Boston States Migrations Family History Weekend, Friday June 11 - Sunday June 13, 2004 Waltham Massachusetts The "Boston States Migrations" includes more than 400 years of circular migrations between eastern Canada, New York and New England for a whole array of ethnic, religious, occupational and family groups. Many folks went west only to return to this circle of families that still go "over home", even if the homefolks say they are "from away"! Politics, war, trade, famine, disease, shipping practices, land, rivers, turnpikes, canals, railroads, timber, mining, the Industrial Revolution, the growth of both urban and farm communities created push/pull factors for group chain migrations. Collateral families, neighbors, co-workers and parish members created "sister communities", where resources in one location solve puzzles in another. Join us for a weekend of events and resources, featuring Sandra Devlin, Atlantic Canada Genealogy Columnist; Paul Bunnell, Loyalist Resources; Maureen Taylor, Photo Identification, Preservation, Heritage Albums and Scrapbooks; Sharon Howland, Washington County Maine Resources; PLUS! Family History tables, migration videos, vendors and regional history resources. Space is limited for the June 11 video replay of the 1999 Boston States Fair migration patterns, ships and railroad resource talks, as well as the June 13 Family and Group table reservations. Visit http://bostonstates.rootsweb.com/ and register on-line at http://www.GenealogyFair.com/2004BSFHF.htm CBC's Maritime Magazine recently devoted a half hour program to Sandra Devlin: "Missing Links" newspaper column has been helping Maritimers solve genealogical mysteries for almost a decade. If you have Real Audio, you can listen to the show at http://novascotia.cbc.ca/radio/maritimemagazine/archives/archive147.html Whether you are just getting started or need help with a particular problem, this is an opportunity to learn about resources or share with others. If you cannot attend, but would like your research interests posted, you may send a "Wanted Poster" (see example http://bostonstates.rootsweb.com/wanted+poster.jpg). Also, if your local society would like to send flyers, please address to GenealogyFair, 233 Lake Street, Waltham MA 02451 Canada Census Campaign information and petitions will be available for attendees to help resolve the overdue 1911 Census release! Hi listers Made good use of the Times newspaper free trial, and proved my Francesco MOSCATI was in Britain before his supposed arrival 1831. He advertised for pupils in The Times in 1818 and 1819. On the same page was another advertisement from a Mr VERONI, Professor of Italian Language. He advised his clients that he had moved address to 107 Mount Street, Grosvenor Square. Hope this helps someone, if not Ruth can keep it for records! Shane In Cairo --------------------------------- Yahoo! Messenger - Communicate instantly..."Ping" your friends today! > The London Times, Tuesday February 27, 1844; p1 Issue18543, Col A > Giuseppe Ghirardini Luigi Villora Varsi Wow! This one's my great great grandfather with correct father's name. He was baptised on 8 May 1824 so would have been 19. Giuseppe married in 1851 in Holborn and settled in Clerkenwell. I wasn't aware that Parma had military service then - or that Giuseppe and Luigi were in London so early. Giuseppe couldn't read and apparently his spoken English wasn't particularly good. Presumably this type of notice was intended to be read by priests or their more affluent parishioners and passed on to the missing men. I wonder if he ever did go back for military service. He was listed in 1856 in Villora as "abroad" so it is reasonable to assume he had been there recently. Does anyone know anything about military records for the Duchy of Parma, pre-unification? I am resending part of a post as I didn't receive any response to the following questions. 1. I have been researching my Italian ancestors for quite a while and have hit the proverbial brick wall. My gr-grandfather Amilcare PERUTELLI was born in Carrara, Tuscany in 1854. I have a copy of the baptism entry for the Church of S. Andrea Apostolo. His father, Domenico, came from Carrara, but his mother, Romana PIANINI was from a nearby town called Avenza. My first query is, would the parents have married in the groom's parish or the bride's? 2. Does anyone have any experience or advice regarding hiring a researcher in Italy? Maybe there is some sort of regulating body which could recommend a reputable researcher? Thanks for any suggestions, Jane

Hello list I hope that this may be of interest to someone. Colin ----- Original Message ----- From: Susan McPhedran To: 'Colin Moretti' Sent: Tuesday, April 27, 2004 2:19 AM Subject: Spam Alert: London Times re Duchy/Duchess of Parma Colin - the following is of possible interest to your group. I had free access to the digitalized version of the London Times for one day. My interest is the SCARPENTIS but thought others would be interested. The names were listed in French in 1843 but Italian in 1844. I can not guarantee the spelling, especially with the 2nd entry as it is tricky to read online. I have no idea at what age these men became eligible for conscription. I am assuming that the names were derived from the parish census and/or baptismal records. With regards to the SCARPENTIS, I do not have any information on a Louis/Luigi with sons Filipo or Giovanni. I have been through the parish records for Montegroppo and had tentatively identified a Giovanni/John Scarpenti as the brother of Antonio Scarpenti, and son of Giovanni SCARPENTI. Giovanni died at the London Fever Hospital in 1856. Hi Raymond > ... very clearly written down as > Gauderzie. Could someone identify the original italian first name that > could have been so transcribed? I wonder if despite the clarity of the name whether it could still possibly be interpreted differently by thinking of the shape of the word (eg g for z). Also "the substitution of 'z' or 'x' for 'g' is common in Venice and Emilia-Romagna" http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~torchia/names/italiannames.htm Some enumerators made quite a mess of Italian names. Luigi sometimes looks like Liugi with the dot clearly and neatly placed above the wrong letter or even Flugi, Govani, etc. The enumerator may have had preconceived ideas -eg that all Italian names ended in an ie sound so that he didn't hear the o. Looking at Gauderzie, zi doesn't seem to occur in names unless followed by o - zio. au is not very common either. Gua is much more common. Using the failrly long list of italian given names on http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~torchia/names/italiannames.htm, some suggestions for Gauderzie: Galeazzo Guadagno Gianluigi or even Eustazio or Constanzo Hope you can use these ideas to reinterpret the name if no-one can pin it down any better. The posting address for the list is anglo-italian-L@rootsweb.com _________________________________________________ I have just joined the AIFHS, I don't know if this is the right palce to startbut I am interested in finding out further information concerning the Ciccone family. My grandfather Ciro Ciccone was born in 1896 in Saviano,Napoli, ( his father was Francesco Ciccone) he came to England and later married Gina Fazzani in 1929. He died in 1944 leaving a wife and two sons John and Frank. I am trying to find out how and when he came to England. At the time of his marriage, he lived in Holborn and is listed as a master Caterer.
