"Alexahunt," I want to say thanks to you for posting that particular assessment because it corresponds precisely w/ my own impressions. I would've spent a lot more time-----and likely many more words----trying to encapsulate my own similar impression. Well stated! Marvel did allow a hint of anger to prevail throughout the book (I agree) yet, while never fully agreeing with it, was able myself to read beyond it after just a short while. I too was rather surprised by it's rather "sympathetically- southern perspective" but-----upon completing it-----I realized that Bill Marvel had actually given a divisive CW subject a much-needed degree of balance and for that, I'm thankful. We should be careful since other ANDERSONVILLE subscribers, like Bob Farrell, are now reading the book; I think it's both important and valuable that those readers form their *own* opinions.... Great dialog, folks! Anyone ready to propose that we "elect" a representative to contact the NPS at Andersonville and begin the ambitious task of re-creating a complete "incarceration" list? Just wondering! Once this list grows some more, it may well prove to be a worthy (even manageable) task.... My own personal interest in Andersonville is both historical & genealogical. And I *know* from experience that there are *many* genealogists out there who are dying to have a complete and accurate "Andersonville" database available for searching on-line! 'Just another of the many outlets this List could take if interested, that's all... Greg Reeves ANDERSONVILLE-L Listowner greg@rapidnet.com

    2. Ok Greg-- You made me to go to the library and get a copy of "Andersonville, The Last Depot" which I will read slowly as these old tired eyes will only stand so much at any one time. I have read the introduction and I am not sure his opinions may not clash with mine. I say this to open up a dialogue. I have visited A'ville and have felt the misery in the air. No one can experience this and not say this was not wrong for warriors, Blue or Gray. I have read all that I have come across in the CW magazines and the on line newsgroups and have been forced to read for balance, Holme's The Elmira Prison Camp" and have concluded that nineteenth century ignorance greatly contributed to the deplorable conditions, both Confederate and Union. My belief is that either side, in hindsight, would repeat their mistakes The one true blessing of Andersonville and Americas Civil War Prisons is that we have learned. Our opponents in WW II, Korea and most recently Viet Nam failed to understand that prisoners are human and long after the guns are silent, the anger of their treatment leaves a taste that never goes away. The above is from a confirmed lurker with the hope that a dialogue will develop we all can enjoy. I look forward to your best shots. Bob Farrell Researching the 123d & 169th NYV

    2. Hi Glad to see an Andersonville newsgroup here on line. In re. to Last Depot, I did read the book, and at first, I didn't like it, but as I read further, I found that it was nice to read a book that looked at Andersonville from another perspective. The author did seem to convey a feeling of anger throughout the book tho, which I found disconcerting. I came from the MacKinlay Kantor school of Andersonville books......which certainly expressed the opposite feeling of Last Depot Alexahunt@aol.com

I haven't read "Andersonville: The Last Depot" yet but I did see the TNT movie a couple of times. I have the book and hope to find time to read it soon. Since I have spent the past 14 years searching for information on an ancestor who was at Andersonville for almost the entire time it exsisted, I am very interested in learning more about it. I have read a book about Civil War prisons, that I recommend every one to read. It's "PROTALS TO HELL: Military Prisons of the Civil War" by Lonnie R. Speer, ISBN 0-8117-0334-7. If everyone would read this book, they would have a better understanding of how conditions in both northern and southern prisons got to be as bad as Andersonville and Elmira. Until I read this book, I had only seen the movie and had what I learned in school. I used to wonder how my southern ancestors could allow people to be treated so badly. (My northern ancestors weren't here yet, so I couldn't wonder about them. :) ) Reading that book opened my eyes to the real horrors that took place in both the north and the south. It also opened my eyes to how the war was perceived by both sides and because of that perception, neither side was prepared to have prisoners of war. I am looking forward to those who have more knowledge than I, sharing it so I can better understand the life of one of my husband's ancestors. 1. Welcome!
    2. Greg Reeves
    3. Hi Everyone! Welcome to the new ANDERSONVILLE mailing list! I'm glad that you chose to subscribe. Started just this week, there already 21 of us subscribed...Consider yourself a "charter subscriber!" As such, I'd like to ask a favor: this mailing list (like some Internet *newsgroups* we all frequent) has the potential of quickly becoming little more than an ongoing "North vs. South" flame----I intend to prevent that. I want this new mailing list to include "high-minded" discussions, the sharing of scholarly works, reviews of books etc. Okay? Clearly, I'm going to need everyone's help in keeping our List above perpetual flaming, so I need a commitment from each of you other 20 early subscribers that you'll help me keep our new ANDERSONVILLE mailing list above all that... Having said that, I'd like to encourage each of you (if you've not already done so) to visit the biographical-tribute page I created for my GGG Uncle, Lt. Thomas B. Reeves, Co. C, 10th Indiana Cavalry, who was captured on 17 DEC 1864 at Hollow Tree Gap, TN, and subsequently imprisoned at Andersonville until 18 MAR 1865 (a relatively "short stay" there). His page can be seen at URL: http://www.rapidnet.com/~greg/Tom I'd like to know too how many of you'all may have read William Marvel's (1994, ISBN # 0-8078-2152-7. North Carolina Press) book entitled, "Andersonville: The Last Depot?" I rather liked it but, because I'm not an expert, I'd be interested in hearing other's assessment of Marvel's treatment-----so, anyone else read it? The degree to which TNT's "Andersonville" original movie script followed Marvel's text suggests that either he served as a consultant to the producer/director, or the book was a primary reference. Can anyone verify this observation/supposition? 'Gotto go! Again, I'm glad that everyone's chosen to subscribe! I don't intend to 'dictate' here what about Andersonville is discussed, I mean by what I wrote above to suggest that-----to the best of our abilities-----that we avoid flame wars that tend to persuade nonone and serve only to needlessly fill-up already bulging E-mail boxes. 3. OK LET'S GET THE BALL ROLLING HERE. No I did not see the movie, I saw enough horror at Dachau Laberation with Patton. Is there a list of prisoners someplace? I am looking for two brothers Lawrence WATSON, who died shortly after returning to MO and George Wiley WATSON who survived until c 1874 in MO. These two also were young boys on the Cherokee Trail of Tears and lied about their DIB to serve. How much can the human body take?? Thank you and glad to see this forum come on line.
