    3. Hello Lisa You'll need to weigh up the reliability of each piece of information you have about locations since I think you may have conflicting information. Is it likely that Pasquale's mother was still living where her son was born? > Pasquale was born in Casa Del Casino, Italy near Firenze in 1879 he > emigrated sometime before 1904 probably alone, with siblings > or with a friend. Casa del Casino could mean "the house at Casino" - what's the context of this pice of information? Could it be a mis-spelling for Cassino? > He was transported to a > hospital in Torino, Italy where when he felt able to he > attempted to go to his mother in Cassino per Atina. Prov. Di > Caserta, he did not make it becoming very unwell and died in > the Ospedale Militare Principale, Reparto infettino Letto > 60, Roma. Cassino per Atina could mean Cassino at/to/by/for/through Atina. Perhaps an Italian speaker can clarify this meaning? There are places called Cassino and Atina in Frosinone, Lazio. Check their location on Virgilio mappe (localita). http://mappe.virgilio.it/mappe/index.html You can also see Caserta is close to Frosinone. He may have needed to travel near Rome on his journey from Torino. Firenze is a long way away from Atina so you may have to consider other factors such as Pasquale's occupation and where his friends came from to confirm whether it is Cassino or Casino you are looking for. (There seem to be 2 Casinos in Firenze). He may also have moved north for work before leaving Italy for England. > I also > have a lack of understanding as to why Pasquale joined the > Italian army and why he was taken to Torino in the first > place. If Pasquale was born in Italy he would have been called up for Italian military service even although he lived in Britain. I understand Italians and their descendants remain Italian until they relinquish their nationality by naturalisation - even if they have lived for several generations in Britain. Fortunately Italy was on the same side in WW1 - in WW2 Italians were treated as enemy aliens in Britain. If you apply for Pasquale's military record you will probably have a definitive birthplace and other interesting information. I think this has been discussed before on this list and you may find it in the list archives (I haven't done this but have a book by Trafford Cole "Italian genealogical records" that outlines their availability and contents). Atina and Cassino are both mentioned in "The Italian Factor: the Italian Community in Great Britain" by Terri Colpi. I suggest you read it for background info about migration patterns that may help you confirm where Pasquale really came from. By the way, Ferrari of Soho is also mentioned in the book, as a firm that was established in 1901, having grown from the occupation of arrotini (knife grinders) into selling cutlery. 3. 17th May 2002 Dear Linda, Yours is effectively the same inquiry as I have been following up in the last week. I think you would get the information you need from the Catholic Central Library, Lancing Street, London NW1 1ND, www.catholic-library.org.uk e-mail [email protected] Actually, I am going there this morning to look up the register of the Sicilian Chapel, mentioned on this mailing list some time ago, which has entries going back to 1729. The old chapel was demolished, and its successor was a church in Holborn Kingsway which I actually visited about ten days ago, but I cannot remember whether its modern name was St Peters, or whether that was a neighbour. However, I believe that the Central Library hold transcripts of almost all the London Registers, and some have been published in earlier issues of the Catholic Record. Sincerely, Adrian Bivar [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Gale" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, May 16, 2002 2:04 PM Subject: [Anglo-Italian] St Peters Holborn > Hi Everyone > > Please can you help me? 3. Hi Everyone, My paternal grandmother was descended from Anglo-Italians. Her mother Sylvia Josephine Tortolani nee Ferrari later Micallef was born in Selema, Italy in 1883 she emigrated with her family possibly in 1894. Sylvia’s father was Battista Ferrari and her mother was Adele. Battista died sometime before 1937 as Adele died 31/03/1937 in London. Battista & Adele had three other children, Cesare (Charles), George and Anne. Charles married Chrissie and they had Charlie, Freddie & Chrissie. George married Maude and they had Lesley, Ann, Chrissie, Reginald & Cyril Anne married Cyril Sandiman (Oscar) and they had Reginald, Cyril, Leslie, Iris & Lenard Sylvia Josephine Ferrari married Pasquale Tortolani at St Peters Italian Church in Holborn, London in 1904. Pasquale was born in Casa Del Casino, Italy near Firenze in 1879 he emigrated sometime before 1904 probably alone, with siblings or with a friend. His mother was still in Italy. Pasquale during WW1 joined the Italian Army and was wounded in Gallipoli late Nov/early Dec 1916. He was transported to a hospital in Torino, Italy where when he felt able to he attempted to go to his mother in Cassino per Atina. Prov. Di Caserta, he did not make it becoming very unwell and died in the Ospedale Militare Principale, Reparto infettino Letto 60, Roma. On 07/01/1917. Pasquale’s wife and five young children were left in London, his youngest child born 09/02/1916. Pasquale & Sylvia had 6 children, Nildi (Hilda), Maria Lalia (Lillian Mary), Adele, Maria Sylvia Clarice (Clarice), Carlo George (Charlie) and Ivy Josephine. Hilda married Lenard Clark and they had Susan Lillian married John Clements and they had Clarice, Sylvia, John (my Dad) & Joseph Adele died young. She remarried in 1920/21 to Joseph Micallef from Malta and had a further 2 children, Marie & Joseph. Joseph was killed in WW11. All name places are either verbal or written in letters from that time. I cannot find the towns or villages let alone the communes. Can anyone help me with the places. I also have a lack of understanding as to why Pasquale joined the Italian army and why he was taken to Torino in the first place. If anyone can help me with any of this please feel free to do so. 1. [Anglo-Italian] CASTAGNOLA family in England
    2. Roger & Merilyn Pedrick
    3. Dear List I am new to the list, and would like to request information from anyone who can help me track down the ancestors of my husbands' great grandfather Felix Secundo Maria CASTAGNOLA, born about 1830 in Genoa. He was apparently the youngest of four brothers who went to fight with Garibaldi, but he was considered too young and sent home to his family. He eventually met and married Mary Ann Kent Dowdeswell in Genoa. Their first two children Sofia and Alberto were born in Italy, in about 1876 and 1878, and the others Emma Louise born about 1880, Daisy born 2 Aug 1884, Celia and Florence were all born in England. Felix died in Basildon, Essex in about 1922. His father may have been Giuseppe Castagnola, because I found a list of people on the internet who had fought with Garibaldi and there was a Domenico whose father was Giuseppe. If the family story is correct, then this would probably have been a brother and father of Felix, whose name may well have been anglecised from a more Italian sounding one like Felice or something. Any help would be joyously received!! Merilyn Pedrick Mylor, South Australia
