It's true that the FreeBMD site is slower, but it's not plagued with the many errors which ancestry.com have introduced into the data base because, it would appear, of their lack of understanding of British geography and administration. Richmond is a classic case, the ancestry site seems unaware that thee's more than one place with this name, and there are plenty more examples.
