    3. Sorry Wendy Just saw the date on the subject line. Did his parents go to NZ as well? Kindest Regards Kristina Cameron (NZ) -----Original Message----- From: angus-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:angus-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Wendy Howard Sent: Sunday, 28 June 2009 6:47 PM To: ANGUS@rootsweb.com Subject: [ANGUS] James Ogilvy SWAN b.1865 Moatmill James Ogilvy SWAN is my great-great grandfather. At his 1896 marriage to Susan Mary Craske WATSON in Maheno, New Zealand, he declared that his parents were William Swan, a farmer, and Catherine Swan, nee WHITTON. He gave his birthplace as Scotland. Family sources tell me that he was born in Moatmill. The only place by this name that I've been able to find is in Angus. I have not been able to find a birth record for James at Scotland's People so far. I've looked at a few possibilities, but have yet to find one that fits these parents. Hi Adrian There is indeed a wealth of information there I find a good ploy is to search on the County name (if necessary the old and the new) A search for Angus finds (among others) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Angus or Forfarshire The Land and People Descriptive and Historical Vol 4 Dundee OR Memorials of Angus and Mearns, an account, historical, antiquarian, and traditionary; (1885) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Also key words such as *History Scotland* or *Parish Register* (without the *'s) Or a place name such as Dundee finds :- Historical description of the town of Dundee (1836) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Thanks Nivard - I suspect there's all sorts of FH stuff in archive.org if > only we knew what to search on, so any help is welcome. > > Adrian
