Hi Everyone, My paternal grandmother was descended from Anglo-Italians. Her mother Sylvia Josephine Tortolani nee Ferrari later Micallef was born in Selema, Italy in 1883 she emigrated with her family possibly in 1894. Sylvia’s father was Battista Ferrari and her mother was Adele. Battista died sometime before 1937 as Adele died 31/03/1937 in London. Battista & Adele had three other children, Cesare (Charles), George and Anne. Charles married Chrissie and they had Charlie, Freddie & Chrissie. George married Maude and they had Lesley, Ann, Chrissie, Reginald & Cyril Anne married Cyril Sandiman (Oscar) and they had Reginald, Cyril, Leslie, Iris & Lenard Sylvia Josephine Ferrari married Pasquale Tortolani at St Peters Italian Church in Holborn, London in 1904. Pasquale was born in Casa Del Casino, Italy near Firenze in 1879 he emigrated sometime before 1904 probably alone, with siblings or with a friend. His mother was still in Italy. Pasquale during WW1 joined the Italian Army and was wounded in Gallipoli late Nov/early Dec 1916. He was transported to a hospital in Torino, Italy where when he felt able to he attempted to go to his mother in Cassino per Atina. Prov. Di Caserta, he did not make it becoming very unwell and died in the Ospedale Militare Principale, Reparto infettino Letto 60, Roma. On 07/01/1917. Pasquale’s wife and five young children were left in London, his youngest child born 09/02/1916. Pasquale & Sylvia had 6 children, Nildi (Hilda), Maria Lalia (Lillian Mary), Adele, Maria Sylvia Clarice (Clarice), Carlo George (Charlie) and Ivy Josephine. Hilda married Lenard Clark and they had Susan Lillian married John Clements and they had Clarice, Sylvia, John (my Dad) & Joseph Adele died young. Clarice married Harold King Charlie married Elsie and had Shirley & Sussana Ivy married Ray Park. When Pasquale died Sylvia was left alone with 5 children aged 10 and under. She remarried in 1920/21 to Joseph Micallef from Malta and had a further 2 children, Marie & Joseph. Joseph was killed in WW11. All name places are either verbal or written in letters from that time. I cannot find the towns or villages let alone the communes. Can anyone help me with the places. I also have a lack of understanding as to why Pasquale joined the Italian army and why he was taken to Torino in the first place. If anyone can help me with any of this please feel free to do so. Thanks muchly, Lisa Clements 11 Owen Place, Hamersley 6022 Western Australia
