I have deleted by mistake the letter from someone telling where St Peters Italian church is. Would you repeat it please. Also are there any interesting places in and around London with special interest to Italy my niece is on her OE and would love to visit them Thank you . Christine NZ researching TEMPERO / TEMPRO
Hi Christine Don't forget to tell your niece that the Italian church is not open all the time. Obviously it is on Sundays and usually they are cleaning it early morning on Sats. Best to phone for info before making the journey. Nearest underground station is Farringdon, just a short walk from there. Not much left of the Italian quarter though it's nice to wander through the little streets and alleys to get the feel of the place. The Italian school is no longer there but the building was on the corner of the street near the church - well, the building is there (or was last time I went there) but not the school. When is your niece coming over - in mid July there is the Italian procession on a Sunday which is really great to see. The Society will have a stall there and visitors are welcome. Not yet, I'm afraid! The registers are held at the church, and you have to make an appointment to view. At the moment you can't even do that, as they're redecorating and the books are packed away. But we have a trusty team of transcribers from the Anglo-Italian Family History Society who will be back on the case as soon as they're allowed. The plan is to organise a look-up service as we complete volumes. If anyone wants to volunteer, either for transcribing, or typing up, contact Kay Lorenzato. Best wishes Elaine -- Have you joined? There was quite a lot of intermarriage between the Irish and the Italians - the registers of St Peter's Italian church are full of Irish names, particularly in the early days when there weren't many Italian women around for the immigrant workers to marry. The shared Catholic faith brought them into social contact, and in places like Clerkenwell, as fellow members of the immigrant underclass, they lived close together. My Alzapiedi married an O'Meara, for example. Best wishes, Elaine -- Have you joined? It costs just £5 to become an email member. Is it possible to obtain access to the St Peter's Italian Church records - on the internet or by any other means? Joan.
Patricia: Intermarriage seems to have been very common amongst the Italian and Irish communities in Clerkenwell in Victorian times. Also, looking glass frame maker was a common occupation in that area. For example, my ancestor John MOMBELLI, variously described in records as looking glass maker or gilder & carver married Jane BUCKLEY nee DUKE who was Irish. You do not give Charles's wife's maiden name but it is quite possible that one or other had Italian connections somewhere along the line. Bear in mid also that the area was somewhat unhealthy and early deaths and remarriage of the survivor led to step-relationships Derek Woodman ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mrs Julie Goucher" <anglers.rest@virgin.net> To: <ANGLO-ITALIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: 25 May 2004 22:29 Subject: [Anglo-Italian] Fw: The Irish Connection > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Lindsley, Patricia" <PLindsley@buckscc.gov.uk> > To: "ANGLO-ITALIAN-D-request (E-mail)" <ANGLO-ITALIAN-D-request@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2004 10:00 PM > Subject: The Irish Connection > > > > My ancestor Charles GALEY/GAILY gives his birth place, on the 1871 Census, as > Ireland. Patricia, I am descended from a family called Bregazzi, who came from the Como area and started life in the UK as carvers, gilders, looking glass frame makers etc, typical for immigrants from the Como region. One of them, Sebastiano Ambrogio Bregazzi, born near Como, started life in England in Brick Lane, London in 1861, then got married to Elizabeth Kelly in 1866 in Leeds. Kelly is a good Irish name! Elizabeth's father was, according to the marriage certificate, Patrick Kelly (you can't get more Irish than that), Frame Maker and Gilder. Sebastian and Elizabeth then moved to Dublin, where they founded the Irish branch of the Bregazzis, still flourishing today. I don't know if that helps at all, but it does show that you could be Irish and a frame maker!
