I guess George died fairly early as there is no sign of him in the censuses and she worked as a grocer. My grandmother's middle name was Beattie. What you say about the family is very interesting. According to Mary's census details she was born in England so the Muckart family must have spent time there. For instance: I search only one surname, as I'm doing a one-name study. Powrie, was often spelled Pourie, so I can use soundex which ends in lots of Pirie (, or Poore, another surname entirely) so I can use Po*rie, which gets me both Powrie and Pourie without a lot of "false positives" (wrong surnames) But you will find which works for you. Doing one spelling at a time may work better for your particular research. Military deaths are in their own parish, "military returns" during WWI and WWII. Census, wills and what burials there are, you'll also find on Scotlandspeople. They hold the online contract for the General Registrar of Scotland, in Edinburgh. You won't be able to see military marriages & births, (they're on Find My past) or the PRO http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/. You also need someone to search for foreign births of Scottish citizens. Those are not online. But if there in person, you can see everything to 2008...no restrictions. http://www.findmypast.com/ is another subscription service for U.K. records It's a great website, but you'll get more if you write an outline of attack, and stay organized, look for births or marriages in 10 year spans for common names, or search one parish, if you know about where the records "should be". A little practice, like anything helps. Ask for help again for terms you don't understand or if you hit a brick wall. Remember the IGI and Scotlandspeople are based on mainly Presbyterian records. If you don't find what you want your family may have been Catholic or Methodists... Don't give up!! Until your walls fall... Don't order extracts, as someone to help look something up, or if there is an IGI films, look on those. They are expensive, and there are other ways to get them. Coat of Arms are also online at Scotlandspeople website. They don't always have artwork with them, but if you have gentry, they are interesting to download them. Join a rootsweb list, after you have done enough work to find which Shire or County. I'm still learning a great amount from My two lists. I'm posting interests for new members, all you old friends know already. I research Powrie and their kin. It was spelled Purrie back in 1500's and 1600's, Pourie came along in the 1700's except in Fife where it can still be found. Margaret Powrie married John McLaren in 1893 Burnmouth, Newtyle, Perth, Scotland, and I have 5 children, thanks to Jim Powrie in Italy. One son Alistair Stuart McLaren, fell in WWII. It's harder to find those soldiers and sailors of women who married out of the family. He was the gunner in the RAF 35th Sqad., and flew in a Lancaster pathfinder until his death. Always good to learn of various battles, and different regiments, I don't know all about various planes and tanks, etc. But these men are worth a few Internet searches...and a lot of reading. Adding Scottish and World history is necessary in order to be put into proper context. I'll never get all I know now into a book, but I've enriched my life....It's a process NOT a destination. But of course, all of you know this. If I talk to my sisters about this though, their eyes glaze over...they want my results, not progress reports, but my family online, understands when my biological family don't care. Their loss! Hi Tom The reason your previous post was ignored is that being a board post the person you posted it would not see your reply unless they also were a list subscriber (assuming you replied in the same way last time as you did this) The gc-gateway@rootsweb.com is a non receiving address so will go nowhere With gatewayed postings (which come from the board) you have to post to the board (click the link in the posting) (in this case) http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/5577/mb.ashx You need to follow that link and post your reply there When you post to the board, your post will be gatewayed back to this list, so you only need to do it once and it will be part of the thread. The poster has not put a contact email address on their profile so you cannot reply internally on Ancestry's system unless you also subscribe to Ancestry, they would however receive your post via the board, it would be worth suggesting to the poster they add an email contact to their profile Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tom Bigley" <tom@bigley.org.uk> To: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com>; <angus@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 17, 2009 12:15 PM Subject: Re: [ANGUS] info about John Edward Mann Angus >I have some details on John Edward MANN and his parents but last time > I replied to "tarves_1" with family connections it was ignored. > Don't know who or where you are. > > Tom Bigley > Edinburgh > > On 17 May 2009, at 09:22, gc-gateway@rootsweb.com wrote: > >> This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. >> >> Author: tarves_1 >> Surnames: Angus/Bedford >> Classification: queries >> >> Message Board URL: >> >> http://boards.rootsweb.com/ >> localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/5577/mb.ashx >> >> Message Board Post: >> >> Looking for any help tracing information about John Edward Mann >> Angus b:1935. If he is still alive he would be 74 and nothing comes up that indicates his death in Scotland (Scotlandspeople) up to 2006. If he was still resident in UK in 1953 at age 18 he would have been liable for military service so perhaps a record of this can be found. However, he may have left UK and on findmypast.com I find a record of a John Angus age 5 born (calculated from age)about 1934 sailing from Glasgow to New York on the American Importer (United States Lines)departing 26 October 1939. It might be wise to determine if this was your John and whether he then remained in USA or maybe Canada before following up possibilities in UK. Hi Everyone, Is anyone following the family of Robert FALCONER b.circa 1801, Dunnottar, married Christian JAMES or JAMIE b.circa 1801 Dunnottar, in 1818, in Dunnottar, (Christian's name was JAMIE on the OPR Marriage drawn from Scotlandspeople). So far I can only find two daughters, 1]. Mary born 15th May, 1822, Stonehaven). On Mary's OPR Birth Christian's name is JAMES, and 2]. Jane born circa 1831 Dunnottar. Mary FALCONER married James MURRAY( born Stonehaven, 13th July, 1823) in the Mariners Church, Aberdeen, in 1845. Jane FALCONER 1st. Husband was George WISHART (b. circa 1818, Glenbervie) Shoemaker by trade. 2nd Husband was Robert BURNESS (b.circa 1830, Stonehaven). Slaterby trade. I cannot trace any other children between 1822 when Mary was born and 1831 when Jane was born. Does anyone know this family? Regards, Margaret
