Andrews was my great uncle. I never heard the J standing for James. Aunt Vernie said he just used the J. when the men had to register for the draft and only had a first name. I too have had problems going back past James A. Andrews. In one of the census records that I found it stated that James A. Andrews married to Margie Mullins was born in North Carolina. Aunt Vernie was a real fisty old lady. She quilted for years. when she got to where she couldn't stand to hoe her garden she simply crawled up and down the rows to weed. l have many fond memories of them. My grandfather was James the brother of Jessee.
