    1. [Anglo-Italian] Italian POW'S in Orkney

    3. Just found this small piece of information about Italian prisoners of war. A large number of Italian soldiers were taken POW during the battles in North Africa. They had been serving in what is now known as Libya. Many of the prisoners were sent to a POW camp for Italians on an island in the Orkney islands just of the northern coast of Scotland. Whilst there they reformed a Nissen hut into a lovely church. It was reformed to a very high standard especially the alter area considering the lack of materials they had at hand. The church has recently been renovated by Italians who came over especially to carry out the work. It is one of the main tourist attractions on the islands. Quiet a number of the POW'S met local girls and married and stayed in the UK after the war. Ruth
