All the checks i have done have brought up nothing, i am now 100% certain he and his wife came over from Ireland to Dundee at some point, I'm sure he was living in Dundee in 1901 and before as i have the document of their sons wedding in Dundee and he worked in a jute mill. Could anybody help me with good sites to look at to trace back to immagration from Ireland, must admit, getting a bit confused with it all now, any help would be greatly appreciated..................thanks Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I'm trying to find some details of some distant relatives. I've posted this before, but I thought William went to the USA. His sister Margaret went to Boston, with her Husband. Murray Haver Robertson b.1882. I'm looking for details on my Late Granddad's Brother. I've found that William went to Canada & not the USA. According to Mum's sister. William Gray was born in 1886 at Glen Isla in the County of Angus. Married with 2 Daughters. Died of Dyptheria. Blacksmith to Lumberjacks in the Canada..?. His Parents were Francis William Grant Gray. Born 1853 d. 25 Aug 1946 Ruthven Angus Age 93. Jane Barrie Born 15 Apr 1857 Kirriemuir Angus. Died 22 Mar 1922 Slieview Ruthven Angus. Alistair Bell.

There is a reason for this. The rules say that an illegitimate child must be registered in its mother's name. However if the father accompanies the mother to the registrar's office when the birth is first registered, and signs the birth certificate, the child can also be registered in its father's name. So there will be many cases where the entire parish knows perfectly well who the father is, and the child is known by his surname, yet it is only registered in its mother's name because he would not or could not accompany her when she went to register the birth. The father's name cannot be added to the birth certificate at a later date. However the birth may be *indexed* under his surname if either (a) the mother goes to court and gets a paternity order, in which case this will be recorded in the Register of Corrected Entries or (b) the parents, having subsequently married, decide to re-register the birth at a later date, which can be many years after the event. The best place to look for information about illegitimate births around 1835 would be the Kirk Session minutes. These are in the National Archives of Scotland www.nas.gov.uk and have been digitised, but are not available online, so you would need someone who is going to Register House in Edinburgh to look this up on your behalf. There are some other archives in Scotland which have access to the NAS' 'Virtual Volumes' of digitised documents, but I do not have a complete list of these. And many illegitimate children used their father's surname through life, even those born after 1855 who were registered with the mother's surname. I have also found some marriages in my own family lines where the information given at marriage was incorrect. Especially if one of the parties was born illegitimate. In at least one case I am about convinced that the bride made up her father's name. And it's a certainty that her mother never married anyone by that name, although the child's marriage states the parents were married. I have also recently found a marriage where the bride gave her stepfather as her father (and used his surname)and her father's surname is used as her middle name--the name her birth was registered under, as her father did sign the birth registration. Meanwhile, you say you have his mother's death certificate so you should have her parents. Any help we can give you with them? Was she from Kirriemuir? Your generous reply has prompted us in to reviewing the data. We have lots of data on "William Wilkie" from his adolescence onwards, including his memoirs and a fulsome memorial inscription. He only adds Donaldson as his middle name later in life. He cites his father as "Peter Wilkie" and his mother as "Elizabeth Donaldson" on his MI. Our working theory is that he was illegitimate, but took his fathers name. His mother never married and died under her maiden name (we have her death record). We also have found the two census records with the "Andersons" just outside of Kirriemuir. We've always wondered if he was "farmed out" to live with the Andersons because his Mother was fully occupied as a Hand Loom Weaver (very tough with the Power Looms coming in). His father Peter could have been older and died before the first census'. But, even an illegitimate birth should be recorded in the OPR's and we can't find him! Hi Doreen and others. Thanks for the responses I have had to my post and possibly to others that I don't know about. I have recently changed my e-mail account but I think I have "unsubscribed" the wrong way from the old supplier though I am sure that I have "subscribed" with my new address. I have also configured my filters to allow mail from the Angus list but for the last two weeks I have not had any direct mail from Ancestry. I am trying to resolve this, maybe the Administrator can help Anne! Help! Bruce - Even though your Robert Walker would have been too old to serve in WWII, I believe this may be his required draft registration card that he signed in April 27, 1942. The local board was Chicago City No. 27, 6243 S, Ashland Ave. Chicago. Serial No. U2871; Robert Walker; 5960 Lowe Ave., Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois. At the time of registration he was age 47, born in Forfar, Scotland. His birthdate was Aug 22, 1894. He listed Mrs. Lavinia Walker as his next of kin. His employer, as you guessed, was Chicago Surface Lines, 78th & Vincennes. Robert was 5 feet 9 inches, weighed 174 lbs and had a light complexion, black hair and blue eyes. These details should help you in your search. Good luck! Bruce, I am struggling with this. Can you provide any additional information? Do you know Robert's wife name? How about his children, their name, etc.? Were they born in Scotland or the US? If a son visited in Forfar, would anyone know more about him? It might be possible to request some assistance from the staff at the Newberry Library in Chicago. They have a very large research room for family history. http://www.newberry.org/genealogy/collections.html You can view what they have and how to contact them. I will still continue to dig.
