    3. A family friend visited me on Sunday and mentioned that if my great-great-grandfather arrived at the Pool of London he may well have gone to live in the Italian Community around the Clerkenwell area. My family believe that he arrived in this country when he was about 12 years of age (approx 1850) and finally made it to wales by 1861 (he was on the 1861 census). What records are available for the Clerkenwell and Italian communities in London? 1. CUNEO in Sheffield
    2. Lisa Evans
    3. Hi everyone, I am new to this list. I have been trying to find out information on the CUNEO family from Sheffield. The family consists of Andrew CUNEO (1827), Mary (Maria) CUNEO (1834) both born in Italy. There children where John (1863), Andrew (1866), Anthony (1871) and Theresa (1877) all born in Sheffield. They are down as being Ice cream makers, which I am sure will be very interesting if I can find out more info on them. I have the census information for 1871 onwards but nothing for the 1861 so they may have come over sometime between 1861 and 1864 when the CUNEO ice cream company was established. I have no idea how to trace back any further or to find out how/when they came over from Italy. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Lisa (Sheffield)

    1. RAPETTI & MEANI
    2. Just one of my sporadic postings to see if anyone out there can shed any light on one branch of my family tree!  My great grandfather, Luigi Rapetti, supposedly came from Torino but there is no record of his birth at the Torino record office.  I have tried various other record offices in the Piemonte area (also some in Liguria and Lombardia). Nothing.  His date of birth would have been around 1872.  His father, Pompeo was a prison foreman (at least it's stated on Luigi's marriage certificate).  Luigi worked in the UK as a waiter and a watch repairer / watchmaker. Luigi supposedly travelled to Argentina and the US with his brother who stayed there and didn't join Luigi when he came to the UK. Luigi's children (one of whom is my late grandfather) were named : Claudio Felice Andrea Meani Ugo Oreste Mario Louis Ronaldo Celeste I am assuming that Meani is another family surname as I am not familiar with it as a first name.   Would anyone agree with this assumption? As Luigi died when my grandfather and his brothers were very young, there is very little known about him.  My grandfather's mother (not Italian) remarried very quickly and mention of her late Italian husband was forbidden! I have a very old photo of Luigi with some very faint writing on the back (unintelligible to me and maybe not even relevant) - would there be any clues in the setting or format of the photo? I am really at a loss as to my next move.  I have written to many record offices.  I have contacted various Rapettis & Meanis from the telephone books.  I have looked up various people on Ellis Island's website.  I have been on the UK's 1901 census (probably too early for Luigi but I'm not sure of this).  I have been on Family Search, Genealogy.com, and other well known websites. Nothing produces any clues.... Any advice would be very gratefully received. Best wishes Sarah Lucia RAPETTI

    1. Prisoners of war in Italy
    2. Mrs Julie Goucher
    3. I have recently read a book by Howard Reid called Dad's War. The book is the author's personal trip to Italy following in his father's (Ian Reid) footsteps based upon a diary & journal kept by his father during the Second World War. Ian Reid was in a Prisoner of War camp in Italy. He escaped (and was recaptured several times), but was supported and protected by many Italians, during what was a difficult and insecure time. - The book is excellent for descriptive details of rural Italy during this time. Having enjoyed Howard Reid's book I have obtained a copy of his father's original book which was published in 1947. Prisoner at Large by Ian Reid published Futura 1947 ISBN - 0 8600 7360 2 Dad's War by Howard Reid published Bantam Books ISBN - 0 553 81554 7 I have placed both of my copies in the library of the Anglo Italian FHS and they can be borrowed, by reading the Society Library terms and conditions and by sending the borrowing request to me in Devon. If you do not have a copy of the terms & conditions and the borrowing form, please email me and I can email one to you. Regards Julie Goucher --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. In the August 2003 edition of Family Tree Magazine, there was a fascinating article about names that had been transcribed incorrectly in the 1881 Census. B0RDOLI, Benjamin/7/Son/scholar/LEC/LEC 3173/120 B0RDOLI, Elizabeth/5/Dau/scholar/LEC/LEC -id- B0RDOLI, Rebecca/9/Dau/scholar/LEC/LEC -id-/(children of Benjamin BORDOLI, age 49) This entry was located by using a 0 instead of an o. This certainly provides food for thought. Regards Julie Goucher --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). 3. Thanks Rod! I didn't know that site - it is clear that I was right in thinking he was from Genoa! I only mentioned the Mazzei connection because of the marriage certificate and I understood that someone else had been researching Mazzei's in Cardiff, but it is clearly a more problematic name to pursue. 2. Transcriptions
    3. I have just received this e mail from the 1837 webpage. It might be of interest to those that are trying to find British births abroad. 1837online.com is pleased to announce the launch of new overseas birth, marriage and death records on our website. If your ancestors were born overseas, or perhaps died whilst serving in the armed forces during WW2, or were even married abroad whilst resident within British lines during WW1, then you will find these records useful. Some of the records date back as far as 1761 and include regimental birth indexes, whilst others, such as the GRO Deaths Abroad indexes date up to 1994. In total there are over 1 million new records for you to view. You will also be pleased to note that the overseas records have been indexed by full surname rather than the first three letters of a surname, enabling you to search for records more effectively. http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/serviceslisting.asp_strareano=2002_16.js p
