John is not found in the '61 census, it is his 2 sons, Alexander and George, that appear there. On his son George's birth registration in 1855, John's birth place is said to be Aberdeen. He is said to be the informant of his wife, Elizabeth's, death in 1956 at Dundee. That is the last reference of him that I have been able to find. The boys, Alexander and George were entered into the Dundee Poorhouse, after their mother died in 1856, in March of 1857 and removed 6 months later. They appear in the 1861 census as boarders with the Andersons of Crathie and Braemar. John's occupation is listed as Fireman/Ship Stoker. I suspect we are looking at different branches of the family given your dates, although my data is far from proven: David Warden's name was well researched and his dob came from a descendent of one of the brothers that went to Australia and also from a member submission in IGI. Those are always suspect until proven from another source. Isobel Winter's name is also fairly well established and the surname is passed down through the Australian Wardens. However her date and place of birth are tenuous. This is information I was given and have been unable to confirm, although the source has considerable research experience. It's a common name. And I do wonder why she would have been born in Dundee if the were a Kirriemuir family. There's also Winter's in Tannadice, which is much closer. Their chidlren Catherine b 19/10/1809, Elizabeth Black b 29/1/1826, Margret Souter b 4/5/28 bur 13/7/51, Betty b 1821, Helen Donaldson b 20/5/21 m 13/8/36, Mary about 1828, Jane or Jean Anderson b 5/5/30, William 11/8/11, and my great grandfather x 4 John b 8/12/16,m 13/8/36 to Margret Miller. They had five children before she died in 1849 and he had another five with his second wide Bridget Mill/Milne. Anything further would be great. The siblings Catherine and William may be a bit tenuous and need more work, especially as you have them down for seven children. thanks Alan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My great grandfather x 6 is David Winter b 1752 m 20/7/87. I have his wife as Euphame Webster. I did find the David Winter married to Isabelle Smith but have dismissed it. I will try and recollect why. Think the timelines did not work out. I currently have David and Euphame having 4 children. One of them is Isabell b 25/10/1791. I have no definite verification of the date. I am not sure the difference in spelling mattered too in Scotland at this time as it seems to depend on who wrote it down. But as my decendent is Isabell's sibling William Winter that is all I have. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My 3G grandmother was Isobel Winter born 1785, Dundee. She married David Warden of Kirriemuir and they had three children. Two sons, David (1810 Kirrie) and James (1820 Kirrie), went to Australia. The daughter Isobel b. 1814 Kirriemuir married William Stormonth of Tannadice. That is all I have definitively on that generation of Winters. But I have that Isobel b. 1785 is possibly the daughter of David Winter of Kirriemuir. I think his wife was Isobel Smith. Do you think there is a connection and/or can you give me any pointers to confirm (or not) more information? Anything from a fifth to a quarter of baptisms are not recorded, and the further back and further north and west you go, the sparser are the records. This son of Charles McD and Katherine Ross looks interesting, but you must not assume he is the father of your Donald. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I can't believe the number of Isabella's - numerous ones on my Stewart side from Elgin/Moray area as well - makes it very hard when Donald McDonalds begat Donald McDonalds and William Stewarts began Williams Stewarts and Isabella Smith married William Smith and names their daughter Isabella Smith who then marries William Stewart ...... see what I mean? Then to have this family you are finding for me - wow! What a tangled web was woven. Back to work now..... Just started playing with this research and realising the complexity of family trees. James Fender and Isabel Pettrie have just cropped up - married 14/12/1775? It would seem that their daughter Isabella married my great x 4 grandfather William Winter. That's assuming I have the right connections and Isabella was born around 1788.
