I haven't read "Andersonville: The Last Depot" yet but I did see the TNT movie a couple of times. I have the book and hope to find time to read it soon. Since I have spent the past 14 years searching for information on an ancestor who was at Andersonville for almost the entire time it exsisted, I am very interested in learning more about it. I have read a book about Civil War prisons, that I recommend every one to read. It's "PROTALS TO HELL: Military Prisons of the Civil War" by Lonnie R. Speer, ISBN 0-8117-0334-7. If everyone would read this book, they would have a better understanding of how conditions in both northern and southern prisons got to be as bad as Andersonville and Elmira. Until I read this book, I had only seen the movie and had what I learned in school. I used to wonder how my southern ancestors could allow people to be treated so badly. (My northern ancestors weren't here yet, so I couldn't wonder about them. :) ) Reading that book opened my eyes to the real horrors that took place in both the north and the south. It also opened my eyes to how the war was perceived by both sides and because of that perception, neither side was prepared to have prisoners of war. I am looking forward to those who have more knowledge than I, sharing it so I can better understand the life of one of my husband's ancestors.
