    3. Althought it is not Derbyshire, I have come across the following www.picturesheffield.com click on photographs select P then scroll down to Prisoners of War and there are three photos. There is no indication if these are Italian or German POWs, but this might provide a clue for futher research. -- Regards, Julie Goucher anglers.rest@virgin.net www.anglers-rest.net www.C-J.org.uk ORLANDO One Name Study ~ GOONS Member 3925 www.orlando-ons.co.uk -- No virus found in this outgoing message. There has been a sudden influx on emails to both personal addresses, list addresses and the admin address asking that links in the email are clicked on for a variety of reasons, I have had 6 tonight. In the case of safety, I would urge list members to refrain from clicking on any links, especially in the case of banking, paypal and ebay, and unknown sites. Can I please remind listers that Rootsweb does not allow attachments, and mail containing them will have them stripped. It is essential that list members keep their anti virus upto date and keep a heathly PC. 3. Christine > Do you know if there were census' in Italy in 1881 the same as England. Are > there any kept records that are searchable via the net? Unfortunately I am not aware of any online census indexes for the whole of Italy, nor any other database. There may have been individual parish censuses (Status animarum) - with luck, possibly microfilmed by the LDS. The parish that I have researched has them in 1856, 1864, 1879, 1880, 1890,1895 (in the province of Parma in the region of Emilia Romagna). People are grouped in households. Although fairly close, the province of Genova in the region of Liguria may well have quite different records and will have many parishes. To research in Italy you generally need to first know which parish your ancestor was from. The types of records available could include parish church records and civil records. Conscription and military records may help in your case and you may be successful without knowing the parish if the state archives can find Walter FERRINIEA (but you will need the right spelling). It looks as if they hold Fogli matricolari - Liste di Leva (1884 - 1923) in the archives in Genova. http://wwwdb.archivi.beniculturali.it/UCBAWEB/indice.html and choose Genova. http://elenco.libero.it/elencotel/public/RicercaOmonimie.jsp may help you find a suitable spelling for the surname, assuming it still exists in Italy. It will also show you its distribution across Italy. Other list members may have knowledge to share about their use of military records or specific details of Genovese records. Our Anglo-Italian Family History Society website http://www.rootsweb.com/~ukaifhg/ provides some starting points for you to read about what is available, including a bibliography. I've found Trafford Cole's book to be a particularly good reference to the types of records available and well worth buying. Daphne Dashfield (Geradine) GHIRARDANI, => GERADINE, etc. - many spelling variations in London from approx 1844 TASSI, SCRIMAGLIA, NICOLI, (DI) or (O)STACCHINI in London GHIRARDANI, LOVATI, SILVA, MAC(C)INI, BOTTI Parma esp 18th century in Varsi

    3. That's a very interesting observation. Our ancestor Alfonso Galzini's wedding Certificate cannot be found either though family legend has it that they married at St James' Piccadilly. Cannot find a reference through the bride's maiden name either. We think it might be that they went back to Venice to marry and had a blessing here, but have not checked that. They had a dinner service made for them in their initials from the ceramic factory GIORNO, but the dates are wrong - this mark ios too late for a 1860's wedding. And their name Galzini does not appear anywhere in Venice or Italy ..... 1. ITALIAN POWs
    2. Michael spencer
    3. Hi all, I am trying to locate, though I feel it is going to be a difficult task, and maybe to late ,an Italian POW who worked the farms round central Derbyshire. All I know is his name was Michael a young lad in his late teens or early twenties. When my mother was a young girl of nine, the Italian POWs caught the bus/truck which transported them to camp,( I no not where) from outside her house in the hamlet of Snitterton. Michael made for my mother and her sisters little wooden boxes. I am named after Michael. I know it is a long shot, but feel I have to give it a go. I need to find the names of POWs called Michael, housed in Derbyshire who worked the farms near Snitterton. If there are any records giving names and the place in Italy they came from it would be a major obstacle overcome. Even if the POW is no longer living I would still like to contact any family he may have had. I have tried before, not with much enthusiasm I might add, but I am determined to give it my best attempt this time round. Any help anyone can give would be truly appreciated. Mike

    3. Hi again Christine, in 1891 census I found Richard Ferrenice b Italy 1870 (census looks more age 27 to me but then it has the usual black line through it) he was a stationary engine driver (as Walter was) boarding at 162 Liverpool Road, Barton upon Irwell Lancs. Most of the people were employed as ship canal labourers. I'm guessing it was on the Manchester Ship Canal somewhere around Eccles. No doubt our other members will know more. Can't find any trace of Richard later. The name of the family he was lodging with is unreadable. It's a puzzle isn't it why they would both have such English first names. Chat again soon, Tina -------Original Message------- From: Christine Charles Date: 01/29/05 04:54:14 To: ANGLO-ITALIAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Anglo-Italian] Anglo Italian FHS Thankyou Tina but I do have all that information. 3. Hi Christine, some great news. I looked in Ches BMD for marriage using soundex on surname and found the following:- 1898(no date) Walter FERRENICE to Harriet Ackerley St Lawrence's Frodsham, Cheshire Central district ref 125/3/400. A copy of the marr. cert could reveal where he was born and was living at the time etc. I will go and have a squizz for Harriet and get back to you asap. Cheers Tina -------Original Message------- From: Christine Charles Date: 01/29/05 03:40:04 To: ANGLO-ITALIAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Anglo-Italian] Anglo Italian FHS Hi That is my family BUT where they are before 1901 is a total mystery Christine ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tina Pearce" <tina_ed.downunder@bigpond.com> To: <ANGLO-ITALIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 28, 2005 10:44 AM Subject: Re: [Anglo-Italian] Anglo Italian FHS > Hi Christine from Tina in WA, 1901 census has Walter FERRINICA b 1870 Italy > Brit. subject, Engine driver, 7 Moreton Terrace Frodsham with wife Harriet > aged 26 b Ellesmere Port Cheshire.
