John, Have you tried freecen.org.uk? re: 1841 census, there is a Jane Dempster age 18, living at Montrose with parents & siblings, a Janet living at Arbroath. Re: John, there are 3 in Montrose, in 20's in 1841, but he may have lived elsewhere in Angus, there are 23 listed. This could assist, then try scotlandspeople as Ann suggests. If you don't have the full text of the proclamation, you can view it at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk at modest cost. Once you have the full text of the proclamation of banns, that's all you are going to get. Most marriage/banns records in the pre-1855 parish registers do not give the names of the couple's parents, and when they do, the majority list only the bride's father's name. The only way you will get the full names of their parents is if they died after 1855 in Scotland, or in some other place where parents' names are on the death certificate. Scottish death certificates can be viewed at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk as above. However I note that no female J Milne or Dempster is listed in the death indexes, so it seems that she at least must have died outside Scotland. I see from the IGI that they had at least three children, baptised in Montrose between 1848 and 1853. This means that they should be in the 1851 census in Montrose, which should tell you their ages and parishes of birth, and just might contain some other clue. You can look up the census too at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk HTH Anne

William Abercromby Farquhar Gordon, born circa 1898, died circa 1986 in Montrose, son of James Henderson Gordon and Mary Ann Marr William married Jennie Connison Pattison, born 1890 in Aberdeen, died circa 1966 in Montrose, daughter of James Young Pattison and Margaret Jane Smyth. William and Jennie were married on Oct. 22, 1924 in Aberdeen. He paid rent to a landowner. Whether or not the tenancy was passed on to the next generation depended on the tenancy agreement. In many cases a tenant farmer would have been succeeded by a son, but there is no guarantee. Westertown is the name of the farm, presumably in the parish of Craig. HTH Anne

The two usual ways of describing a person's place of residence was 'in' or 'of'. 'Of' means that they were the owner. 'In' means they just live there, and sometimes 'at' is used instead. As a tenant, there is a good chance that there are some surviving estate records - in the Angus Archives, National Archives of Scotland (NAS), or Aberdeen or Dundee University Archives. These could show when or whether he paid his rent, the terms of the tack (lease), the valuation of the property on his entry and exit, and perhaps a map of the estate. Much depends on what period you are interested in. Tenants were also more likely to have gravestones compared with other occupations.The Airlie estate papers in the NAS are very extensive with good runs of records fom the 1690s. Generalisations about leases can get complicated as much depended on the estate and the period. If a tenant died during the term of the lease, it would be continued by his heirs - his widow or a son (not necessarily the eldest) - until the end of the lease period. Whether it was renewed at expiry depended on their circumstances and the attitude of the factor and the landlord. Often preference was given to the sitting tenant as they were a known quantity provided they were willing to pay the market rate and had a good payment record. Entry to leases was at Whitsunday - it was tough if the tenant died just before the Whitsunday when the lease was due to expire. I have one case in the 1750s where the widow was turned out by her brother-in-law, who 'inherited' the lease, within four weeks of her husband dying before Whitsunday. She did not take it lightly and the dispute went on for several years in the Sheriff Court. From the 1810s there was an increasing tendency to advertise leases for sale in local newspapers rather than by word of mouth and by recommendation. At earlier periods leases were commonly 'at will' i.e. no fixed period and the tenant could be evicted anytime subject to the standard 40 days notice before Whitsunday, etc. Lease periods varied - 3 , 5, and 7 years were common. One of the determinants was the length of the crop rotation as one complete rotation was expected during the life of a lease. Longer leases were granted for mills e.g 19 years. 19 or 21 years became commoner when the tenant was expected to make capital investments in improvements and he needed this time to make a return. When these changes took place varied greatly between estates. Hi Margie, This simply means that the person is renting the place, in this case a large farm, from the owner of a larger estate. Westerton is in the parish of Craig which is just south of Montrose. You can find it on Multimap using the postcode DD10 9TN. As far as I know there is no automatic right of a son (for example) to take over his father's tenancy it seems that this often happens in practice.
