Ruth My great grandparents went from Italy to England in the 1800s. They came to the states in 1912.. In their citizenship papers they (my grandfather and gtgrand) renounced allegiance to the King of Italy. My grandfather was English born and raised. Their information at Ellis Island indicates they were from Italy. I find this confusing. Would they have had certificates from Italy when they lived in England? I have met my neighbors after 18 months...they are Siciliano...the mom is directly from there... Sharon Lynn
Hi Sharon, I have no idea of the laws in those times 1800's, but with your family you have three different countries with three different laws. I think that it is possible that if your Grandfather was born in the UK he had a right to be British, but it is possible that in the eyes of the Italian Gov. as his father was italian he also had Italian Nationality. So when they arrived in the states they would then have come under the American laws. In my own personal situation. I was born British but when I got married here in Spain I asked for Spanish Nationality. This was approved but i had to sign a document giving up my British Nationality, but in the eyes of the british Gov. I have dual Nationality. But here in Spain I am only Spanish. Do you get the idea???? i would'nt worry to much about the fact that they had to give up Italian Nationality as I really think it was more of a beurocratic problem rather than anything else.
