Notes for MELVA JONES: Clipping from paper, NAVAL LORREY KILLS LITTLE GIRL, A Naval motor lorry, driven by Frederick Charle Pratt proceeding through Canal Walk, Portsmouth yesterday afternoon, and when near Milford Road knocked down Melva Jones aged five years, of 33 Holloway Street, who stepped off the sidewalk without warning. The driver did all he could to pull up and avert an accident, but the child received injuries which proved fatal. She was dead when admitted to the Royal Hospital. She was at play with other children when she darted into the road near a surface air raid shelter and came into collision with a naval motor lorry. She was the younger daughter of Stoker Petty Officer and Mrs. Geroge Jones of 33 Holloway St., Portsmouth. Petty Officer Jones is well known in all the naval ports as a football referee.
