    1. [Anglo-Italian] PRO LOOKUP - PRETTY PLEASE!!!!
    2. If anyone is going to the PRO within the next few months, could I please beg a lookup in the HO series Naturalisation Records? I am (endlessly!) looking for a reference for Dominick Ferrie (probably started out as Dominicio Ferri). As far as I can establish, he came to England around 1865. However, I've now managed to establish that the only census he is listed as 'naturalised' in is the 1901 - he was then living in Liverpool. I assume that he applied for naturalisaton between 1891 and 1901, therefore, although of course this could just be a shot in the dark. I'd be ever so grateful. TIA A Williams [email protected]

    1. [Anglo-Italian] Naturalisation Papers
    2. As far as I know, the ONLY way to obtain Naturalisation Papers is to check the index in the PRO (Ref HO), and then obtain copies using the references given (if the name does indeed appear in the index). This isn't as easy as it sounds - I was purely lucky because someone was looking for their own names, and kindly came up with a 'possibility' for mine. However, visiting the PRO in London is completely out for some of us (I not only work full-time but am also a carer for a disabled husband, and am disabled myself) and the Professional Researchers I've made enquiries to seem to charge an arm and a leg to look through the index, so I'm still saving up for that!. I do wish they'd get them on-line, there can't be that many proportionate to the massive project of the census & wills (on the other hand, looking at the 1901 census, perhaps not.....!). 3. Hi Elaine We left the procession area earlier than 5 pm after all on Sunday. Stood from 3 pm outside Terronis for good view of the event, then walked round Warner St to see the stalls etc and have an icea cream. Then my husband wanted to go to Verulam St to see a building he had worked on years ago - and we finished up away from the area. Did you go? For those who did not go, it was a good time, several floats with religious tableaux, first communicants in their white dresses, Italian societies from all over UK - Manchester, Birmingham, Croydon and so on. various other Italian societies represented and two bands - both Irish! I am only 5 ft tall but I felt like a giant amongst so many little old Italian ladies, small and round. The men were not much taller. Got a chance to see inside St Peter's Italian church, it was so beautiful. Also obtained a book in Italian but with English translation about the history of the church. No names I recognised but it gave me a few ideas to follow up - my Giuseppe MENCARINI who settled in Baldwin's Gardens for a while in the 1850s, may have attended St Brigid's RC church in the same street because St Peter's was not built. St Brigid's church was demolished years ago. Also gives other RC churches in the area which might have been used until the Italian church was up and running. The book is very interesting, if anyone wants info from it let me know. Perhaps Elaine picked up a copy too? St Peter's was the largest RC church in UK when it was built, until Westminster RC Cathedral was built a few years later. From the outside it does not look big but it is huge inside, supposed to seat 2000. Incidentally the crypt could hold 200 bodies. I only know about the Clerkenwell area because of a cousin I found of Italian descent who lives in England. He told me that his grandfather or great grandfather went to England from Senerchia, Italy and settled there. I truly am not sure of the time period for Federico Cozzi arriving in England. Yes, Mazzone/i is Italian.... very much so. A few days ago I was in a book store and ran across a book called "London." It was a rather thick book and I quickly located Clerkenwell in the index and read about it. From about the 1860's onward, it was a heavily Italian settled area. I do know that my great grandfather Federico Papa went to the U.S. in 1882. I'm not sure when others from the Senerchia area began leaving Italy, but anyone who lived in Senerchia very well may be related to me. Or at least, quite a few of them. It was a small mountain village of only about 3,000 and probably relatively poor. My great grandmother was Rosaria Cozzi. I believe they married in Italy, as he came to the U.S. with his oldest son, who was still fairly young. Rosaria didn't appear in the U.S. until 1887 with the other children who were born in Italy. None of their children were born in England. I do have others who did have children born in London, and then who traveled to the U.S. Denise Wells List-Owner, IRL-Cavan-L Editor, The Irish Everywhere Newsletter - subscribe by sending email to [email protected] Cos. I have no idea if there was / is a big Italian community in Nottingham. All the ones I have traced married people with English surnames. On moving they anglicised the name from Dominico to Dominic(k), as did the son who went to Scotland. 3. Hi Lee Interesting that your BIANCHIs came from Lucca too and settled in Nottingham for a while, just like my ancestors. Don't know if there is any connection for you with the following but give it to you for what it's worth. I had correspondence with a lady called Maureen researching BIANCHI, in 1985 and 1991. Giovanni BIANCHI died in Norwich and his wife Sarah (nee RIVETT), one dau and two sons (one of whom Maureen's ancestor, Giovanni Jnr) plus his wife and two ch, all moved to Bethnal Green, London. Maureen says her ancestor worked in a yarn factory until work became scarce. The family seems to have travelled to London from Norwich by boat. Sarah BIANCHI died in Hope St Bethnal Green 1875, 3 yrs after the family came to Loneon. Other children were Maria Anna (B.1841, d.1844) and Mary Ann b.1845 - who stayed in Norwich. There was also an Alessandro Bianchi died aged 1 in 1838 at Vine St, Saffron Hill, London - a boarding house. He had been born in Gt. Yarmouth. Researcher also found a Francisco Bianchi in the Lambeth area, a plaster figure maker. She did find record of a Giovanni Bianchi arriving by boat in London 1835 but had no proof it was her ancestor. Maureen read a book "Italian Stuccoists in Europe" by Geoffrey Beard. She wrote to the author who said there are records of Bianchis in the parish church of Campione, a village oppisite Lugano. Mary Ann B. marr Robert Hewitt and a son was named William Bianchi Hewitt. Sarah B. had a brother living in Stepney so family may have moved to London to be nearer him. Maureen says the Alessandro who died age 1 was born Gt Yarmouth but d. Saffron Hill - however two subsequent children born Gt Yarmouth and another in Norwich - so family moved about a lot. She says there was an old BIANCHI family from 1795 in Ipswich (Gaetano, an optician and music seller from Lombardy). She found his denization at Kew but none for her ancestor though 1871 census says he was naturalised by then. Maureen visited Campione and the 11C church, found several Bianchis in graveyard. Local priest could not help without proper dates. She also visited Milan where there were a couple of Bianchi tombstones. Maureen says her ancestor Giovanni Jnr was born in a pub at Gt Yarmouth - the St John's Head. Keep this message, it may be useful at a later date, you never know. 3. A few names extracted from the 1901 census, all residing in Eyre Street Hill. Some of the spellings are guesswork: partly mine trying to decipher the enumerator's handwriting; party the enumerator's trying to transliterate what they heard. If anyone has suggestions of what these names should be we'll make the suggestions in our master database. Where I can't even make a guess I've added a /, where I'm unsure i've put in question marks. It only took me about 20 minutes to note all these from the microfiche, so would urge anyone looking at any such records to make a note of any stray Italians they find and share them with the list. 3. A slight change of plan: unfortunately, the Gunmakers' Arms will not be open on Sunday. As I'm not sure what else would be a suitable venue (many places in Clerkenwell are closed on a Sunday) can I suggest we meet up at 5.15 pm outside Toronni's (a deli just along from the St Peter's italian Church in Clerkenwell Road) and take a view on where to adjourn to. If anyone has any ideas, please speak up! See you Sunday Elaine -- Have you joined? Membership details and other information about tracing your Italian ancestors available from the ANGLO ITALIAN FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY http://rootsweb.com/~aifhg/

    3. Thanks Fiona, Hadn't thought of Blenco(e), White, yes because of the translation, not quite as common as Smith :-} , it seems strange that other Bianchi's elsewhere in the Uk kept the name, unless my lot went back to Italy or perhaps it was just Nottingham that was bad for Italians, Thanks Again Lee ----- Original Message ----- From: "Fiona Hedges" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, July 17, 2002 7:01 PM Subject: Re: [Anglo-Italian] Fw: MENCARINI ancestors > Lee, I'm just guessing blind here but what about > Blenco(e) - common in Oxfordshire - or White? > Fiona in Oxford > > > ==== ANGLO-ITALIAN Mailing List ==== > List Admin Message > http://www.dreamwater.net/genealogy/AdminMessage.htm > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 >
