born in Arbroath. Fergus Square is in the part of the town of Arbroath which is in the parish of St Vigeans as opposed to the parish of Arbroath itself. William Fox and Mary Reid were married in Camyllie on 11 April 1862. Again, the marriage certificate will tell you the names of their parents. I see that the IGI has an 'extracted' reference to William Fox, born 18 and baptised 28 February 1841 in Barry to David Fox and Janet Smith. There are two references to the marriage of David and Janet; on 2 April 1831 in Barry and on 23 April 1831 in St Vigeans. This means that the banns were called in both parishes, and tells you that at the time of their marriage one of them lived in Barry and the other in St Vigeans. The original entries will clarify which; you can view them at SP. The other children of David and Janet were: Margaret Fox, baptised 3 April 1832, Barry Alexander Fox, baptised 4 July 1836, Barry James Fox, baptised 4 July 1836, Barry Agnes Fox, baptised 30 December 1838, Barry Ann Smith Fox, baptised 15 April 1843, Arbirlot Mary Fox, baptised 13 April 1845, Arbirlot Isabella Fox, born 5 January 1848, Arbirlot (a 'submitted' entry) There is a 'submitted' reference saying that Alexander Fox married Ann Hill on 18 June 1862 in Barry. This can be verified by getting the marriage certificate from SP. (In the IGI, an 'extracted' reference is transcribed directly from an original source, such as a parish register, and such references are usually reliable, but should be checked by looking at the original. 'Submitted' references could be from anyone, and in some cases may be pure fiction, so it is essential to verify them by tracking down an original document.) The 1841 census records David Fox, linen hand loom weaver, 30, with wife Janet, 30 living in the village of Carnoustie, parish of Barry, with Catherine, 7; Alexander, 5; James, 5; Agnes, 2 and William, 3 months. All were born in Angus. That's probably enough to be going on with meantime. HTH Anne
