    3. Larry, I'm glad you found your relative listed at Andersonville. Libby prison was used primarily for officers and Belle Isle prison was used for holding all enlisted or non-commissioned officers (NCO's-Sgt's,etc.). You might want to go to Barnes & Noble and purchase a book called "Portals to Hell - Military Prisons of the Civil War" by Larry R. Speer. It is published by Stackpole Books, 5067 Ritter Rd., Mechanicsburg, Pa. 17055. It is very informative regarding prisons in both the North and South and tells how and why prisoners were moved from one prison to another. There was a third prison in Richmond besides Libby and Belle Isle. It was said to have been much worse than the other two. It was known as Castle Thunder and was used to house political prisoners, confederate deserters, women, blacks, and later, federal prisoners. Anyway, I hope this helps you. Ron Smith Spokane, Wa.
