Thanks Mary, I'd never heard ot that website, but tried Vivisimo. When I asked to search the web it put me onto this other website which, as the name suggests, does cluster the results on the left hand side. http://clusty.com/ Tina ----- Original Message ----- From: <BRUINSWOOD@aol.com> To: <angus@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 26, 2009 7:29 AM Subject: Re: [ANGUS] Memorial Day finds in my Scottish Dunlop family > Try the search engine _http://vivisimo.com/....search_ > (http://vivisimo.com/....search) for soldiers and sailors. Try the search engine _http://vivisimo.com/....search_ (http://vivisimo.com/....search) for soldiers and sailors. That search engines means Yahoo in Italian, so I'm told. The LDS workers in Salt Lake, taught it to me. It clusters results. Mary In a message dated 5/25/2009 11:21:50 P.M. I'd never heard about these 2 young men's involvement in the USA Civil War, and their fates before now.As to their relationship to me. John Dunlop of Drumboy Fenwick and Agnes Paton had as children 6 sons and 3 daughters. The sons were James, David, Robert, Hugh, John, and Dewar (my gggrandfather). The daughters were Ann, Mary Paton and Agnes. The Civil War soldier Swinton mentioned above was a son to the brother David, while the James mentioned above was a son to the brother John. I was quite surprised to learn of this involvement in the USA, where both cousins died. James had joined as a private in 1861, coming down from his new home in Ontario, was promoted twice to sergeant, and then wounded at Antietam VA. In 1863, when his regiment (12th Massachusetts) was disbanded, he was offered a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 59th Mass. He then recruited his newly arrived cousin, from Scotland to Ontario, Swinton. In 1864 they were involved in the Battle of the Wilderness Virginia, where Swinton (age 20) was shot and died. In July of that year, James was captured and died (age 23) in a Confederate prison camp at Danville NC, of sunstroke a few eeeks later. Whether this was due to a lack of water provided to the prisoners, who would have been kept outside, or as a result of wounds I don't know. Having lived as a child in the South, I understand how sunstroke would have easily occured in late July there. Two weeks prior, he had been promoted again to 1st Lieutenant. The fathers of both these young men were fine Fenwick folk, steeped in the Abolitionist sympathies of Fenwick I'm sure. Before the war, little Fenwick paid the way for the great black Abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglas to sail from the USA, a crowd gathered to hear him speak at the parish church, and he was presented with a large sum for the cause. I guess it shouldn't surprise me that these 2 young men would put their lives on the line, and pay the ultimate price for a great cause. Sad, but very appropriate for our Memorial Day today. I'll be rereading their records today. The spelling of the Cable name has varied over the years depending who was writing it down. I have always worked on the theory that all the Cable families from the Forfar / Angus area are related however once we get back before official registration it is difficult to prove relationships without access to the records. It is difficult checking the records from NZ hence the reliance on list memebrs and other family members to assist with trying to find the family links. Through this list I have had some wonderful assistance which is why I have managed to get back as far as I have however there are some relationships in the family that have proved difficult to establish. I think the death records for the period 1750 to 1855 will eventually show the link. Hopefully someone somewhere will find the vitual link which will tie the family altogether. Hello List I have been researching the Ross Family Dundee for a number of years. Is there anyone else researching this family. Thomas Ross b c1822 Kings County Rhode married Margaret Nolan b c1825 died in childbirth 1865 Thomas Ross b c1852 Dundee married Isabella Morrison 1858 Tradestown Glasgow. in December 1858 Dundee. died Dundee June 1947. My Grandfather Thomas Ross was born 1879 Dundee. married1898 to Jane Beattie in Glasgow. The Ross Family have lived at 6 Queen St. or 67 Cowgate on any info I have. I have never been able to find the deaths of the elder Thomas Ross's. I would be very interested to make contact with anyone who is researching this name or could help. Thanks Lorraine NZ
Hello Allan, Re: JOHN CABLE. We have been in contact with my Keble,Cable,Cabel families some time ago but you did not think there could be a connection but could there be in fact a connection?????? My g-g-g-g-g-grandparents were David Keble & Isobel Taylor their family were: Helen b 1 Mar. 1761, Carmylie. JOHN b 31 July 1763, Carmylie. Elizabeth b 23 Aug. 1767, Carmylie. Patrick b Dec 1769 , Carmylie. Patrick is my g-g-g-g-grandfather. At birth his name was registered as Patrick Keble but when he married Ann Hardie April 1795 Carmylie/Arbroath his name was registered as Patrick Cable / Peter Cabel. Could JOHN KEBLE also changed the spelling of his name & could this be the JOHN CABLE we are both looking for?????? I am also looking for marriage or any information on Patrick & John's sisters Helen & Elizabeth. It is very possible that they too are now Cable/Cabel. If anyone has information on any of the names I mentioned I would very much like to hear from them. There are a few possibilites but nothing I can confirm. Kindest regards, Jessie (m.s. Cabel) I have John Keble born 31 July 1763 in Carmylie. Parents David Keble & Isobel Taylor. > -----Original Message----- > From: angus-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:angus-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of > gc-gateway@rootsweb.com > Sent: May 22, 2009 4:48 PM > To: ANGUS-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [ANGUS] Cable family - Carmylie, Forfar, Dunnichen > > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: steelo > Surnames: Cable > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.g > eneral/5582/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > Seeking information regarding John Cable and Mary Sheppard > married 22/5/1793, Forfar. Hi Elaine In looking at the archive of messages, I saw your messages on death records back in 2004 and found two entries that are of interest (I only joined the list today). I was wondering if you could send the details for the following: Dundee - 1943 Eliza Hamilton MARSHALL, 45, John BURNETT, Helen Leighton MARSHALL, Robert Burn MARSHALL These are my grandparents and great grandparents (I don't suppose you have any details on Robert Burn MARSHALL himself? He died in 1935) Also, Forfar - 1859 Elizabeth COLVILLE, 69, Alexander DALGETY, Elisabeth JOHNSTON, not recorded Elizabeth Colville is possibly my 4x ggrandmother. If this is my ancestor, then I have a David Mitchell as her spouse. Thanks much Alana - Montreal, Quebec

Margaret, If you are able to copy the thumb-nail, couldn't you try enlarging these? May take a little while, but try.
