    1. Re: [Anglo-Italian] records and 1901 census
    2. Eunice, When it does come back I would be very liberal with your choice of spelling.... GIOLA springs to mind immediately, but try every combination. Remember that the index was nearly 80% transcribed on the Indian sub-continent - it is no coincidence that the most popular surname in the index is 'DITTO', closely followed by 'DO' . Kevin, Biggin-on-the-Bump, Kent, England. ----- Original Message ----- From: "E & R Shanahan" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, August 15, 2002 1:22 AM Subject: [Anglo-Italian] records and 1901 census > > Thanks for that encouragement Bryan! it does not make it easy does it.... > I feel that as my grandfather's name is spelled correctly on the birth > certs of the 5 children and also on the death certificate of my > grandmother, there SHOULD be a correct entry somewhere if there was a > marriage at all, I am just pinning my hopes on the 1901 census, although I > did manage to get onto it the first day it was on line, put in a query for > Albino GIOIA, and it came back with the message, no matches, and then > timed me out - but if it ever comes back on line (supposedly in September > now?), then I may be able to do a bit more searching - he ought to be in > it somewhere, unless at that time he was not in England <sigh> > > Cheers > Eunice > > > > > ==== ANGLO-ITALIAN Mailing List ==== > Anglo Italian Family History Society > http://www.rootsweb.com/~ukaifhg/index.html > Still under construction! > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 >

    3. Thanks for that encouragement Bryan! it does not make it easy does it.... I feel that as my grandfather's name is spelled correctly on the birth certs of the 5 children and also on the death certificate of my grandmother, there SHOULD be a correct entry somewhere if there was a marriage at all, I am just pinning my hopes on the 1901 census, although I did manage to get onto it the first day it was on line, put in a query for Albino GIOIA, and it came back with the message, no matches, and then timed me out - but if it ever comes back on line (supposedly in September now?), then I may be able to do a bit more searching - he ought to be in it somewhere, unless at that time he was not in England <sigh> Cheers Eunice >

    1. Re: [Anglo-Italian] records and 1901 census
    2. Dear Eunice I am having a similar problem with my Gt Grandparents. I have a copy of their marriage certificate in 1907 Newark, Notts. but have been unable to find out where in Italy they came from. There appear to be no naturalisation records, the record of marrriage does not appear to have been forwarded to their home village/town, they are not on a voters register (that was a long shot), the alien register for 1914 has been lost/destroyed. All attempts to find them via boards have come up with nothing. I have written and phoned many people in different countries with the same surname to no avail. So I believe they were Martians!! In all seriously I am hoping the 1901 may have a clue, if they were in this country at the time. Good luck Simone Searching for Francesco Vermiglio(Veremiglio/Vermillio) and Antonia/Antionetta Fiorese.

    2. Good luck Eunice - it is a minefield out there. I searched for ages for my father Horace Arnold Symonds and quite by chance found he was registered as Horace Symonds Arnold as he was born before his parents married, Arnold being the Anglicised version of my grandmother's maiden name of Arnaboldi. You too may need some lateral thinking. Best of luck. Brian Symonds, Bristol UK

    3. Dear Brian Thanks for that helpful e-mail, I will come back to you on this, as I am really stuck with it, - this is my problem Brian, I can find no record of a marriage - otherwise I would be laughing ! and feel that maybe there was no marriage at all, although I find that unlikely in our family. But with an Italian name like that I am just wondering if he may have been a catholic, but even so, it should still have been transferred to the St Catherine's records (now the GRO), as this is well after the 1837 timeframe. Somewhere along the line I must get some information I am sure. Cheers for now Eunice

    3. I have just come across the following web page http://www.angelfire.com/de/BobSanders/81Intro.html SHIPS IN UK PORTS 1881 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCTION -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The 1881 Census contains details of many ships in UK ports. These records are useful for tracing seamen and passengers coming into or going out of the country. For those who do not have easy access to the 1881 census the following pages give the details of the people concerned. It may help someone. Most British ports are included on the list. Ruth

    3. Not on holiday, but if you are anything like me, you are in the 'slough of despond' trying to trace the birth of my grandfather, blind alley, brick wall, dead end, you name it I have been there - so until I can find something positive about this elusive bloke I have nothing to post. But if anyone knows of a contact for a Catholic church around the Hammersmith, Shepherds Bush area of London that would have been there round about 1908-1925 where they could check for a marriage between Albino Flavio GIOIA and Florence Mary TAPLIN, this would be a tremendous help... But I won't hold my breath... Cheers Eunice in Queensland At 17:16 11/08/02 EDT, you wrote: >I don't seem to have had any postings through from Anglo-Italian for a few >days. 2. Eunice, I hope you receive some helpful guidance specific to your needs, but you may also consider writing to the Catholic Family History Society whose researcher (referred to me by Chairman Mr Michael Gandy), was very helpful to me. She researched a number of records at £5 per hour and pointed out to me that because of the Hardwicke Marriage Act, many Catholic Marriages were only recorded in the C of E churches before its repeal in 1837. If you want some paid research, please write to me off line and I would be happy to telephone the lady for permission to release her details to you. Happy hunting! Brian Symonds, Bristol, UK AIFHS no 10 - researching ARNABOLDI in London, Jamaica and Lombardy. Bye for now.
