    1. [ANDREWS-L] Charles Henry Andrews AKA Charles Henry, USA
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Wm.2ADEB/2625 Message Board Post: Well, I have finally found my long lost Great Grandfather. A very interesting story if I must say so. Anybody care to add to the story let me know. Tahnk you Charles Henry Andrews, (CHA) born Nov. 4, 1844 in Bridgeport, CT. Father- Lucius Andrews (born between 1810 & 1820, died ?), Mother-Jane Palmer / Webster (2 different sources, 2 different last names) (born between 1810 & 1820. died ?). CHA moved to Franklin, Delaware County, NY and enlisted in Company “D”, 144th Regiment New York Volunteers on Sept. 27, 1862 at the age of 18. His height was 5’ 6”; his complexion was dark, eyes dark and hair brown. (This information is in the enrollment log in the Delaware County Bldg. in Delhi, NY). CHA was stationed in several Southern towns during the war. Attached to the “U.S.S. Augusta” gun boat and ended up in South Carolina. Promoted to Corporal Jan 1, 1865 while detached on the gunboat and remained unto the end of the war. I requested this information from the National Achieves, Washington, DC and received a complete package in early November 2002. Upon discharge on July 1865 in Elmira, NY, CHA returned to Franklin, NY. On Sept 4, 1865 he married Mary Chamberlin by Rev. T.S. Potwin. Mary Chamberlin born Mar 9, 1844, died Dec 29, 1911, buried in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, NY along with her parents. Her father was Clark Chamberlin (1815-1880); mother was Calphurnia Whitney (1819-1907). CHA and his wife, Mary had a total of 7 children. The 1880 U.S. Census shows Charles (CHA), Mary and 6 of their children. Julia (Lou) wasn’t born until June 1882. 1. Fred L. Andrews born Dec 14, 1867 died Dec 24, 1953. Buried in Vestal Hills Cemetery, Vestal, Broome County, and NY. Married Jennie Betts born Nov 29, 1870 died Oct 10, 1957, Buried with Fred. They had 6 children. Harry 1890, Mertie 1892, Louis 1896, Audrey 1897 and Wilford & Alfred Hess (twins) 1900. 2. Antoinette (Nettie) Andrews born Aug 8, 1872 died Nov 30, 1959. Buried in the Vestal Hills Cemetery, Vestal, NY. Married Charles A. Wilkerson. born Jun 22, 1868 died Jan 18, 1936. Buried with Nettie. They had 2 children Calphurnia (Callie) 1902 and Victor O. 1906. 3. Laura (Lottie) Andrews born 1874 died? Married Archie Brock. They had 3 children. Mary 1894, Isabelle 1896 and Julia 1905. 4. Clark C. Andrews born Dec 1, 1876 died Mar 5, 1948. Buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Otego, Otsego County, and NY. Married Lulu Doliver born 1882 died 1960. Buried with Clark. They had 3 children. Dorothy 1906, Steward 1912 and Donald 1916-1923. Donald and Dorothy Andrews Hamilton are also buried in the Evergreen Cemetery. 5. William C. Andrews (my Grandfather) who also took off on his family like CHA and remarried 2 more times. Born Dec 16, 1877 died Dec 7, 1971. William was buried in the Biglerville Cemetery, Biglerville, PA, near Gettysburg with his 3rd wife, Helen. He married Marcia Noble Bostwick Nov 11, 1901. Marcia died Apr 9, 1973 and is buried with her parents, Ammon and Annis (Yendes) Bostwick in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Delhi, Delaware County, NY. William then married Vergie B? and finally married Helen Casey in 1967 at the age of 92. Only 1 child (thank God) was born to Marcia and William, Elmer Lindsley Andrews born Jul 15, 1902 died Aug 11, 1996 (my father). He was buried in the Riverhurst Cemetery in Endicott, Broome County, and NY along with his wife, Helen (my mother). When William married his 3rd wife, Helen, it really aggravated my mother, Helen. My mother thought there should only be ONE Helen Andrews. (a little humor here). William had no other children in his other 2 mar! riages. 6. Calphurnia (Calla) Jane Andrews born Apr 14, 1880 died Jul 16, 1945. Married Charles S. Walters born Oct 13, 1873 died Aug 5, 1961. Both are buried in the Vestal Hills Cemetery. They had 3 children. Floyd 1900, Harold 1901 and Marion 1904 7. Julia (Lou) Andrews born Jun 23, 1882 died Feb 9, 1930. After CHA disappeared in late 1881 or early 1882 before Lou was born, Julia (Lou) was given to away to be raised by the VanCott Family of Unadilla, NY, owner of the VanCott Silo Company. No record of an official adoption was ever found and all records of her always state the she was an Andrews. She married Walter L. Johnson, brother of George F. Johnson, founder of the Endicott-Johnson Shoe Company. Walter also owned a shoe company called the Walter L. Johnson Belt Company. He supplied inside leather parts for shoes to his brother, George F. Johnson. Lou Andrews Johnson is buried in the Riverhurst Cemetery, Endicott, NY. They had 4 children. Vivian 1909, Mabel 1911 (still alive), William 1912 and Jane Louise 1919. Walter Johnson remarried and is buried in the family mausoleum at the Blue Hills Cemetery in Braintree, MA. This story I heard from Helen Henry Wright in November 2002, is why and when CHA left his first wife, Mary. CHA told the story that he was in bed sick and overheard Mary telling her mother, Calphurnia, that they were going to pour boiling water into CHA ear. Upon hearing that, CHA that night quietly left and never returned. In later years CHA told his Virginia family that he never knew he had a seventh child, Julie (Lou). This concludes that Julie (Lou) being born on Jun 23, 1882, CHA must have disappeared either late 1881 or early 1882. CHA also told his Virginia family that he was an officer and double agent in the Civil War. When CHA disappeared from Franklin, according to documents and conversations with Billy Henry, Doris Young and Helen Henry Wright between Wednesday Nov. 20, 2002 and Friday Nov. 22, 2002, the following history of CHA continues. CHA moves around United States including Helena, Montana and finally ends up in Pittsburgh, PA. He then married Agnes L! aughlin; (married another woman whose last name contains “LIN”). He married Agnes on February 16, 1888 under the name of Charles Henry. He dropped his last name, Andrews. They had 2 additional children. 8. Charles Clayton Henry, born Jan 10, 1889 died July 1964. He married Mary Elizabeth Oliver and had 8 children. Henrietta 1912-1998, Ruth 1915-1920, Helen Henry Wright 1917(still alive), Kenneth 1919 (still alive), Gerald 1921-1978, Marjorie Henry Gheen 1923 (still alive), Richard 1923 (still alive), Patricia 1927 (still alive). I have contact with Helen and Richard at present. The photos that are included are from Richard. 9. Anna Henry born Jan 19, 1896, died 20 Oct 1954. Married William R. Young. They had 2 children, Lynn, a son 1916 - 1957 and a daughter, Doris Young who never married and is still alive. A great bit of information has been from Doris in November 2002. Charles Henry added a middle initial “L” and went by either Charlie or “C L”. His grandchildren called him “Grandpa”. He referred back to Charles Henry Andrews after his wife. Agnes died on Feb 22, 1932. He used his original name when applying for Civil War Pensions and Disabilities Applications in 1933. One of the questions on his application asked if he had any permanent marks or scars on his person. He replied that on his left forearm was a tattoo “ CHA” Co D, 144 N.Y. Vol.”. Helen told me that CHA lived with them on Lee Street and she remembers seeing the tattoo on his arm. Another question asked on his application was if he had any record of his marriage to Agnes Laughlin? His answer was none. Also asked was he previously married and his answer was NO. He is buried in Big Stone Gap, near Appalachia, VA next to his wife. Agnes. The name “Andrews” is not on his grave stone. Conversations with CHA granddaughters, either Doris Young or Helen Henry Wright told me that Clark and one of his sisters came down to Virginia in the 30’s to visit their father and his Virginia family. At a later time, they went up to New York State to visit them, possibly in Endicott or Albany but they can’t remember where or when. This concludes that the New York Andrews’ and the Virginia Andrews’ knew of each other’s existence in the 30’s. Rodney S. Andrews February 7, 2003
