    1. Re: [Anglo-Italian] Certificates
    2. Ruth My great grandparents went from Italy to England in the 1800s. They came to the states in 1912.. In their citizenship papers they (my grandfather and gtgrand) renounced allegiance to the King of Italy. My grandfather was English born and raised. Their information at Ellis Island indicates they were from Italy. I find this confusing. Would they have had certificates from Italy when they lived in England? I have met my neighbors after 18 months...they are Siciliano...the mom is directly from there... Sharon Lynn

    3. The Ufficio di stato, is an extract that you can request for individuals over 18. This paper tells you if they are single or married and if they are married whom to, it also includes the name of their parents. I have copied out the originals from the Como council archives, and on the back was the address of all the houses they lived in whilst in Como and the year they left and where to if it is in Italy. These extracts can re requested from the council offices you normally have to pay a small fee and you must write in Italian. You must have an idea of the year of birth and know the name and Surname of the person you want to know about. Jean if you need a translation of the papers scan a copy through to me at [email protected] . The other `paper is a Cetificate of Nationality, I have not seen one myself, but it could be either to prove his Italian background or notifying the Italian Gov. about receiving British nationality. I have a copy of a 'Certificato Di Nazionalita', for Jean. It is stamped by the Italian Console In London, and typed in Italian, dated 1918. It also has a photo of Jean in the corner. I also have a copy of a 'Declaration of Acquisition of British Nationality' for her - stating that being the wife of Abramo to whom a certificate of naturalistion was granted (I also have a copy of this) hereby declare that I desire to acquire British Nationality, dated 1936. Why would Jean, being British (parents also British), have to apply for British Nationality? They had a large family and had not returned to Italy. Any info welcome. 3. When I sent the list of Italians found in Clerkenwell/Holborn, I omitted to tell you that where I said "name found in...." I meant I had personally found these names in my ancient Italian book - Melzi's dictionary of people and places, which also lists Garibaldi's "Thousand" Marshals and their birth places. In other words the bits I put in brackets were my own suggestions as found in this book. Can anyone help me find a baptism of Giuseppe MENCARINI circa 1817-1822 (he lied about his age!), son of Domenico, a farmer. Possibly in the San Salvatore/Monte Carlo region of the province of Florence, Tuscany. Near Pescia/Montecatini Terme. Am collecting all sightings of this uncommon Italian name in Tuscany. 3. Just to let everyone know - the European Vital Records are on a CD rom from the LDS just like the British Vital records. They have different disks for different parts of Europe. Italy has 1 disk (Spain has 6) so you can see the wide variation in the data collected. There are large parts of Italy which have no information on the disk so it's very hit and miss on what you get. >From what I have seen there is more info from the north than the south. They only have birth/baptism records and marriage records - nothing on deaths. Some records are better than others with some giving the grandfathers of bride and groom as well as the parents. If anyone is thinking of buying it but wants to know how many records there are with a particular name let me know and I'll check. It's definitely only a fraction of info the LDS has microfilmed because there are no records from the villages my family came from and yet I have looked through about a dozen rolls of microfilm of b/m/d records at the LDS from these villages. The info from the microfilm is not on the website either so if you know (or suspect) the village/area your family are from go to the LDS site and then go to the library catalogue and put in the village and it will come up with a list of films they have available and which your local LDS can borrow. Most of the records I have seen seem to be between 1810 and 1865 but if you have an unusual family name you'll probably be interested in any people with that name even if you can't fit them into your family at the moment. Although the records are in Italian it is fairly easy to pick up the format of the information and then it's easy to flip through the records looking for the surname and then copying down the details only from the records you want. NB the format changed 3 or 4 times over that timespan. Carla (Scotland)

    2. Elizabeth Parker
    3. Please could somebody look for the following: John Domenecko Volente (could be a variant of Valente) b. Milan (or surrounding area) around 1785-ish This is the earliest way I have seen his name spelled in England (it later bacame John Dominico). I don't know if John is his real name or what he was known as in England, we're going to look into getting some research done at the PRO. I know nothing about his parents. "Family legend" (!!) states that the son of an Italian Count in Milan fled to England to escape his father!! So far the Milan bit has been proved to be true, but we know nothing about when he came to England or if his father was really "a bit of a one"! Ta muchly, Liz. 1. [Anglo-Italian] CHRISTALDI / CRISTALDI & What do the intials CEP on a headstone mean
    2. Ciao, I have 2 reasons for this post. 1. I'm doing the genealogy thing. My father's mother was a Margaret CHRISTALDI (ba1910). She had sisters Henrietta(m.Robert TRIMBLE), Virginia(m.Samuel/Minnie ?), Madeline and Irene. Their parents came from Italy before 1910 and lived in the Italian Market area of Philadelphia, PA. Does anyone have any connection or info on this family? 2. Some of us on another list are wondering what the intials CEP stand for on a headtone. An examle is as follows (I'm not related). We are guessing that it is Italian. Ursula SARRACIONO Nacio 1873 Murio 1945 CEP Some are guessing a religious sect...some are guessing a form of the phrase Rest in Peace. (RIP) Any suggestions? Take care, Ella

    2. Dear All I recently received a request which was recommended to our group by the Italian Embassy. We are receiving recognition as last! It is a very complicated story and I will write exactly what I received : It is from Lance Skinner of Leicestershire who explained : I was a child orphan refugee brought over to the UK after WWII where, subsequently as the result of an accident I suffered severe amnesia. Now, as memories slowly return, I am trying to better understand my early childhood. I have a recollection of a family of French origin in Europe (circa 1945) : MASSA (maison Regnier) I would be very pleased it you could help me find the names of the wives and children of : Alexandre-Aldred-Andre Regnier, marquis de Massa (born 1905) Ernest-Francois-Philippe Regnier, comte de Massa (born 1910) during/at the end of the war. It appears that the male line of the family is listed as extinct in the latest copy of the Almanach de Gotha. [He enclosed a copy which stated the Massa de Carrara is a province in Tuscany] If you are unable to assist me I would be very pleased if you could put me in touch with any organization, except private genealogical societies, anywhere; who might be able to help Debretts/Burkes and the International Red Cross are all unable to assist. If anyone has any ideas please contact Lance Skinner, 32 Rosemary Cres, Whitwick, Coalville, Leicestershire, LE67 5GT Regards Sarah Lucia RAPETTI

    3. Alison, I looked in the Italian Vital Records for CAPORALETTI and found only one - could they be Jacama's parents? CAPORALETTI, Sabatino Age: 27 Marriage Wife: Anna GUALA Age: 17 Marriage Date: 3 May 1856 Recorded in: Morro d'Oro, Teramo, Italy Collection: Civile Husband's Father: Luigi Husband's Mother: Anna Nicola DI DIODORO Wife's Father: Giuseppe Wife's Mother: Luisa MORETTI Source: FHL Film 1177229 Dates: 1853 - 1856 It might be worthwhile seeing if the LDS have the birth records for Ancona available on microfilm - that's how I found a lot of my SALVETA family. I checked the 1880 US, 1881 UK and 1881 Canada census but the name didn't turn up in any of them. Sorry I couldn't be more help. We'll certainly keep these and add them to other transcriptions submitted by other listers and our transcription team so we can look them up for future enquirers. 1. [Anglo-Italian] Book which gives some info on Italians coming to Britain.
    2. Carla Salveta
    3. If you are interested in cookery and genealogy you might like a new cookbook called “Dear Francesca A Cookbook with Love” by Mary Contini (it’s on special offer at my local Borders bookshop). It is written by the daughter if Italian immigrants to her own daughter and mixes in family recipes with information on what their life was like back in the Italian villages they came from (around Picinisco in Frosinone province) and how they came to Scotland (Edinburgh). There is also a family tree at the front and scattered throughout are family pictures. Mary’s aunt married into my family which is why I was interested as it had pictures of my aunt when she was a child but I was very interested and moved by the details in the first couple of chapters of what life was like for those first immigrants. I am interested in SALVETA (anywhere) and PELOSI from Picinisco and then Manchester (1880's onwards) so if any turn up your families please get in touch. I also have many of the CD’s from the LDS – 1881 UK Census, 1880 US Census, 1881 Canadian Census, UK Vital Records (new edition) and European Vital Records which does have some Italian and French information. If you want a lookup in any of these let me know – as long as you understand it may take me some time to do them. Carla Salveta (Scotland)
