    3. Jute didn't start to take off until the 1830s, though there was a little imported earlier. The fibres were brittle and needed processes which were developed around then, before it could be useful. However Dundee was a textile town long before jute, which was why jute could become established there. (It was also a whaling port and whale oil was used to process the fibres when jute got going.) The town made cheap linen cloth, originally from the flax grown in Angus then from imported Baltic flax. The flax, and later jute, was heckled on combs with iron teeth. Dundee attracted a lot of incomers from various areas, in the mid to late 18th century and through the 19th, connected with weaving and the industries associated with this. 3. Marilyn, I've looked for Powrie and Innes in all the Dundee cemetaries. There are lots of Powrie's, but none of them match yours. There are only a few Innes's, but again none of them match yours. It's unlikely that we would find the Powrie Children, as they were all born after 1855, and the books are primarily pre-1855, although some later ones do slip through. Sorry I can't be more help. I don't know if you are aware of Powrie Castle - I do know that Mary(Bruinswood) is aware of it. The castle is currently up for sale. You may be interested in having a look while you get the chance. http://residentialsearch.savills.co.uk/property-detail/232655/list/property-for-sale/scotland/dundee/dundee/dd1/0/0/1000000000/10.0/hi/gbp/1 If the link does not work, look for www.savills.co.uk and search for Dundee good luck Doreen --- On Sat, 6/8/11, Marilyn Arnold <[email protected]> wrote: > From: Marilyn Arnold <[email protected]> > Subject: Re: [ANGUS] Logie Burial Ground (Dundee) > To: [email protected], [email protected] > Date: Saturday, 6 August, 2011, 2:54 > And, if your MI book is still out and > you're willing to do other lookups, is there a: > > POWRIE -- Family #1: > John Powrie (1814- > Isobella (Bruce) Powrie (~1811? - > > > POWRIE -- Family #2: > John Powrie (1833-1919) (son of JOhn and Isobella above) > Jane Haddon Innes (1834-bef 1881) > > Children: > Helen Powrie, b. 1859.  Died bef 1861? > Isabella Bruce (Powrie), b. 1861.  wife of Robert > Hutcheon Low > Georgina Thompson (Powrie) Doll or D'all or Dall, 1865, b. > wif of John Dall.  He died bef 1891.  Georgina > died aft 1919. > Alexander Stephen Powrie, b. 1868.  Died bef 1881. > Elizabeth Innes Powrie, b. 1871.  Died bef 1881. > Note:  They had 2 other children, but they moved to > the US. > > INNES:  Believe Jane Haddon Innes Powrie's siblings > (most of) and parents were buried in the Howff, but if you > see Helen (Reid) Innes, Jane (Powrie)'s mother, I'll gladly > claim her!  She was b. ~ 1803. > > Thanks, in advance, for your assistance. > > Marilyn in US > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Friday, August 05, 2011 9:04 PM > Subject: Re: [ANGUS] Logie Burial Ground (Dundee) > > > > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this > mailing list. > > > > Author: heather51us > > Surnames: > > Classification: queries > > > > Message Board URL: > > > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/5902.1.1.2/mb.ashx > > > > Message Board Post: > > > > I found this thread interesting. Is it possible she was cremated? As far as stillbirths are concerned its the registration that is under tight access control, the burial if recorded would not have any privacy limitation, no more than the little girl you seek. Which is to say, sometimes not simple at all... But still-births are so sensitive that something close to a total prohibition is in place for any information relating to them (see earlier post in this thread) and if you'd gone in there mentioning "still birth", the shutters would have come down until you'd proven all sorts of things. Or at least, that's my understanding. There are no guarantees for you even now, because it would be foolish of me to say that attitudes and records then will give us the answers we would like now.
