Good luck Eunice - it is a minefield out there. I searched for ages for my father Horace Arnold Symonds and quite by chance found he was registered as Horace Symonds Arnold as he was born before his parents married, Arnold being the Anglicised version of my grandmother's maiden name of Arnaboldi. You too may need some lateral thinking. Best of luck. Brian Symonds, Bristol UK
Thanks for that encouragement Bryan! it does not make it easy does it.... I feel that as my grandfather's name is spelled correctly on the birth certs of the 5 children and also on the death certificate of my grandmother, there SHOULD be a correct entry somewhere if there was a marriage at all, I am just pinning my hopes on the 1901 census, although I did manage to get onto it the first day it was on line, put in a query for Albino GIOIA, and it came back with the message, no matches, and then timed me out - but if it ever comes back on line (supposedly in September now?), then I may be able to do a bit more searching - he ought to be in it somewhere, unless at that time he was not in England <sigh> Cheers Eunice >
Eunice, When it does come back I would be very liberal with your choice of spelling.... GIOLA springs to mind immediately, but try every combination. Remember that the index was nearly 80% transcribed on the Indian sub-continent - it is no coincidence that the most popular surname in the index is 'DITTO', closely followed by 'DO' .
