My English (Yorkshire) grandfather went out to South America in early 1900s and met my Italian grandmother. They married in Bolivia. She went out there when she was 12, in 1906, her father being a mining engineer who had worked at the mines in Sardinia. Apparently, the La Placa family were originally from Naples, went to Bologna and then Sardinia in 1895. From Sardinia, rumor has it that Enrico La Placa was transferred to the mines of Bolivia (Huanchaca, Pulacayo, San Jose) through a French and/or Belgian mining consortium. They embarked on the ship at La Rochelle in France. If anyone has information on Anglo-British overseas, migration of Italians to the west coast of South America, particularly from the port of La Rochelle (routes, ships, etc), I would be most interested.
