His father was John Nicholson, a farmer. I have tried Scotlands People and the register office but no luck and now my only hope is to try to search the original parish records for the above years. I think the parish records are kept at the National Archives, Edinburgh and I am asking whether anyone would be kind enough to search the records for me - I think he may have belonged to the Maisondieu Lane Burgher Church in Brechin. I hope these records still exist. I would be grateful for any help or advice. Thank you Susan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I believe there were workers in the mills who originated in Co. Offaly (formerly Kings County) Ireland and who also worked for Goodbody's Jute Mill in Clara, Co. Offaly. I believe they may also have gone back and forth between Dundee and Offaly (Kings County) Ireland in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Any leads or suggestions appreciated. Catherine Cable, b1807 married David Robbie from Cortachy and Clova, date unknown. David worked in the Washmill at Cortachy. They had Mary, b1830, James, b1832, John, b1834, Margaret, b1838 and David, b1841.Father David died 1874 and was a widower. Catherine was alive in 1861 but I cannot find her death after that date. Their daughter Margaret married James Kidd in 1860 and they had Laura, Maggie, Jane Ann, William David and James between 1860 and 1867. Maggie died aged 2. Young James does not appear in 1871 census so may have also died young. Mother Margaret died 1874 but I cannot seem to find the others and wonder if they emigrated? I also have a marriage for a Mary Robbie to a Charles Christie that maybe my Mary born 1830 but cannot find anything more on this couple. Would be keen to make contact with anybody connected to these families. Thank you. Regards Allan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Those extra bits of info are very welcome as I find it difficult to get much info off the web on Scots people, compared with England. I will give scotlandspeople a go. I found good info on the Dale School but the Mars training vessel makes sense - the Thomas family in Australia were avid boatbuilders and sailors. One became a pearl-diver and skipper at Broome on the n-w coast of WA. Best wishes and many thanks, Ross PS My grandfather was a hard man but, when I research his background, a new-found respect builds as you uncover how hard life was for many people in those days. Hi again Barbara As you have probably seen you successfully posted to the board which in turn was posted back to the list so all is well The boards are a little different to use but a little practice is all thats needed, if you go via the blue link on any gatewayed post, you will see an option to "change to flat view" which makes the thread more readable one message after the other So you don't need to give up as you did it already :-) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Nivard, > > I went into his message for 5th, clicked onto blueline & received host of > messages from rootsweb, > think I shall give up this time. > Thanks for your kind advice, > Barbara
Ross, Why not purchase 5GBPounds of units from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, which gives 30 units to use. It takes 1 unit to view a list of persons born in an area in a time frame, the, 5 units to view a person's b.d.m., you are able to print a copy of the certificate. These date from 1855, so possibly youd find James birth, census from 1861, parents marriage & death, & whether there are siblings. Re: his parents could be on www.freecen.org.uk, The pound equates to about $2.40 Aus, is worth every bit for records available. Regards Barbara, Melb. Aust. apologies if earlier email was sent. As there are is generally close interest in Irish links with Scotland 1911 Ireland Census Site Updated http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ A further five counties have been added to the National Archives of Ireland's 1911 census website. Returns for Cork, Donegal, Wexford, King's County and Galway can now be searched online. Antrim, Down, Dublin and Kerry were released last year. Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)
