    3. I can't be there, but do have a great time in getting to know one another. Cheers, Diane -----Original Message----- From: Elaine Collins [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, July 13, 2002 2:06 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [Anglo-Italian] Meeting up on Procession Sunday If anyone from the list is going to be at the Italian procession in London on Sunday 21 July, perhaps they'd like to meet up for a drink? We thought of meeting at 5pm, provisionally at the Gunmakers Arms, a tiny historic pub in Eyre Street Hill, EC1. However, I'm waiting for confirmation that they will actually be open that day and would welcome suggestions for other venues. It's obviously fine just to turn up on the day, but if you think you will be there it would be great if you could email me to get an idea about numbers. Hope to see some of you there. 3. I'm looking for any Banchini connections. I have researched the family back to 1801 and a Guspay (Gaspero) Banchini, and all were in Stepney, London. From 2 sites looking at modern names in phone books it seems that most of the Banchini's in Italy come from Tuscany and in particular around Florence. I don't know how reliable that is to say that that is where the name comes from. Any information on Banchinis would be welcome. Janette Bright

The majority of people have 4 sets of grandparents so that means instead of having one special week on the television we would get four. If you could send your 4 messages, subject GGP, approx 40 words, and please include either a UK telephone number or postal address as well as your e-mail addy then they will go on screen in the order that you send them. As you all know they will then be placed on this Mailing List minus the telephone numbers and postal address. This gives you the advantage of not only reaching those with access to the internet but also those who have no computer, and they just may be your missing link. If for some reason you have more than 4 sets of great grandparents, do let me know and I will relax the normal rule of one message, per person, per week. Now sitting back hoping to get lots and lots of messages. Please feel free to pass this message around. 1. [Anglo-Italian] Italian names in Corsica
    2. colin.moretti
    3. Hello listers Have you ever thought that your Italian ancesters might have come from Corsica? Although Corsica is a French Departement today, and French is the main language, it was not always so. In the C11 the island was ruled by the Pisans, followed in the late C13 by the Genoese who dominated the island until the mid C18 when the French took over, apart from 2 years from 1794 when it was part of the British Empire. As a consequence the island has a very strong italian influence. Although most islanders now have French surnames some have Italian ones, particularly in isolated areas. This was brought home to me rather forcefully some years ago when on holiday on the island. By chance I visited a small chapel in a little hillside village (Lumio) not far from Calvi and, passing through the graveyard, was astonished to find that a very large proportion of the monuments bore my surname, Moretti. Even the main village square, I later discovered, was Place Charles Moretti! As I had never met anyone outside my immediate family with the same surname before it came as a great shock. I wasn't researching my surname then so did not pursue the matter with the locals, particularly as my French is not much better than my Italian. Because of the mountainous nature of the island, until comparatively recently most communities were very isolated and some are still not accessible by road today. Consequently small communities have a small group of surnames with very little overlap from one to the next. All other village cemetaries I visited during that holiday had no observable Morettis at all but often other limited groups of 2 or 3 italian names. If you would like to explore the possibility of finding your Italian name in Corsica or in mainland France visit the French web site http://www.cartedefrance.tm.fr/index.htm where you can explore the frequency of occurence of any surname in France. Who knows, it might even give someone the lead they are seeking. 3. I know no Italian (shame!, and its embarrasing when in Italy with this surname) so I must put this question to the list: Can anyone tell me the derivation of Italian surnames, particularly mine? Did they originate in the same way as British ones, ie relating to eg, parent's name or location or some personal attribute? I've always wanted to know. Many thanks Colin Moretti (we've been in London since before 1834) Researching Moretti, particularly, and Whatmough, Philo and Hall, all in London

    1. [Anglo-Italian] Alien Registers & Denizations
    2. Diane Webb
    3. Hello Listers, Whilst on a recent trip to the PRO in Kew I had a look at some registers and indexes for above. Before I left Canada I had ordered the HO5 numbers I thought I would need for my own research: EROTTI and variants. A very kind friend, previously met over the London List and had visited in person on another trip to London, accompanied me to help guide me around at the PRO. Imagine my excitement, after the mandatory orientation tour and gleefully picking up all and sundry leaflets etc., when I finally sat down with my first box of goodies pre-ordered. Dismay quickly shadowed my countenance! The first book I had ordered was for 1856, first quarter. It was a good ten inches thick. Seemingly, ship's Captains had to create a separate list for 'alien' passengers. It was obvious with some entries, that the 'aliens' had written their own names. So many were indecipherable. Now, as Martha would say, this would be a good thing, but no, not here! Most strokes of the pen seemed to form the same letter or groups of a few letters. In other instances, the Captain had created the list, but with questionable deciphering of how the person said their name. I next attempted to search the Country of Origin column. This didn't work too well either. Italy was not united at this time, as it is now (or is it!!) and some entries simply noted 'Italy' and others the names of the cities or towns, i.e., Naples, Pisa etc., All in all, I found it difficult. It would take me a month of Sunday's to go through the years 1856 - 1859, years of my particular interest. I gave it up and decided to go for something that may produce quicker results. The Indexes themselves. These are on open shelves in one of the reading rooms. But, the indexes list only those 'aliens' who had applied for Nationalization or Denization (I didn't even take the time to discern the differences between the two - perhaps someone will enlighten me?) I did, however, armed with a little list of request from Listers, look for names. Below are my results. I'm terribly sorry if the information is incomplete, not your name of interest or leaves you further frustrated. Ciphering out Italian names would be a great project for the AIFHS provided one knows what they were doing better than I. My apologies for being so long winded, here goes with the info: Good luck!
