    1. british subjects in italy - STEVENS and TEMPLE?
    2. Alison
    3. I'm trying to confirm whether an Alice G. Stevens - listed in the 1891 UK Census aged 17 and born in Italy - is my gg grandmother who was know as Alice Genevieve Temple, father Noel an actor (although I can't find any records for him) Can anyone help with the surnames STEVENS and TEMPLE in Italy? What might British subjects have been doing in Italy? And what records are available about them? Or might they be anglicised versions of Italian surnames - in which case what would the Italian be? There is a circus/performing link - Alice claims to have been married to a trapeze artist, and was herself a street artist. Family legend also has it that we have a white-faced clown and an Italian Count among our ancestors, but I don't know more than that. Any help gratefully received Alison McKay London

    3. Hi Alison, You wrote: Can anyone help with the surnames STEVENS and TEMPLE in Italy? This is a very unscientific reply, but you never know on the internet! On this Italian surnames site: http://www.gens.labo.net/it/cognomi/genera.html there are 1-5 Stevens' surnames in a number of regions, which you could look up in the Italian phone books, and there are 1-5 Temples in Umbria. Again you could look them up in the phone book. Hope you have good luck.
