    2. Copying a object is easy enough then attach it to an email to send it. Use print key, so you can choose the file type,as some make the image or file too large to email. You certainly won't find a high concentration of people with the surname Muckart living there. It is an enigma. The John Muckart buried in Forfar cemetery is my grandfather's brother John. I would certainly appreciate a photo. I can return the favour if you have any relatives buried in Greyfriars graveyard, or the large Wellshill cemetery, or Kinnoull graveyard in Perth. I completed a project to transcribe all 242 gravestones in Kinnoull graveyard before Christmas. I also took photographs of them all using film. Author: sandiirvine Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/2153.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear Grant, I may have jumped the gun on Mary Muckart. My Mary Beattie has children Elizabeth (my direct ancestor and born in England also), William (a joiner), Jean, Margaret, Thomas and Isabella in the 1841 census. There is also a possible connection with an Alexander Beattie living in Edinburgh (born in England and would have been Elizabeth's older brother) who has a sister Isabella, born in Montrose and the right age, visiting in 1851. Unfortunately Elizabeth married and died before the introduction of certificates so I can't confirm her paternity but assumed that the Mary (nee Muckart) dying at about the right age in Montrose was my Mary. Also because Elizabeth's first son was called George. Are you certain that the mother of Catherine is David Muckart's sister? I'm trying to find a death certificate for William, who was still living in Montrose in 1881 and working as a joiner. Unfortunately he doesn't have any Georges in the family. Note Ancestry has wrongly transcribed my Mary and her daughter as born in Ireland. The Scotland's People censuses clearly have an E not an I and they transcribe it as England. Is the Will any help on this point? My Mary is definitely in New Wynd up to 1851 but the only Mary Beattie after that is living in 19 Murray Street (ie Mary Muckart, according to her death certificate). Perhaps local street directories may hold the key. best wishes Sandi Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The Montrose Burgh Processes index also sounds interesting. In the past the sheer distance between me and the Archives at Montrose Library was a distinct limiting factor. Now that I have moved I may be able to find the time to properly inspect the records they contain. My hunch is that the John Muckart, who was the Starch Manufacturer, was closely related to David Muckart, the Shipping Merchant. John may have been David's nephew or possibly even a younger brother. They apparently had a good going business and their starch products were highly regarded. The company traded as Shand & Muckart for a time. David Muckart shows up in some of the Trade Directories for the period. Grant Muckart Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It said (p.284) that John Muckart started up a starch works in Seagait by the 1840s, later operated as the Montrose Starch works under various owners. The Forfar sasines index, 1620-1700 has no Muckart in it. The Angus Archives are bound to have some documentation about your David Muckart. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: gmuckart1 Surnames: Muckart, Murkar Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/2153.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Pat, As soon as I received your reply I immediately went to the front page of Scotlandspeople website and stuck in the name Murkar in the free surname search box. This is a wonderful free window into the Scotlandspeople database. It will not give exact results but will tell you if a surname is in their database and in which records it shows up in. It will also tell you the frequency with which it occurs. This alone can be very helpful. From my search I can see that Murkar as a Surname is effectively unknown in Scotland. There are only 2 people with this surname in the whole of the 1881 Census for Scotland. There are also 2 deaths recorded under the surname Murkar in Scotland in the 1855-2006 time period. There are 4 entries in the O.P.R.'s for births and 3 entries for births and marriages. My hunch would be that these entries all relate to one family who lived in Scotland in the 1850-1900 time period. You may well find that these Murkars relate to yours. It would be interesting ! to see if these Murkars also lived near Gamrie. Surname drift is almost always ignored by newcomers to family history research. I know I did when I first started. It was only when I kept bumping into more and more evidence that my surname had been spelled in many different ways in the past that my cosy modern views started to crumble. We all tend to impose our understanding of the world as it is today onto any attempt we make to view the past. It is quite easy to think that the way things are now is the way things have always been. It takes some doing to set aside our modern day pre-conceptions and try to see the world as it was 100-150 years ago. To answer your question, I have not come across this surname as a known variant of the surname Muckart but I suppose it can't be ruled out. I have found about 20 or so variants that all lead back to Muckart. The main concentration of Muckarts were in the southern half of Kincardineshire in the 1700-1850 period. Before this they were in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. It would not t! ake much for a Parish Clerk to write the surname down as he heard it and record Muckart as Murkar. Especially if he was not a local and the father or mother having a child baptized spoke in a broad aberdonian accent. Remember most farming folk would have little use for book learning, as they saw it. Grant Muckart Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: gmuckart1 Surnames: Muckart, Beattie Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/2153.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Sandi, It's rare indeed to get a reply from one of my Muckart posts on the message boards. Thank you for taking the trouble to reply. Muckart is a very uncommon surname and there does not appear to have been a time when there were more of us. I have not figured out David Muckart's relationship to me but experience has taught me that all the Muckarts in Scotland are related to each other. They may be a small group but they are all part of one large tree. Most of the info I have on Mary Muckart, your third great grandmother, comes from David Muckart's will. I too could not find anything much on George Beattie, and came to the same conclusion as your self. He appears to have died sometime before 1850.I show Mary as having two children, a son called David, and a daughter called Catherine. Unfortunately this is all I have on her children. I am sure she had more children than this but is all I have at present. I have pencilled in John Muckart and Jean Findlay as possible parents for Mary! but this is just speculation at present. That is very interesting that you mention England as Mary's birth place. Is London mentioned as being connected to Mary's birth place? I am always happy to share info with fellow researchers. Anything you can do to fill some of the gaps would be much appreciated. Grant Muckart Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
