Hi I am looking for a man called ? Tella who appears to be the father of my husbands Great Grandfather. William Benjamin Baylis was registered as the son of Benjamin and Ellen Baylis nee Johnson on the 19th December 1862 in Liverpool. He was born less than three months after his "parents" marriage on the 29th September 1862 in Birmingham. I have found William on the 1881 census living in London with his "father" and he is using the name on Baylis - however, after this date he uses the name Tella and all of his children are registered as Tella. The story that was handed down states that William was born a Baylis but used his stepfathers name - I feel that what really happened is that Ellen got pregnant by Mr Tella and was "rescued" by William Baylis who made an honest woman of her and then took her away from the scandal up to Liverpool. I know that Birmingham had a large community of Italians (and other nationalities) and feel that perhaps Tella is an Italian name - please correct me if I am wrong. My husband and daughter are very dark and are always being mistaken for mediteraneans in the sumer. Thanks Pam
