Author: GordonPertJohnson Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/2122.2.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: You might find it useful to read an article which was in The Scottish Genealogist, March 1982 (vol.xxix, no.1), pp. 18-24: "The Swankies of Arbroath and Auchmithie: an unusual local surname." It certainly does not appera in Black's "The Surnames of Scotland". With many fisherfolk from Ferryden and Usan in my database, I also have 24 Swankies who were married into my families. Gordon. 1. [ANGUS] Help save a library
    2. Dear genealogy friends, In case you haven't heard, the Governor of Michigan, Jennifer Granholm, has issued an executive order to close the Library of Michigan in Lansing (our state capitol), which I understand is the 10th largest genealogical collection in the U.S.A. Unless the state legislature votes by October to override her order, the library will close, and the building probably used for office space. The Michigan materials will go to Michigan State University (not as easy to access), and the information for other states and countries will be dispersed in some other manner. Please read the note I just received and use the link and cast a yes vote. It is for a poll in a Lansing newspaper and I would assume that the Governor (or her staff) reads it. Note that it does not ask if you have ever used the Library of Michigan, only have you ever done genealogical research at "a library." The poll ends at 7 p.m. US Eastern Standard Time tonight. Every vote helps us here in Michigan. But just think -- it could happen in your locality next. We could live with a temporary closure because of lack of funds, but once the materials are dispersed it will probably be well nigh impossible to reclaim them. If you live in Michigan and would like to write the governor or your state legislator, contact me for more information. Irene, in Michigan ------------------------------ Hi there, We received the following tip. There is a poll on the LSJ web site asking if people have ever done genealogy research at a library. 25% yes, 75% no. Maybe folks to log on and vote. The poll is located in the center of their home page, http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/ **************Hot Deals at Dell on Popular Laptops perfect for Back to School (http://pr.atwola.com/promoclk/100126575x1223105306x1201716871/aol?redir=http:%2F%2Faltfarm.mediaplex.com%2Fad%2Fck%2F12309%2D81939%2D1629%2D9)

    1. Re: [ANGUS] Help! Vista and Scotlandspeople images
    2. Belated thanks to those who sent me suggestions - I am very grateful. (I am slow in offering thanks because we've been having our kitchen torn out and rebuilt, so very busy.) IrfanView seems to be working fine on opening both the old and new certificates, and I was especially happy to hear that it was suggested on Scotlandspeople ( I hadn't noticed before). It did take a while until I figured out to change the paper size and check "best fit." The suggestions from Mary Ann in Melbourne I've printed out for reference. Even if it turns out IrfanView is working on the certificates, I think her help is going to be much appreciated on other Vista problems. It's been said before, but can't be said too often. This group is the best! Irene, in Michigan In a message dated 7/22/2009 11:11:41 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, IPollands@aol.com writes: Please help an old lady! I can't complain about my new computer because it was a gift from my son. But it has Vista on it and I can't seem to open my files of certificates that I have previously downloaded from Scotlands People, including a new one from today. Fortunately I had no trouble having them transferred from the old computer, but if I can't open them....... I always used MS Picture and Fax Viewer and had absolutely no problems. I understand Vista does not have that program. I find the file I want, click on it and have the option of which program to open it with. I think I've tried every program with no luck. But when I click on Office Picture Manager it has a misc. selection of about a dozen previous certificate files--but I can't seem to add the one I want. And I tried, as a test, to print out one of those that did appear and it filled the page but cut off a lot along the edges. And it was very slow, as if it were printing out a quality picture. Any simple solutions? I am not computer smart, only know enough to do my genealogy searches. And my generous son lives elsewhere and won't be able to open my mail until he gets home after work. Meanwhile I'm tearing my hair out!!! Irene, in Michigan **************What's for dinner tonight? Find quick and easy dinner ideas for any occasion. 3. I had a look and the free search gave me a few burial dates but only because I knew the date they died. Often it threw up too many possibilities to make it worth while buying the information. It would cost a small fortune. Also accuracy is a concern. One relative had the information that he was buried Angus 1900 and his date of death was 1920, one can only assume that his burial was a little premature.
