Hi Ellie, Did you try checking the 1850 and 1860 Census Indexes and comparing them with 1870 to see which Joseph is missing? Perhaps that would give you a lead on where he lived if not in Lawrence County. Also, I have run across the situation where a man who was entering the service would make a Will, so perhaps you might check those. If Lawrence County has Will Indexes on-line, or even better yet, if they are microfilmed by LDS, you might read all the Vaughn Wills and see if you can find a mention of your fellow and/or his widow.
