    1. [ANGUS] Ann and Mary LYNCH in Dundee
    2. Jenny Blain
    3. Dear all - I'm still pursuing LYNCHs and have found out quite a bit. Currently am chasing Ann LYNCH born around 1834 in Dundee and her daughter Mary LYNCH. Ann is in the 1841, 51 and 61 censuses in Dundee, in the 61 with daughter Mary, for whom I now have an 1860 birth record for 'Marian Jane Paterson Lynch', illegitimate, daughter of Ann Lynch (the address is the same). Ann then disappears from the censuses, though I haven't found death or marriage records. It's quite possible, though, that she had an informal liason with somebody and so could disappear completely from census records. Mary was in the household of her aunt-by-marriage Agnes Osler or Lynch (wife of George Lynch, who seems to have been away on a boat or some such) in 1871 and 1881, at 3 Crescent Street - and then she disappears. I haven't found likely marriage or death records for Mary. Could she have emigrated? So, this is a plea to aks who has access to emigration records - any sign of a Mary (or Marian or Mary Ann) Lynch, born 1860, appearing from Dundee after 1881? Jenny PS I've now got lots on two other Lynch children born in Dundee in the early days of Irish immigration in 1820s - James and George. Anybody got connections as I've stories to share about them? :)

    1. [ANGUS] General interest - churches and ministers in Dundee, 1775
    2. Jenny Blain
    3. I found the book I mentioned in the last post, so have transcribed the list of Dundee Churches. This is from "The First History of Dundee, 1776", adapted by A.H.Millar in 1923 from the manuscript of an 18th century author who may be Alexander Nicoll, merchant, who dated his manuscript in 1775 though then annotated it further with some chronological events up to 1778. Millar retained spellings etc. as in the original. There are various other bits and pieces which may be of interest, giving snapshots of his time (though his 'history' is a bit iffy). If you've names of people who may be convenors, council members and such I can try to look them out, though the organisation of the book is a bit haphazard by our standards of today. The list of churches and ministers is from pp. 160-162 of the 1923 publication. Jenny ---------- CHURCHES & MEETINGS. Here are four Churches of the Establishment, Two of which are as yet Erections, the other two serving as Chapels of Ease, but the preachers of Each have handsome Salleries, and the three Ministers who Serve the other cures have Each £105 Sterling, only the Parson will have about £20 or £35 Sterling more. The Ministers that serve the cures of the Old and New Churches and have the Town divided to them in Parishes are….Mr Robert Small. Dr. Jas Blanchall. Mr Jon Snodgrass. The Minister of the Cross Church is … Mr Jas Thomson. The Minr of St. Andrew’s Church is … Mr Thos Raitt. Those of the Qwalifyed or English Episcopal persuassion have Chaneting house, Viz: St Andrews Chapel the Minist of which is … Mr Tomlinson. The Nonjurors, which are likewise Episcopals, have also their Chapel or Meeting house their Minister is … Mr Jas Raitt. The Glassites, so called from Mr John Glas, late Minister of Tealing, who was deposed for his different Sentiments in Religion, and who gathered a considerable Congregation there and has Spread thro’ Britain, but whose greatest number is in this place. Here he raised his first congregation, here he lived, & here he died; the preachers or Elders are … Messrs Robt Ferrior. Wm Morison. Wm Lyon. Da: Read. The Burgher Seceeders have a Church here, their Minister is … Mr Balintaine. The Antiburgher Seceeders have also a Church here the Minister of which is … Mr Barlass. Another Congregation of people here that are distinguished by no appelation as yet but only from the name of their Minister who Separated from the Antiburgher Seceeders when they imposed the renewal of the Covenants on their Members his Name is … Mr Andw Scott. The Methodists have also a considerable Society here and a preaching house; their first Settlement there was in the year 1764. There is a Society of Baptists or Anabaptists as they are commonly called, but they have no preacher neither keep open Door. There is also a Congregation of Papists or those of the Church of Rome who have a priest Mr (blank) but keep not oppen door these not having tolleration, though they are winked at. --

    1. [ANGUS] church records Re: Findlay/Finlay and Milne
    2. Jenny Blain
    3. Hi Julie, Some things aren't available at all, alas - some records can be accessed via NAS (now NRS - in person, not online) but there's not much available for 'associate sessions' at this time - I see there's some material from Forfar but starting only at 1788. Worthwhile seeing what's there before you hire anybody. It's useful to look at the first statistical account for each of the parishes as it may say how many seceders there were in the 1790s. A little later than your time, I know, but useful. For instance, for Kinnettles: "The number of families attending the Established church is 102; the number of persons of all ages attending the Established church, 530; the number attending the chapels of Dissenters and Seceders, 2 ; of Episcopalians, 16. Divine service at the Established church is generally well attended. The average number of communicants at the Established church, 240. The average amount of church collections yearly, for religious and charitable objects, £22: 7s. 3d." Whereas Forfar, with a considerably larger population, also had more dissenters: "Examinable persons in communion with the established church, at Whitsunday 1790, about 3,213 Annual number of communicants,- - - - - - - - about 1,800 Examinable persons of the Episcopal persuasion, about 240 Examinable persons of the Secession, - - - - - -about 150" These extracts are taken from the webpages at http://www.monikie.org.uk/statisticalaccounts-index.htm, which has a few of the accounts online and plans for more. (I see the webmaster is looking for help with transcription...) All the first and second statistical accounts are online at http://edina.ac.uk/statacc/ (click 'browse scanned pages') but it's easier to copy/paste from html pages such as the Monikie link. They give you a sense, too, of the growth of weaving and changes in its organisation. In general, in the small rural parishes such as Kinnettles, if OPR records are extant most people are in them, except in areas with a lot of seceders (try Galloway, ouch!). In towns more people may be members of seceder churches. And in cities like Dundee, by the end of the 18th century a considerable number of births/baptisms may not have been recorded anywhere, and there are also many more secession churches, so finding people in the late 18th century can get pretty silly. The secessions get underway in the 1730s and pick up speed as they go. Somewhere I've a volume that lists the various churches in Dundee around 1776. So for you, trying things like the weavers' and tailors' records, where they exist, may help. 3. Thanks Irene, Gordon and Jenny. You're exactly right and I could kick myself for assuming all records were available from OPR. I see now that it's only Church of Scotland that are available. Now my question is: how do I access non-CofS church records? Are there any available online or must they be searched in person at the churches? Will I need to hire a researcher? Sorry to be asking newbie questions, but I'm new to Scotland research (have been slogging my way through Ireland -- and I'm sure you realize what an impossible task that is!) and got quite giddy when I saw just how many records ARE available in Scotland. Any guidance/insight will be most appreciated. Regards, Julie

    3. **Irene is quite correct. The online indexes are only to Church of Scotland registers, not all of which are complete, and also not included are the registers of the Episcopal Church of Scotland, the Seccession Church, and other non-C. of S. denominations, including the at that time rare Roman Catholic church. Also some families either refused to have the child's baptism recorded, or the Session Clerk forgot to write it up in the register, or the family did not have the child baptised. All of which shows that the non-appearance of a name in the indexes does NOT mean that the only solutions are those in the indexes. Look for other evidence: from gravestones, trade records , wills and testaments, old family bibles, for example. Criminal records on the NAS online catalogue can be quite informative... Gordon. 3. Hi Julie, Have you taken a look at a parish map for Angus? I'd think that the Dundee one is rather more unlikely, for two reasons. Dundee was a place starting to attract migration at that time so it's more likely that people were going to it than from it (though I have a counter example), and it's more likely that the son of a shipmaster would stay connected with shipping in some ways, whether in Dundee or another port, though again not impossible that he might become a weaver. However I'd investigate other members of the Kinnettles and Rescobie families, and particularly look for similarities of names with those of the children of Charles and Agnes. Airlie is quite close too, though. Also of course look for possible marriages of a Charles Finlay or Findlay elsewhere and check for deaths of all the Charleses, as there are some death records from that time period. Unfortunately some of the parish records from around there then are pretty sparse, and you may not find out, but have to settle for a balance of probabilities. 2. We don't know that. All we know is that there were no births or baptisms recorded in the church records that have been indexed so far. So, unfortunately, there may be even more possibilities than the four you have found. I have the same problem with my Ann WHYTE, married to William IRVINE in 1823 in Kirriemuir. From the 1841 census I have an approximate age for her and that it said she was born in the county, but she died before the 1851 census and I can only guess which of four (or more) possible couples are her parents. I need to find out if this Charles was a) the son of John Finlay and Jean Wilson, born 1757 in Rescobie, b) the son of Robert Finlay, shipmaster, and Janet Blythe, born 1753 in Dundee c) the son of John Finlay, born 1755 in Airlie d) the son of Thomas Finlay, born 1762 in Kinnettles There is no Charles Findlay born in Forfar during that time period, but once Charles and Agnes married, the family stayed in Forfar for the next three generations, then moved on to Dundee. Also need to find out who Robert Milne's parents were. Sure hope someone can give me some guidance on this! Julie Parks
