Author: Forfarian Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/5993.2.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Eureka! Ann Gibson Sinclair, daughter of John Sinclair and Isabella Miller, was born on 7 and baptised on 21 September 1823 in Brechin. John Sinclair and Isabella Miller were married in Brechin on 21 March 1804, and must be the parents of Isabel, born 1805 in Musselburgh (a long way from Brechin in those days!) and John, born 1809 in Brechin. There's a George born in Kirkden in 1836 to James Pilmer and Margaret Sinclair, so there's another daughter. There is a family in the 1841 census that looks very peculiar in the light of the 1851 and 1861: Donald McDonald 25 Labourer Not Angus Margaret McDonald 25 Angus Isabella McDonald 55 Flax spinner Angus Ann McDonald 15 Flax spinner Angus George Pilmer 6 Angus I think this must be Isabella Miller and Ann Sinclair wrongly listed as McDonald. There is no trace of them as Sinclair in FreeBMD Donald McDonald and Margaret Sinclair had two sons: John, born 17 and baptised 27 June 1841 and Charles, born 1 August and baptised 7 August 1842, both in Brechin. As Donald Sr was still living in 1861, there ought to be a death certificate, unless he too emigrated. If there is, it ought to tell you the names of his parents. FamilySearch has just one Donald McDonald born in Rosskeen, 19 December 1809, parents Charles McDonald and Katherine Ross. I note with interest that your Donald named a son Charles and gave Georgina the middle name Ross. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [ANGUS] ROBERTSONs, etc.
    2. I don't see any match, Kaye, but I'll share what I have and see if you (or anyone else) spots something I've missed: Alexander ROBERTSON married Margaret ANGUS in 1808 in Edinburgh. Margaret was the daughter of James Angus and Margaret SMITH. Alexander Robertson and Margaret Angus had the following 4 children: Duncan, b. 1810 in Edinburgh, died 1860 in Kirriemuir. He never married, but fathered a child out of wedlock with Catherine BARCLAY (daughter of David Barclay and Agnes MUIR). The daughter was named Ann Robertson and she married Alexander IRVINE (son of William Irvine and Ann WHYTE) in 1856 in Kirriemuir. They were my great grandparents. Margaret, b. 1812 in Edinburgh. Catherine, b. 1816 in Edinburgh. She married David LIVINGSTONE, a minister, in 1852 in Kirriemuir. David was born 1819 in Dundee to John Livingstone and Lilias BLAIR. They had children John, Margaret and Lilias. Catherine died 1883 in Kirriemuir. James Angus, b. 1819 in Edinburgh. He married Marjory HENRY or Hendry who was from Tannadice. They had 5 children, the first 3 in Tannadice, the last 2 in Kirriemuir. The children were Henry, William, Margaret, Jemima and Isabella. James died 1893 in Kirriemuir. I have another line merging with my IRVINEs. Patrick Irvine married Jane/Jean ROBERTSON probably about 1829-1830. Jane, b. abt 1800 in Old Machar, Aberdeensh., was the daughter of Peter Robertson and Robina SPENCE. I know nothing about her parents, and of course her children were Irvines. She died 1868 in Kirriemuir. Any other ROBERTSONs I've collected would be from extracting Kirriemuir death records, but I don't see any connections with SHEWSTERs or BELLs. Sorry. Irene, in Michigan

Donald's birth certificate shows he was born in Brechin on 8/2/1863. He married in Townsville, Qld, Australia on 1/12/1888. This produced Donald Jr and two sisters, plus a few more distant in time or space. I checked the details and noted that the information was from C11275-1, which contains births extracted from the Scottish civil registers under the indexing project, so the information can be regarded as reliable (unlike anything 'submitted'). FamilySearch doesn't have the original Scottish census. The **only** places where you can see originals of the Scottish census are either online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, or in a family history centre where you can arrange to see it on microfilm. There is a list of FHCs on the FamilySearch web site. Ancestry has transcriptions of the census, but it's always possible that the McDonald/Sinclairs were not all living together as a family. You mentioned that Donald Jr had emigrated at a very young age - when was that exactly? It might be worth asking Angus Archives if the Brechin parochial board records contain anything on this family. http://www.angus.gov.uk/history/archives/ It's also possible that they were summoned to the kirk session to be punished for the sin of being caught in extramarital activity. The recors of the East Kirk session are in the National Archives of Scotland, reference CH2/41, but I do not know whether or not the Cathedral kirk session records survive. I have been unable to find them so far. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Ann Sinclair I haven't had any luck at all with. I will try searching again using your information. If DM Jnr had siblings, I wonder why he left at such a young age for Australia - presumably on his own. In Australia he used Macdonald. Author: Forfarian Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/288.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: A John Bell married an Amelia Guthrie in Dundee in 1767. James Guthrie, 1st of Craigie, and his wife Elizabeth Gardyne had a daughter Amelia, born in 1739. So this might be one of the connections you are looking for, Don. I have not found a Miss Bell marrying one of the Guthries of Craigie so far. Joy, think about the dates. If John Bell was married in 1767 and died in 1797, he must have been born in the 1730s or 1740s, so even if he had not moved to Dundee over half a century before it is highly unlikely that the Rev James Bell was still living, let alone siring children, in Arbroath in 1798/9. Records about this Rev James Bell are conspicuous by their absence. He is not listed in 'Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae' which means he was not a minister of the Church of Scotland. He obviously wasn't Roman Catholic. There is no James Bell in David Bertie's book about the Scottish Episcopal clergy, and this was a century before the Free Church broke away. At that time there were just two small breakaway groups, the Cameronians and the Associated Presbytery. There was a *William* Bell who was Church of Scotland minister of Arbroath from 1748 to 1775, but he doesn't seem to have had any connection to Dundee. Author: Forfarian Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/5993.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (SP) and invest in a few credits. I see from www.familysearch that Donald McDonald and Ann Sinclair had three children in Brechin between 1856 and 1863, and in all three cases the children's surnames are listed in the index as 'McDonald or Sinclair'. This suggests that Donald and Ann were not married. Does Donald Jr's birth certificate confirm this, either by saying 'illegitimate' or by not giving the date and place of the parents' marriage in the normal way? If Donald Sr and Ann were not married, you need to try to find them in the census. Isabella Millar McDonald or Sinclair, born 24 November 1856, and Georgina Ross McDonald or Sinclair, born 21 August 1859, should be in the 1861 census (unless they died in infancy) aged 4 and 1 respectively, and in the 1871, aged 14 and 11 together with Donald, aged 7. Assuming that their parents were living together, this will tell you the their ages and birthplaces. Finding the grandparents may not be easy, unless they married after Donald Jr's birth, in which case the marriage certificate should tell you the full names of both sets of grandparents. There is one such marriage in 1876, but beware of assuming that, just because the names match, this is the same couple. There are two index entries at SP for marriages of Georgina Ross McDonalds. One of these could be your Donald's sister, and if so her marriage certificate should tell you whether her parents were deceased. There are also two listings of marriages of Isabella Mill*r McDonalds. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
