Dear Colin, Thank you for the invitation to the AGM and etc. I am afraid I shall be unable to attend due to a previous engagement. I do hope that the event goes very well. Yours sincerely, Jasmine Belloni
Hi Tina, I tried 'Irish names' on Google and got http://www.ncf.carleton.ca/ I couldn't make out the next symbol but after that bj333/HomePage.boys.html I'm sorry it isn't clearer, I'm nearly as old as my computer!! But, there are more Irish names on that page than I knew existed. Try Google. Good luck, Shirley > > Hello listers, I'm hoping there are some people in the group with knowledge of Irish names. > We have heard from an old aunt in the family about Vinnie Gaffney who went to USA ended up in Sing Sing etc etc. > Asking if anyone can tell me if Vinnie or Viney is the correct Irish first name or if it stood for something else, suggestion is Vinhals. > No luck with obvious Vince or Vincent.
Hello listers, I'm hoping there are some people in the group with knowledge of Irish names. I'm hopeless with Irish first name spelling and how they are pronounced. Keeping my fingers crossed someone can help. Warmest regards Tina Morana

Hello list The Catholic Family History Society is holding its annual Day Conference and Annual General Meeting on Saturday 13 November 2004 commencing at 10.00 in the Church Hall of the Church of Our Lady of Victories, 235a Kensington High Street, London. Entrance to the Church hall is through the archway at the side of 16 Abingdon Road via the back doors at the rear of the courtyard. The meeting is open to non-members so anyone will be very welcome. Programme 10.00 Parish Mass 11.15 What's in print for Catholic family interests, speaker: Michael Gandy 12.30 Lunch 2.00 AGM 3.15 Family history research as a tool for biography by reference to Venerable Mary Potter, speaker: Pam Fontana The meeting costs £7.00. A buffet lunch is available for £8.00. Please contact me if you will be attending. A particularly valuable aspect of the society's work for Anglo-Italian family history is its long-running programme of Catholic church register transcriptions, making available records that otherwise would be difficult, if not impossible, to access. The society has concentrated on registers from before the time of civil registration, particularly baptisms, but some later registers have been transcribed. Most of the work has not been formally published but has been deposited in the appropriate local archives; a complete set is held by the Society of Genealogists and by the Catholic Central Library. G'Day to everyone, while looking for Irish ancestor Vince Gaffney, I stumbled across Vincente Giovani.(1901 census) He was 18 b Italy living in Soho, St Annes, Westminster. Clicked on to "rest of family" Head of the house was Domanes Crotta with his family and 11 other young men from Italy mostly working as waiters. Will list some names however I feel first and surnames have been mixed about. Address was Batesmans Buildings. Zuffo, Tarene, Calsello, Ganee. I do hope this of help to one of our group. Best wishes from a "nippy" west oz. Melbourne Cup on Tues, the race that stops a nation. If it's a wet track your Irish stayer Vinnie Roe will go fave. Stormy weather forecast and the horses don't like that, get skittery. I'm off to the pub for Melb Cup lunch along with the rest of the country. Happy Punting. Cheers Tina Morana
I found this news story while looking for information on the "Arandora Star" tragedy, concerning a call from Italy's politicians for compensation. It is fairly recent, having been posted within the last two weeks. I have no direct ancestors who were on board, however my great grandmother's brother in law, Domenico Di Cocco was killed. http://www.sundaylife.co.uk/news/story.jsp?story=573053
Hello Tina Thanks for the offer of assistance; I'm the one looking for Tyas, not Sarah Lucia. I'm about to go out so cannot reply immediately with my interests, I'll write later off-list as I don't think that there are any Italian links there. Hello Sarah Lucia The County Record Office for Camden is the London Metropolitan Archives. http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/leisure_heritage/libraries_archives_museums_galleries/lma/ What dates are you interested in? If it is for the late 19th/early 20th C, registration had to be with the local police; for London that would be the Metropolitan Police, whose records are held by TNA at Kew. Apparently the Metropolitan Police kept only a sample set of a few hundred registration cards of the many hundreds of thousands, they can be found in class MEPO 35. Normally the cards were destroyed 10 years after the alien was naturalised, died, or left the UK. For more information see Immigrants and Aliens, by Kershaw and Pearsall. Some records were kept by the local Boards of Guardians, those that survive for Greater London are held at London Metropolitan Archives. Kershaw and Pearsall list the following: Poplar, Shoreditch, Marylebone, Wandsworth and Woolwich, not Camden, I'm afraid. Passports The TNO information leaflet on passports states: "Before the First World War it was rare for someone travelling abroad to apply for a passport ... Possession was largely confined to merchants and diplomats, and the vast majority of those travelling overseas had no formal document." For the full text of the leaflet go to the TNA website http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/searchourcollections/ and search for "passport". I hope that helps, Colin Moretti I'm a member of the Anglo-Italian Family History Society http://www.anglo-italianfhs.org.uk Looking for MORETTI, PAGLIANO, BARGMAN, in London TYAS, IVESON, WOOD, ABBOTT in Yorkshire ----- Original Message ----- From: <RAPETTISL@aol.com> To: <ANGLO-ITALIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 25, 2004 7:51 PM Subject: [Anglo-Italian] (no subject) > Can anyone tell me where "aliens registration papers" would be held? Can anyone tell me where "aliens registration papers" would be held? The information I've read says "county record offices". For the (now) London Borough of Camden, where would that be? I also wondered if my Great Grandmother (who had British nationality) would've needed a passport to travel to Italy with her husband in the early 1900s? Any help would be gratefully received (as always!). Best wishes Sarah Lucia RAPETTI researching RAPETTI and MEANI
Hi Tina Thanks again for all the details.Things are now becomming a bit clearer.Thought that Lucia,(Who married Paulo VELARDO) was the daughter of Andrea & Nanzensca CAPOCCI.,but is appears that her surname is D"AGOSTINO.This makes sense, as Nanzensca CAPOCCI (My gr grandmother) maiden name was D"AGOSTINO. They all lived at Simms Alley in the early part of the 1900,s. With regards to Lucia age at time of her marriage,it appears that it was fairly common in our family to marry off the daughters at a very young age,so, Lucia,s could well be correct in the 1901 census. The most interesting note, ? is her age in 1901, (19) and born in Bristol. Which would mean the family arrived here prior to 1884 which is the earlist date I have (So far !!). Can also begin to see the Spanish connection. As mentioned before,my gr grandparents(Andrea & Nanzesca CAPOCCI) ,married in Spain sometime around 1880,and their first born ,Lucia ( b1883 )was born in Spain. Still trying to find out, how one is able to research Spanish records ?.Will also now have to start searching the Swansea ,Wales, records for children of those mentioned above. Thanks again for your help. Hi Tina Many thanks for the details.Have just checked my family list and found Dominico VELARDO,son of Paulo and mother Lucia VELARDO nee Capocci. Lucia was my grandfathers elder sister (By 10 years). So any other information would be most usefull. Family lore had told me that they lived in Wales, but as of today, could not prove as fact. Will have to research, and find if Dominico married and had any children. Dominico, mother Lucia, was born in Spain of Italian parents. Our search now will mainly center on finding Lucia,s birth place in Spain ,which may also lead us to where her parents married ,also, in Spain, circa 1875 to 1883.
