I have just received the application papers for the naturalisation of this man Stefano Andrea GIOVA of CARDIFF in 1899 - his name was anglicised to Stephen John . I was just hopeful that it might possibly have been a mis-print for my GIOIA, but it cannot be, so if this rings a bell with anyone on the list just e-mail me and I will give you the details. He was born in Italy and his parents are listed as Gerolimo and Catterina GIOVO of the Kingdom of Italy It also states that he is married to a British citizen but it does not give her name. On one of the pages it is entered as John Stephen, and on another Stephen John, so it is all a bit muddled. He was a seaman and a rigger onshore. Cheers Eunice in Queensland

This makes me wonder if more of my Italian surnames are in Manchester. Can you check those directories for the following surnames? Cozzi, Mazzone, Mazzoni, Onesto, Cataldo, Garippo? Those are the ones that are the closest in my lines. Thank you so very kindly. Your information has been wonderful. Hi Denise, Welcome to the Anglo Italian Mailing List. The Society was formed in May 2002, and became established out of the demand from members of this list. Since then we have more than 70 members, from all across the world. The list is completely separate from the Society, although you will see postings regarding Society matters on the list, such as the one about the latest Newsletter. There are 2 types of membership 1. email where all Society material is sent via email which is £5.00 per year and you will rec all copies of Newsletters for the year 2 postal, where all Society material is sent via the usual post which is £10.00 per year and you rec all copies of the newsletters for the year. Membership is renewable in May. Because of the bank charges for converting currency into stirling we only accept stirling. Perhaps your bank could provide you with a stirling cheque, for £5.00? The Society URL is still under construction http://www.rootsweb.com/~ukaifhg/index.html The Mailing list is http://www.dreamwater.net/anglersrest/Italian.htm and there is a membership form for downloading at both of the web pages. I hope that helps and if you still have problems with the currency contact me off list. To quote from Tracing your Ancestors at the PRO by Amanda Bevan (6th edition): Rregistration of aliens was tightened up in 1914 and again in 19919. aliens had to register with the local police. Surviving registration cards for the London metropolitan area are in MEPO 35 [series held at the PRO] but only about 1000 cases survive from the tens of thousands created since 1914. The cards are informative: you can find them by searching on the name in MEP 36 on PROCAT {the PRO's online catalogue]. Some (but no all) police registration records have survived locally - for example, B edfordshire record office holds 25,000 record cards, from 1919 until the 1980s for similaer locally held collection, check Kershaw and Pearsall, Immigrants and Aliens, Appendix 2.' Hi everyone, I'm fairly new to the list,so forgive me if this subject has already been mentioned : I was watching a programme last year on people tracing their family history. One of them was of Italian descent, and the researcher found lots of info on her family, due to the fact that they weren't naturalised British subjects when WW1 started.Apparently, all aliens had to report to the police, who took all their details, where born etc. The programme researcher showed the ledger to this young lady, with all her relatives' details, which she probably would never had found in Italy. Hope this may be helpful to somebody Cheers, Kath Researching MUCCACHIODI and BACIGALUPO in ANCOATS,Manchester _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com
