Hello Mike, Apologies in the delay in replying, I had started a reply, but saved the response and realised that I hadn't sent it. - I am not sure that I can offer any particular suggestions, but here are a few thoughts of mine that might come in handy. Have you looked at the following URL? It gives the location and camp numbers of all POW camps in the UK. It might be worth looking through and pin pointing the camps in Derbyshire then approaching the Derbyshire records office and the local studies libraries of the main libraries in the area. http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/Filestore/conserving/characterisation/military_history/Prisoner_of_War_Camps.PDF Also the local history societies that are near the camps may have some photos and other bits of memorabilia, and you just may strike it lucky. I would also contact any museums in the area. How about making contact with the local Italian community - perhaps through enquiring at a deli or Italian run business, or an Italian teacher at local schools/colleges. Also, and this is even more of a long shot than the rest! - Contact the local Universities, and see if anyone has done a research project or dissertation this subject. My advice, as someone who is researching my modern Italian ancestry, leave not stone unturned, even if it all looks very hopeless. Good luck and let me know how you get on. -- Regards, Julie Goucher anglers.rest@virgin.net www.anglers-rest.net www.C-J.org.uk ORLANDO One Name Study ~ GOONS Member 3925 www.orlando-ons.co.uk -- No virus found in this outgoing message. The Co-operative had a large electric arc lamp on the top of their establishment. At Cleator Gate Mr. AINSWORTH provided a triumphal arch, decorated with flags, greens, bunting &c. The Market Halls were also tastefully decorated by Messrs. LINDOW's workmen. A procession of children was formed, in charge of Mr. J. CAFFREY, and proceeded to the Market-square, when the National Anthem was sung under the direction of Mr. J. B. SENIOR. After proceeding through the town to Cleator village, each school branched off to their own place, and altogether about 3,000 children had tea. The old folks were also regaled with a capital knife and fork tea in the Market Hall. During the evening pic-nic was held, music being supplied by St. Joseph's band, Frizington. About 3,000 persons attended a ball in the Market Hall, the M. C.'s being Messrs. J. MENHENNET and P. BURN. Mr. CIAPPESSONI was chairman of the committee, and Mr. GAYTHWAITE the hon. sec. The public buildings were brilliantly illuminated at night, and a great bonfire on Dent was lighted by Mr. J. K. BOUCH on behalf of Mr. LINDOW; and Mr. CIAPPESSONI lit another on the Slag Bank. Everything passed off satisfactorily and an enjoyable day was spent. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. 3. Note from Admin: I forwarded the original post as Alison's email bounced. I am therefore forwarding Caroline's reply as this came to me! The correct address for posting to the list is Anglo-italian-L@rootsweb.com Hi, I was slightly thrown by this one as I didn't recognise the Hatton Wall address. Having checked the map I see that it does mean St. Peters Italian Church in Clerkenwell Road. This church was opened in 1863 and according to their guide book was originally the "Church of All Nations". It attracted congregations of many nationalities throughout the 1860s and had a Polish chapel in the crypt. Apparently people of many faiths came because of the excellence of the music. Presumably in 1878 it will have been quite a trendy place to get married even if you weren't Italian. I see the the loggia on Clerkenwell Road was not completed till 1891, this might explain the use of the Hatton Wall address Hope this is some use, Caroline Enfissi. -----Original Message----- From: Mrs Julie Goucher [mailto:anglers.rest@virgin.net] Sent: 26 January 2005 18:23 To: ANGLO-ITALIAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Fw: Italian Church Holborn Forwarded! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Niall & Alison Taylor" <windyridge@beeb.net> To: <ANGLO-ITALIAN-L-request@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 26, 2005 5:31 PM Subject: Italian Church Holborn Hello I'm new to the list and was wondering if anyone can help me. 3. The Cumberland Pacquet, Thursday, January 9th, 1902 - Grand Catholic Performance Grand Catholic Performance at Workington A performance of the well known and once popular comic opera, H. M. S. "Pinafore," was given by the Workington Catholic children in the Jubilee Hall, Workington, on Friday evening. There was a crowded and demonstrative audience. The staging of the piece was excellent and the appropriate dresses worn by all principal characters and subordinates were greatly admired. The rendering of the music reflected great credit on Mr. John SMITH, Pow Street, the talented music director of the Threatre Royal orchestra, who had devoted himself unsparingly to the tuition of the students. Father FISHWICK was the acting manager and organiser of the performance, and who also took in hand the onerous work of instructing the performers. In June 2002 the Vauxhall History & Hertiage Group had a plaque unveiled to recognise the history, heritage and culture of Liverpool's Little Italy. Sadly this plaque was stolen in February 2004 and despite efforts it has not been recovered or returned. Thanks to a very kind and very generous gesture from Kay Kelly a replacement Little Italy plaque will be unveiled on Wednesday 16th February 2005 at 10am. The plaque will be sited on the former Pontack Pub in Christian Street, Liverpool 3. I would be grateful for any help you can give in making people aware of this. We will have notification about the unveiling on the homepage of the Scottie Press website www.scottiepress.org as soon as possible.
