I've just had an idea why an Italian may have changed his name on his wedding certificate. My grandfather was Antonio Arturo Davide at birth and he used variations of these names in Italian and English throughout his life. I understand that he had acted as an acolyte in Milan Cathedral (obviously before he was 12 as he then went to Paris to work) and something happened there which turned him off religion. He was married in a Church of England church near Birmingham and this is the only time he used the name John Arthur. He never used John again to my knowledge. Also I wonder if these young men were dodging the Italian military service? Jasmine
That's a very interesting observation. Our ancestor Alfonso Galzini's wedding Certificate cannot be found either though family legend has it that they married at St James' Piccadilly. Cannot find a reference through the bride's maiden name either. We think it might be that they went back to Venice to marry and had a blessing here, but have not checked that. They had a dinner service made for them in their initials from the ceramic factory GIORNO, but the dates are wrong - this mark ios too late for a 1860's wedding. And their name Galzini does not appear anywhere in Venice or Italy .....
