    1. [ANGUS] Problems with ANGUS List
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: gbell152 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/5892/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I apologise for posting this message here, but other routes seem to be blocked. Postings on this Message Board are normally copied to the Rootsweb ANGUS Mailing List, and replies via links on that List are added to threads on the ANGUS Message Board. But there is currently a problem with posting directly to the ANGUS Mailing List - messages are bounced with an "unknown address error" message. And attempts to report this to the "Listowner" are similarly bounced. I am posting this message here in hopes that it will reach the Listowner. I had to drop out of list participation, although I did read a note here and there. My project for the year involved my poor Bundys of Bedfordshire and the Old English Poor Law, which I have some understanding of now. I'd like to compare that with the experience of the poor in Scotland at some point. Mine didn't do too badly in a small rural parish in England, but I'm certainly aware of those who had a much worse time of it. More likely to be Walker. Never came across a Halker spelling in Scotland If that is the case, I have a marriage record in Meigle 1833. The informant for paupers or persons in some kind of institution is often the head of the institution, who has no record of the deceased's parents, and probably little interest. Such errors in marriage certificates are rare, though, and often where the spouse has lost contact with one or both parents at an early age. The curious case of the 17 age must be down to either badly-written numbers, misreading of the certificate (Ancestry has many misreadings), or trying to pretend one is much younger than the truth.... Still, it adds extra interest to the detective story that is genealogy. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Only that there were lots of Wilkies already in Tannadice. I don't think the Disruption really has anything to do with the absence of records. Records of deaths/burials before 1855 are very patchy at the best of times, so finding one is a bonus rather than not finding one being an omission. The Tannadice parish register only has a few deaths in it - 1722-23, and nothing much later. Certainly no systematic attempt to record burials in the first half of the 19th century. I must admit, I was following on from the family 'legend' about an Ogilvy connection which led to the David Wilkie/Elizabeth Ogilvy line which from what you say is likely to be a dead end. Scotland's People lists 150 baptisms of Wilkies in Tannadice, and today I found the families of three of the brothers of my great-great-great-grandmother Elizabeth Wilkie, who is one of those 150 Tannadice Wilkies. There were three other brothers who survived to adulthood and were involved in erecting the family gravestone in Tannadice kirkyard, but I have yet to trace any of their families, if indeed they had any. The name of John W and Isabella Rattray's elder son points to John's father's name being James. The tradition is First son after father's father Second son after mother's father Third son after father My lines are short on Jameses of an age to be the father of John W husband of Isabella Rattray, however. There are two in the IGI, one in 1798 and one in 1799; I suspect either that one is a figment of someone's imagination or that the 1798 one died in early infancy. I think just about every Scottish family had an Alexander, James, John and William, so these names are effectively useless in tracing family. I'm just working through the 150 Tannadice Wilkies to see if they shed any light on anything. I'm still interested to know what information Al has that suggests John W husband of Isabella Rattray was from Clova. This would be very useful in helping to dispel some of the gloom! The trouble is that there seem to be 2 (at least) separate lines of Wilkies with the same first names around Cortachy and Tannadice and it's easy to get confused as I did. The stumbling block is that the John Wilkie husband of Isabella Rattray died young and certainly somewhere about 1844 and that rules out the direct link with the David Wilkie/Margaret Nicoll line. However, it's a bit odd that the elder son was named James when John might have been expected (the younger was Thomas doubtless after Isabella Wilkie's father Thomas Rattray). As I posted, I'm trying out a family memory of an Ogilvy connection and there is certainly record of a marriage between a David Wilkie and Elizabeth Ogilvy in 1806 in Cortachy. I don't have an SP credit account, as I have a colleague who looks up in Edinburgh anything I need copies of, and I pay her. That way she can query anything that is unclear or seems wrong. Gordon.
