Hi All, I also have very fond memories of Lunan Bay and St Cyrus. I spent many a happy holiday in the 60's in the area as both my parents families were from Arbroath (Carrie, Petrie and Craig). Often saw jelly fish in Lunan Bay and loved the sandy beaches. The sand dunes at St Cyrus were massive in the 60's but on a visit in the early 90's they had all gone, shows what the weather does. We used to picnic at Lunan Bay and swim in the river there but only when the tide was going out so that we got the warm water. We also used to pick rasps for Chivers on the fields above. We also liked to visit the Elephant Rock (Rock of St. Skae) and the lime kiln at the Bodden. That was during WWII when cycling was the only way to get around. We also used to cycle to the beach just below St. Cyrus. I also had a school chum that lived at Tangleha just up the coast from St. Cyrus. I am also descended from Ferryden folk and other families in the Angus and Kincardineshire area. Who knows, we may be related. My family tree is full of Coulls, Perts, and Wests as well as my family name of Milne. My gr-grandmother Jemima Pert was from Usan. My brothers and I, along with a few pals, used to cycle down to Lunan Bay in the summer time and swim in the river there, diving off the large concrete blocks placed across the river to prevent tanks or small boats gaining access to the Lunan area during WW2. We also used to go to the berry picking in the berry fields bordering Lunan Brae, gooseberries on the right hand side and rasps on the left. These were the days, late 40s, early 50s. I wonder if David & Will Nicoll were from my wife's home village of Ferryden. If I remember correctly there was a house and a fisherman's bothy on the links at Lunan. Many thanks Alex. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

David Potter, coachman, born in the parish of Kinnell, Angus about 1815/19, married Jane/Jean Morrison and had a son William Morrison Potter, born in Friockheim (pronounce it like 'freak him' without the 'h') in the parish of Kirkden on 17 November 1836. William married my relative Elspet Brymer on 2 December 1859 in Brechin, and about 1863 they moved to St Cyrus, where they lived out their lives. They had 13 children, at least 3 of whom died in infancy. William's career was varied, to say the least. He was a groom, farm labourer, gardener, salmon fisher, quarrier and teacher of dancing at various times. I have missed that map, it is not used in "Lost Dundee" but is of great assistance in identifying some of the streets described in the early chapters. Yes. what we now know as Dock Street is called "Shore" beside what came to be know as King William IV dock, the later Earl Gray Dock is still tidal. To add to the confusion, "Lost Dundee" says that the waterfront was destroyed by a tidal wave in 15- something-or-other but was reclaimed ... and called "New Shore". Yyonne must now be entirely confused! Cheers, Bruce D
Hello Marilyn Do you have an idea of her husband's first name? Your question is interesting because I do have a Georgina in the family although she was a D'All by birth. I will try to summarize: In the mid 1850s Mary Coleman Dalziel arrived in Dundee from County Cavan with her three children George, Sarah & Alexander. George married twice with no surviving children. The first of his children with Susan are shown as illegitimate - they had 5 boys - John 1866, James 1868, George 1874, Robert 1877 & Alexander 1881 - in addition to Mary 1879. The only marriage records for his sons that I have found are for Robert (Mary Anderson) & Alexander (Jane Malcolm). Sarah of course had no D'All descendants so, on to Alexander: Alexander - the first of the family to my knowledge to be recorded as D'All, married Mary Jane McDowell - they had 3 sons - George 1875, Samuel 1876 & Alexander (my ggrand) 1878. George & his wife Jessie had five daughters, one of whom was the Georgina I mentioned earlier. Samuel and his wife Agnes had sons but they would have been too young to be Georgina's husband. My g-grand Alexander & Bella had 2 sons, again too young to be considered. Going by your Georgina's date of birth it looks to me as if the candidates in my family could be one of George's sons for whom I have not found marriages. There are at the very least seven Alexanders of record, some of course still living; I did not have the death record for Alexander in Seattle however - are you able to tell me where you found it? I have to admit that although I have done extensive research on the family over the years it has been at least 5 years since did any serious looking. Many thanks to Alastair and Colin for your replies. Very much appreciated. Yvonne
Dear Helen: I see your surname and reference to Dalziel, shortened to D'all. Can you tell me more of the D'All/Dalziel family in Dundee? My GG-aunt, Georgina Thompson Powrie married a D'All or Doll. She was b. 1866, Dundee to John Powrie and Jane Haddon Innes. He must not have lived long, as she's found with her father in Dundee by 1901. Ancestry indexed her as Gina P. "Dall." I know she was still using the D'All, Doll/Dall surname in the mid 1910s. I see that George and Susan Robertson Daziel also had a son Alexander, b. ~ 1881; died 8 Feb 1957, Seattle, Kings, WA. Probably named after your Alexander. Hello Judith, A distant connection :) I show a Robert Shanks Ross as being born in 1876 & passing away November 11, 1939 in Dundee and although I have never researched him, it seems likely that he may be the son of your Jane & John. Robert was married to Mary Dalziel, born 1879, died 19 August 1949 in Dundee. Mary was the daughter of George Dalziel & Susan Robertson - George was brother to my gg-grandfather Alexander Dalziel (D'All). There is a monument to Mary & Robert in the Eastern Necropolis that also commemorates the deaths of two infant daughters - Margaret 1907-April 12 1910 & Christina 1908-April 15 1910. The inscription reads from our children, so there were more than the two babies but I have not looked into it. Hi Bruce Shore Terrace is shown on Google Maps, and Google Street View even shows the Street Sign on the corner of the buildings behind the Caird Hall. It runs from Castle Street to Chrichton Street and passes to the North of Tayside House and the adjacent car park. It is shown on my Dundee Street Plan (4th Edition printed in 2005). It is very small and is partly pedestrianized. Colin p.s. I just had a look at the 1821 map of Dundee on the NLS website http://maps.nls.uk/towns/detail.cfm?id=331 and what is now Dock Street, between Trades Lane and Union Street is labeled SHORE. Shore Terrace is not labeled, but a small street is shown in the same place as the modern street. Shore Terrace is not named on modern maps although your location is (was?) correct. The area off Dock Street immediately behind the Caird Hall where, prior to the building of the Tay road bridge, the Corporation bus stances were located was Shore Terrace. Since the bridge approach roads are currently being altered this all may change. Looking at Ordnance Survey maps of the 1850s and 1870s, Shore Terrace was a block of buildings located pretty close to where the Caird Hall now stands. It contained at least two Public Houses and some of it was probably residential. The area was demolished for the construction of the City Square and Caird Hall between 1910 and 1932. On an undated plan of Dundee (around 1830s but no railways shown) the open area is labled "Fish Market". Let us not forget Yeaman's Shore which is shown on a 1793 plan following the old shoreline West of the harbour area behind the houses and gardens of the Nethergate. This street existed at least until the West railway station was demolished. The area was reclaimed during the 19th century for the building of railways puting Yeaman's shore half a mile from the river. It is now swallowed up in West Marketgait and associated car-park. The 1793 plan also shows Shore Walk running north-south roughly in the alignment of present day Crichton Street. The Shore Terrace buildings do not appear on this plan. Have you tried deceasedonline.com. They have records for some of Angus (not Dundee) and an advanced search gives results for free. You have to pay after that. Colin On 11 October 2011 17:49, Bill Banbury <[email protected]> wrote: > Barbara Robertson Black Key
