    1. Researching Carrara
    2. Jane Powell
    3. Hello listers, I have been researching my Italian ancestors for quite a while and have hit the proverbial brick wall. My gr-grandfather Amilcare PERUTELLI was born in Carrara, Tuscany in 1854. I have a copy of the baptism entry for the Church of S. Andrea Apostolo. His father came from Carrara, but his mother, Romana PIANINI was from a nearby town called Avenza. My first query is, would the parents have married in the groom's parish or the bride's? Secondly, the LDS films for Carrara do not cover the time period I'm looking for so I will need to write to the church, when I can identify which one it's likely to be. If this is not successful, does anyone have any advice regarding hiring an Italian researcher? Are there any bodies that regulate this area or does anyone have any experience of this? Thirdly, Amilcare Perutelli was a godson of Domenico FABBRICOTTI of the marble dynasty in Carrara. He came to Britain with Bernardo Fabbricotti as his marble agent and worked at Carrara Wharf in Chelsea. The Fabbricotti family have an interesting history, but most of it is written in Italian! Can anyone point me in the direction of any English language sources for researching the history of the family? Thanks in advance, Jane PS I have already tried to obtain various family history records from all the surrounding parishes near Carrara, but with no luck so far. I really need to narrow it down.

    3. Hello listers. A helpfull member of another list has sent me a new italian born GIUNTINI, found in the 1871 census. His first name was very clearly written down as Gauderzie. Could someone identify the original italian first name that could have been so transcribed? Raymond, in France.

    3. There are some returns of alien passengers in HO3 at National Archives but probably only for a later period, eg 1836 onwards. Slow to look through - very thick bound volumes of assorted shapes of paper and not many Italians in the one I sampled (Jan-Mar 1850). Here's the email in our list archives describing the article Elaine referred to. http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/textindices/A/ANGLO-ITALIAN+2002+497980233+F In case the URL doesn't work: Genealogist's Magazine Vol. 22, No. 5, March 1987, pp. 351-5 By Brian V.J. Meringo, entitled "Travellers through France: Records of cross-channel passengers at Boulogne, 1822-58 and related records elsewhere, this recommends ledgers kept at the Archives Communales at Boulogne listing passengers travelling to and from England. 3. Just a reminder that this weekend is the Society of Genealogists' Family History Show, with lectures, advice, and about 120 stands from family history societies, organisations and traders. It opens at 10am on Saturday at Horticultural Halls, Greycoats Street, Westminster, London SW1. Entry to the fair costs £6, but I have a few tickets available for £4 which I can sell on a first come first serve basis. The Anglo Italian FHS will have a stand on both days, with help advice and books and CDs for sale (including our new releases of over 40,000 births, deaths and marriages of Italians in Britain). Our AGM will be held at the same venue in room 31 at 2.30pm on Saturday. I look forward to seeing many of you there. Kind regards, Elaine -- Elaine Collins Chair, Anglo-Italian Family History Society 3 Calais Street London SE5 9LP 020 7274 7809 http://anglo-italianfhs.org.uk

    3. I think the only hope of finding records arrivals by ship is if they came on boats that originated outside of the Mediterranean, and just stopped off at an Italian port en route. For the many that walked though I believe there are some entry/exit records in France. There was an article about this the in the SoG's Genalogist journal some years back (and did I see someone had submitted some transcribed names from such a source?) Sorry don't have time to check the references at the moment, but it's another thought. Elaine -- Have you joined? It costs just £5 to become an email member.
