I've now received half the fiches for 1871 Liverpool Islington District and - needless to say - I haven't yet found my elusive Ferrie/Ferri family. Let's hope that they are in the 2nd batch when they arrive. Here are some persons of Italian birth found in the census. I'll be posting these to the Anglo-Italian Database of course. The handwriting is truly terrible on this census, so I've had to go for phonetic or 'nearest fit' wherever possible - some of these are bound to be wrong, but if they sound like the names could be close to someone you are interested in, let me know and I'll take another look. Asterisks mean that the letters are beyond transcription. To save space, I haven't entered families if not born in Italy - again, if these are 'yours' I will fill in the gaps if requested: 17 Hood St, Lorenzo ?Gobbi, 48, Hotel (worker), born Italy 17 Hood St, John B Ve*, 39, Cabinet Maker, born Italy 17 Hood St, John Gotti, 23, No Occupation, Italy 17 Hood St, Satanzia Radaelli, 45, No Occupation, Italy 6 Bryth* St (near Theatre Royal), Michelo Amorosa, 28, *onist, Pal* Sicily 43 B*port St, Fredrico Preto, 33, Occupation Indecipherable, Milan Italy 40/42 Lord Nelson Street, George E Maralsissa, 53, Passenger, Italy (this would appear to be a lodging house with passengers awaiting a ship) 6 White Mill St, Dominco Zanetta, 34, Picture Frame Maker, Italy 6 White Mill St, Antony Mitheli, 54, Figure Maker, Italy 7 Lionel St, Luis Borusy, 40, Musician, Parma, Italy 9 Lionel St, Luigi Bripalase, 48, Ice Cream Maker , Genoa, Italy 9 Lionel St, Luigi Gannini, 32, Licenced Hawker, Genoa, Italy 9 Lionel St, Castor Sasso, 31, Musician, Genoa, Italy 9 Lionel St, Nicolo Gallaio, 20, Musician, Naples, Italy 6 Lionel St, John Granall, 36, Model Moulder, Parma, Italy 12 Lionel St, Louis Backagallapi, 32, Musician, Genoa, Italy 52 Hunter St, Ignatio Gulasse, 44, Shipping Agent, Italy More to follow. Our family are currently researching the name De Paolo/Di Pavolo - there appear to be various spellings of this name on birth and marriage certificates. The first reference of the family in England are when Casimirro De Paolo married Elizabetta Lemarro (father's name Francesco a general labourer) in Holborn on 26 July 1889. Their children (Michael, Dominico, Louis and Dominca) were all registered in the Deptford area of London, but before this we can find no trace of them. We believe they originated from the Naples area or San Pietro, Frosione District Near Cassino. Casimirro was an Ice cream seller at the time of his marriage and his father Clement De Paolo was a bootmaker. It was said Casimirro was a seaman but cannot prove this. Many thanks for your assistance. Lisa

He doesn't appear on any passenger > list indexes and he didn't leave a will! You may need to bear in mind that his surname may be mis-spelt or even his first name used as a surname in the census. If you haven't already got them, you could obtain the birth certificates for his daughters. You may be lucky and find him at one of the addresses in 1891. I did something similar with my mis-spelt gg grandfather. Daphne Dashfield (GERADINE) GHIRARDANI + 16 spelling variations, London from c. 1851

Hi Listers I am researching my gr-grandfather, Amilcare Domenico Andrea PERUTELLI. He was born abt. 1853/54 in the Carrara area. He was a master mason in marble (statuary) and immigrated to England in the early 1880's. He lived around the Chelsea/Kensington area of London. My problem is that I can't pin down his exact place or date of birth. I can't find him on the 1881 or 1891 censuses although I know he was here in 1891 as he had three daughters around this time. He doesn't appear on any passenger list indexes and he didn't leave a will! Does anyone have any ideas on how I could research possible places of work in the Chelsea area where he may have continued his trade in the 1880's and 1890's? I have written to Massa-Carrara for birth and military records with no luck so far. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks Jane
First have a look in www.familysearch.org for records for that area.Look up your nearest Family history centre and then you can request to see the microfilm for the years you are interested in and copy the birth, death, and marriage records from the microfilm. For Catherine I don't know if this is going to be of the slightest use, but knowing genealogists and their hunt for the elusive branches... we have a letter up on our website written by Emma Bertie in 1824. I know it is not relating to Italy, but if you read the letter, then the followup on the next page it may give you some information that is of use to you. http://www.home.gil.com.au/~ears/ashford.html Hope this helps Eunice in Queensland At 10:29 21/05/02 -0400, you wrote: >To All: > >I am interested in information on English families that traveled or lived in >Italy during the late 16th century. Hi listers! Would someone be searching/have information on Domenico BRUCCIANI living in London at the mid-19th C? My interest is indirect as one of my ancestors (Lorenzo GIUNTINI) worked for him and I hope it may help tracing Lorenzo back to Italy. Thanks and good day, Raymond (France)
To All: I am interested in information on English families that traveled or lived in Italy during the late 16th century. I am especially interested in the Martin/Brandon family and the Berties. Thank you. Catherine Correll
Hello to everyone on the mailing list. We (Anglo-Italian Family History Soc.) are preparing a database with all the Anglo-Italian information we can gather together. It can be birth, death, marriages dates, dates they arrived in UK, Census records or any other type of record pertaining to Anglo-Italian records If you are interested in having your own information add to our database please send it to Ruth [email protected] our transcriptions co-ordinator. The information sent will be used to cross reference with any further information we collect. This will mean that we can possibly help you find new information for your own family research. When sending the data please confirm if you wish your e-mailing address to be added. Best wishes Ruth Transcriptions co-ordinator Anglo-Italian Family History Society
I have birth cert for Sarah Fanny Moscati who appears in 1881 census as Elizabeth...so who knows who gave information and what enumerators or registrars wrote down. I checked all Births at Family records centre over more than 10 years and found no birth for an Elizabeth. So keep an open mind and record both names in your records till confusion lifted -if ever! Can anyone make any suggestions on the following?? My family name is QUOROLL, anglicised from Italian mid 1800's. My great grandfather married Elizabeth Sloan. She is my grandfathers mother, he was born in 1901, and she is mother on his baptism certifiacte. On the 1901 census, my great grandfather is listed as living with "Fanny" Quoroll, her age being the same as Elizabeth's would be. Are these the same lady? My great great grandfather married Mary Quairolla (both italian immigrants, I dont know what her name was originally). FreeBMD has just popped up with another record, a death record for a Catherine QUOROLL, in 1895 age 49. That would make her the exact same age as Mary, are these the same lady? I'm a bit confused... Thanks Stephanie
