Sounds like his own minister wouldn't pronounce it on Henry Balfour. Obviously he wasn't obedient as he was charged with "Contumacy". I wonder if I'll get any more information on this case in future pages.

    2. I have looked on DeceasedOnline.com and found the following: Kirriemuir Cemetery Grave Reference D/B/26 (that could also have read G/D/26 -- so would need to check into both locations) Taylor, Jane burial date 13 Oct 1908 Taylor, James burial date 12 Feb 1877 Taylor, Jane burial date 17 nov 1869 age 80 Hope that this was helpful. 3. Thanks Nick. Yes, I did say the two I mentioned were earlier but mused at the possibility that later two were descendants. Some of my later Duncans were in Dundee having come from the Edzell, Montrose and Lochlee areas. I know of one other Ian Gammage but he is in England so the one in Canada is a third. I have some connections to a Gammage family in Canada but to Ian so far as I am aware. I am in Australia. If anything does crop up on the Duncans it would be great to hear. 3. Doreen: Thanks for checking. So far the burial location of my Powries is a mystery! (My Innes' were in the Howff). But, I was VERY excited to see the pix of the Powrie Castle. It was up for sale a few years ago and I got to see pix then, but there are more pix with this new sale. Very, very neat! While there's no connection between the castle and our Powrie Family (Mary) it's still neat to see such an incredible place with the name attached! (There's Innes House on the other line, outside Elgin -- no "house" by US standards -- wow. My cousin and I stayed there in 97 in a flat in the back. very, very neat!) There are lots of Powrie's, but none of them match yours. There are only a few Innes's, but again none of them match yours. It's unlikely that we would find the Powrie Children, as they were all born after 1855, and the books are primarily pre-1855, although some later ones do slip through. Sorry I can't be more help. I don't know if you are aware of Powrie Castle - I do know that Mary(Bruinswood) is aware of it. The castle is currently up for sale. 3. Bruce: I's think that the "surface railway" is the railroad system. I understand that the pension records can be illuminating, if in fact he worked for the RR. SEE: http://www.rrb.gov/mep/genealogy.asp. If you have access to Footnote.com via your local library or FHC, you can find post 1930 City Directories for Chicago ("the windy city"). In case he was in Chicago before 1930, here's an online dir for 1928/9: http://www.chsmedia.org/househistory/polk/Menus/PolkA.pdf. Do you have access to ancestry? I really appreciate your thoughtfulness. Little by little these ancestors of mine are coming into better focus, thanks to the kindness of the wonderful folks on this list. It's rather exciting! 3. Dear Lister, I am still looking for information on James Taylor and Jane Cuthbert. How would I go about finding where they maybe buried in the Kirriemuir Cemetery. When I go into Kirriemuir cemetery I just get the 60 famous people - and I don't think they would ever have made that list. Is there a phone number or a office I could visit. I intend to visit in the first week of September from Shepparton Australia Norma Anderson (Taylor)

    3. Norma, You don't give any time frame. But Kirriemuir Cemetery records are now available at http://www.deceasedonline.com I see two Jane Cuthberts and at least one James Taylor Searching is free, but you have to pay to get the record that shows the precise lair and location. Be warned, however, that knowing where they are doesn't mean you will find anything, especially with older graves. I went hunting for a number of graves last year in several cemetaries, and not one was marked. 3. Hello Nick, Not sure if these two DUNCAN brothers are connected to my DUNCAN lines. However, I did have DUNCAN relatives in India. One was Governor of the then Bombay from 1793-1813. There were other family there at the time including a younger brother who died in a shipwreck supposedly in the Calcutta area. Information is sparse on this branch of the family. However, it is possible that younger family members went to India in the period you mention. Do you know from where the two brothers you mention came, please? 3. Ian, Thanks for your message. I think your own Duncans predated mine by many years, and as far as I know mine did not arrive in India until late 19th c. The founders of Duncan Bros were late arrivals too. I think the firm was founded in 1858. I was looking for a Dundee connection but so far had no luck. There must be several ian gammages around the world but I knew one in Vancouver in the mid 70s and thought I would ask if you were him. 3. Dear Norma Have you looked at http://www.deceasedonline.com/ ? All the extant information from the burial records held by Angus Council for its area (that is, the County of Angus less those parts now administered by Dundee City Council) have been made available via Deceased Online, and access to the orginal books is no longer permitted, so even if you ring up the burial grounds office they will just refer you there. 3. Hi Anne Bad news. It looks as if your e-mail address has been hi-jacked by a spammer. You're not the first to be attacked in this way. I'm going to have to unsubscribe you for the moment in case any more of this sort of stuff reaches the List. I'll keep you posted, and in the meantime perhaps you could get your system checked over?
