My father was a POW in Bedfordshire in the Woburn, Ampthill area. He also worked on a farm with a number of other Italiens. They were very good workers and were allowed out into the community. Alot went out with local girls and subsequently married them after the war, my father included. He continued to work on the land after returning to England and later trained as a psychiatric nurse, his English was so good that he also helped out as a court translator. So some good things came out of the war. Hi all, I'm so sorry if I haven't answered you're look up request yet, the requests are numerous. Plus, life has been a little hectic to say the least, and, we're leaving on a vacation for a few days. We'll be back by the weekend. then I have to work, so it may be even longer before I can get back to you. I promise to do my very best to find the person/s that you're looking for. I have done that for everyone so far, and that is also why it has taken me quite some time to get to everyone. Many people did not have much info for me to go by or had a few states and or names for me to look into and I've had to dig deep to find those that some were looking for. I hope to get back to you with your info very soon. Please do not respond to this email!! I am not excepting any new requests till after next Monday. I need a chance to catch up with what I have to this point and that may take a while. Thank you for understanding, Ella
The only thing I can suggest is that you try and get hold of the Como Birth records at your nearest Family history center and working on his age check through them. I have been able to get quiet a lot of Family records this way. I have no FHC any where near to where I live and had to ask the help of somewone to check out the names. Unfortunatly becuase I could'nt do the search myself I am missing quiet a few but did'nt feel it was right to ask her to check any more.`i have found records for deaths outside of Como town (other villages) but it could be that they were sent to Como becuase the family originated from the town. I also found the people at the archives extremely helpful and they even gave me plans of the houses that the family lived in whilst in Como. Keep at it I,m sure something will come up. Hi Laurita I don't know if this will help or not. I have been trying for several months to get birth details of my gr-grandfather. The only information I had was that he came from Carrara in Tuscany. I didn't know whether it meant the comune of Carrara or the province of Massa Carrara and I didn't have a definite year of birth, only his name. After several letters to the State Archives, I finally decided to write (in Italian) to ALL of the 17 comunes in Massa Carrara. Last weekend I finally got a copy of his birth certificate and he turned out to have been born on the comune of Carrara after all! Why don't you write to all the comunes in the Como area, giving name and approximate year of birth? Hope you have some luck soon, Jane Laurita BLOOMER wrote: > Hi Ruth > Thank you for your reply. Hi Anne, He was the very last entry that I came to before they chucked me out at closing time, and I was particularly interested because I was specifically looking for a stabbing incident in that year! The only other details given in the Coroner's list was that he had '[something unreadable] punctured stab in left side with knife penetrating heart. Wiful {murder?} again. Giaconio's alias was 'Invipo'. I will be going back to this film at some point so will try to despher it more carefully. This is all the detail given unfortunately, but there may be a surviving coroner's inquest. I shall certainly look out for it while on the trail of the other stabbing (I gather it was a very common way of settling scores in the community!). I also hope to check the local newspaper records for that year if I ever get to Colindale, so will keep my eyes open for Antonio's grizzly end! Hi Ruth Thank you for your reply. The only info we have on either family is that they both came from Como. Now whether that refers to the town or the province is anyone's guess. The person we spoke to at the state archives was extremely helpful and brought us all the records for the years around when we knew my grandfather was born but to no avail. Not an Alutto recorded anywhere. We have been able to trace the family since 1900 but it would be nice to find out whether my grandfather had any siblings etc. as we know little about his history prior to his marriage in 1902 in England. Hi laurita, My Grandfather also came from Como. I visited Como last Summer. I was able to get information from the council archives, but you do need to have a birth date after about 1870. Hi Diane I've been reading your messages to the list and I wwas interested to see how similar your 'Errotta' name was to 'Crotta'? which is my uncle's surname. He came from Naples so perhaps this is another variation to consider?? Happy hunting Anne -----Original Message----- From: Diane Webb [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 08 July 2002 16:46 To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [Anglo-Italian] Re: ANGLO-ITALIAN-D Digest V02 #131 Hello Ruth, many thanks for your kind message of 'keep the faith'. Also to Felicia, I tried the databases, just in case some part of my family went the South American way. No luck for my ERROTTI+ variants, however, there were plenty of Perrotti's. Maybe I should search out that name for a while! I did this in the past without results but with new material coming to the fore I just may find a connection. I have a question regarding the online publication circulated through the http://www.italians-world.org/Italy/BancaDatiGb.htm Idon't read Italian, but it does appear to have an Index - I think, probably accessed through a subscription???? What are the chances of sks on this List checking the journal out for UK/Italian connections. The journal is called "Altreitalie" and is advertised as, "Internation journal of studies on the peoples of Italian origin in the world". Perhaps our Anglo-Italian List could benefit in some way. I have just started trying to trace my family tree and would be interested to hear from anyone who has any knowledge of either the Alutto or the Moriggia families prior to 1900. I know that my ggrandfather Moriggia was in England in 1874 but have no idea when he left Italy. My grandfather Alutto arrived in England somewhere between 1881 and 1902. A visit to the state archives in Como, Italy did not produce any information. As I am new to this game any help would be appreciated Laurita
Thanks alot Felicia, I have already tried this web page and even wrote to over 30 Desio in Argentina mainly I am looking for Eduardo Desio and his family, but as I mentioned I am really up against a brickwall according to the council archives in Como he and his father left for Genova in 1894 leaving Giuseppe my Grandfather behind at collage to become a Priest, but he ran away and his Father disowned him. I am sure I will find the family some day. Since reading about a local prisoner of war I have become very interested in the experiences of Italian POWs. Bruno Cornazzani tried to save the British pilots of a plane which crashed on the farm in Suffolk where he was working. There is a plaque in the local church commemorating this event. I would be very interested to hear about the experiences of Italian POWs (or, of course, their guards or anyone else who met them), either on this site, or, if you prefer it to be in confidence, to my own E-mail. Paul.
Thanks Anne, I'll reply further to you privately. G'day Ruth I don't mind helping BUT I have not found anything on that family search site, so don't use it, and don't know what the entries would be like or what would be needed, so if someone likes to give me an idea of what the entry would be and how would I know it was an Italian family in the UK, I could probably do this once a week or so, and I am familar with Word so that bit would not be a problem. Do you have a list of names to be looked up or something? I have only the one name Albino GIOIA and there is very little out on the web for that name. All the best Eunice
