I just tried the 1901 census on-line and was able to find my Italian family in London. Thanks so much for the "heads up" about the site!! Mary
I managed to get into the list, but there is no results for any GIOIA search I tried mutter mutter mutter... but at least it is back on line however, it also gave me NO RESULT for my grandmother, and I know she is on there, as I have bought the Reading Census fiches and have found the family there, so how can we trust this search engine on the PRO?? Hi Eunica, Funnily enough I tried for your gioia also, I think that it is only part of the records at the moment while they are testing, becuase my Machiavello family are also on there as someone checked it out at gro, not only did their surname not come up but the part of Cardiff i wanted also did not appear. I think we will have to wait a little longer for them to finish testing. Still someone might be lucky. Hi Richard, I am afraid that unless you go to Family history centre and request the microfilm and check yourself there is no way I can confirm that the information about the Carri from 1573 is correct. I only copied it off the www.familysearch.com normally they are pretty correct with their information. Hi - hope you received my last message. I have now cured the computer problem I referred to and have searched all Tacchi for occupations from the London and Bedford categories. The following may be of interest from UK C1881:- Dwelling 16 Goswell Road Census Place St. Botolph, Aldersgate, London, Middlesex Source FHL Film 1341081 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 0373 Folio 72 Page 12 George Tacchi Head Married 61 birthplace = Bedford Occpn Carver and gilder with 2 men. Ellen Tacchi wife M 39 " = Cheshunt, Hertford Percy George son 5 " = London, Middlesex Clifford John son 9 mos = ditto Fanny PAGE 18 = Wroughton, Cheshire - domestic servant. I have known previous examples of people baptised Percy who later, changed their names to Peter. However, that is not guaranteed in this case. When C2001 is eventually available, this may clarify this point. Best wishes, Brian AIFHS no 10 PS If you go to http://freebmd.rootsweb.com you will find 55records for Tacchi spread from 1838-1901, one of which is :- Percy George Tacchi - born Q3 1875 London C 1c 16. Thus, if you feel it is the best lead so far, you can obtain the birth cert from which you will find the maiden name of Ellen Tacchi and discover her birth record around 1841/2. You can then search for her marriage record, which is yet to be on freebmd under the name of George Tacchi. He would have been born around 1919/20, so it may be worth checking RC records for baptisms in Bedford around those years. Anyway, I hope this has some relevance to your needs. Best wishes. Brian.
From: "Katherine Lart" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Subject: Antonio Melchiorre Fabris Date: 25 August 2002 22:33 My g.g.grandfather Antonio Fabris was born in Venice about 1798. He was granted naturalisation in England in 1847. In his application he said that he was a native of Venice, was a merchant in the city of London and had lived in England contiuously since 1823. He had 9 children, at least one (Henry) emigrated to Australia, and another (Charles) to America. On some documents he is described as a banker, on others as a silk merchant. I have a copy of a rather suspect pedigree which gives his parents as ? Fabris, and Salletti Bal.... (a fold in the original has prevented the rest of her name from being photocopied). The couple had 10 children, 7 died of smallpox, 2 daughters survived, Adele who married Baron Tozi and Lettitia who married a marquis. How can I trace Antonio's birth and parents in Venice? Are there shipping records from Venice to England? Would there be a record of his arrival in England? How can I trace Charles in America? Are there any other descendants of Antonio Fabris and Sarah Edgell out there?

I am searching for the above family of gilders and marble masons. As often seems to be the case I cannot find much about Peter Tacchi who appears to have ? immigrated from Italy in the 1800's.
Hi, your message does not say where your Peter emigrated to or where from. Also you do not say what you have already found and its source. However, with a view to being helpful, the UK Census 1881 shows 20 or so of the exact spelling, the eldest being Elizabeth Tacchi born in the UK in 1812, born in Huntingdon and living in Bedford at the time of the 1881 Census. The rest were living mainly in Bedford and the others in London (11). None had the first name Peter, but there was a Percy. How sure are you of the name? Due to a system fault, I could not research occupations for occupations at this time. The LDS contains many references including 2 for Varese, Lombardy and 2 for Pisa and there were over 25 in America, mainly New York and California. Hope this is new information. I would be happy to do another search if you care to disclose the sources you have so far. Best wishes.Brian Symonds, Bristol, UK, (AIFHS no.10)
I think this is your Bertima Carris marriage record ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Burtamer CARRIS Sex: M Marriage(s): Spouse: Matilda WARREN Marriage: 15 May 1866 Nuneaton, Warwick, England However checking through the Italian records the Surname Carris does not come up, there are several french Carris, this makes me think that there must have been a variation on the Surname. If you have not already checked out the web page www.familysearch.com there are a lot more Carris for the UK. I have also checked the surname Carri and yes for this surname there are quiet a lot in Italy. Hello Jane, one starting point would be to type in Borg on the map on this site to see where the Borgs are situated throughout Italy. You could then use the Italian white pages and maybe write to some of those people. http://66.221.136.107/en/cognomi/ Good luck, Rod [email protected] <http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~rodsaunders> Cassino: Melaragni, Persechini, Lanna/Lanni, D'Agostino. Thanks for your interest - I have come to the conclusion that Campodolcino is the nearest I can get. The original spelling was from a translation into English of a handwritten letter in Italian. Perhaps the translator could not read the hand writing. Many thanks Brian in Bristol.
Very encouraging - thanks Maggie. Brian Bristol UK
