    1. Re: Giving Thanks to those who helped me find a diary.
    2. Judy Wick
    3. John C. Oester, via the Andersonville-L website John, Thank you for looking for my ancestor, even though he wasn't listed. I also wanted to thank you for generously sharing the list of soldiers mentioned in the diary. It was most kind of you to take the time to type all those names onto the Andersonville webpage. I'm sure their are many people out there who will find a connection. Your kindness and generousity are greatly appreciated. I've posted this response to the website as a public thank you from all of us for your hard work. If you don't mind, I would like to pass your list on to a few other websites so it will reach more people. May I have your permission to do so? Judy Clark-Wick JWick@compuserve.com

    3. Sandy, I don't know if anyone answered your query yet. Ask the National Archives to send you his Prisoner of War Record. It will show where he was a prisoner and mine even told the date and place where he was captured. Judy Clark-Wick JWick@compuserve.com

    3. Hello All, I had a cousin who died at Andersonville, Aug 16, 1864. In his mother's pension request papers are some letters that he sent home. He wrote one on 20 Dec 1863 from a prison in Richmond, VA. It looks like "Scotts Prison third floor, Ricmond Virginia". Does anyone have any information on this prison? I know about Belle's Isle and Libby. He was captured at the Battle of Chickamauga. I understand a lot of the prisoners were processed through Libby in Richmond. Thank you, Wilma

    3. Christina, Write to the National Archives and ask them to send the forms you need to request Military Records on your Civil War ancestor. Then when you send in the forms, ask for ALL the Military Records including Pension and Prisoner of War Records. The Prisoner of War Records will detail which prison he was in, including the dates, and mine even had the place my g-grandfather was captured. That would be the best way to validate he was at Andersonville. Recently, I had to send copies of the Military Record and Prisoner of War Record to Andersonville to get my ancestor listed as a prisoner there. Some people may have been missed on the records at Andersonville. The National Archives Records are your absolute proof. Judy Clark-Wick JWick@compuserve.com

    3. Happy Thanksgiving to all my Internet friends, I hope you don't mind, but I thought I pass along a bit of history about Thanksgiving Day. While we all know about the pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving, many may not know when it became a National Holiday. In 1864, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November a National Day of Thanksgiving. Union Army cooks prepared 120,000 turkeys and chicken dinners to be served to Union troops in the trenches at Petersburg. Only a short distance away, Confederate soldiers had little to nothing, yet they showed respect by not firing a shot that day. At Andersonville Prison, soldiers of the Union Army were slowly starving to death and dying. And so began our first National Day of Thanksgiving. Source: "The Civil War", An Illustrated History By Geoffrey C. Ward with Ric Burns and Ken Burns. This Thanksgiving Day, let us all remember to give thanks to our ancestors who fought and suffered in so many wars. I am so proud to be descended from such noble and strong individuals. 3. John, Does the diary contain only names of dying soldiers or does it contain names of ANY soldier he administered to at Andersonville? I am curious if my g-grandfather's name appears, although he survived, he came home weighing only 75 lbs. which sounds a little sickly to me. His name was John M. Clark, 60 th Ohio, Co. C, age 20. Where did you finally locate the book? Judy Clark-Wick JWick@compuserve.com Have a Happy Thanksgiving Day.

    1. Found Diary.
    2. Hello List, For anyone who missed the query I posted to the list on November 18th, please let me update and share with you how valuable the Andersonville list is as a research tool. Below is my original query followed by the results: I just subscribed this evening and would like to know if anyone among us knows how to find this book? I even called the Andersonville museum library and they never heard of it. I would really like to get ahold of it. PERSONAL NARRATIVES/BIOGRAPHIES Clavreul, H. Diary of...with the Names of Dying Federal Soldiers to Whom he Ministered at Andersonville, Ga., July and August 1864. n.p.: CT Assoc of Ex- POW, 1910. E612A5C55. Today when I opened my mail box I was delighted to find a brown envelope from: US Army Military History Institute Historical Reference Branch 22 Ashburn Drive, Carlisle Barracks Carlisle, PA 17013-5008 The Reference Librarian there copied the 18 page book on Nov 24th and I received it today, Nov 25th. Here are other libraries that also have the Diary in their Special Collections Department: Duke University Library, NC Auburn University at Montgomery Yale University Library, CT Connecticut State Library Trinity College, CT Boston College, MA, US Naval Academy, Annapolis MD I received an email today that the USNaval Academy is also sending me a copy of the Diary. Finding the diary was made possible by good folks like you all, who are always willing to lend guidance and direction. Thanks Again John C Oester

    3. Hello, I am new to this list. My GG Grandfather Jesse H. Lowry served in the 7th Tennessee Calvary, Company B, and survived Andersonville Prison. I would like to know what kind of records that I might find. I have his military records but it really doesn't give much information as far as being a prisoner of war. Are there more records pertaining to his prison stay that are obtainable? If so, where would I locate the information? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Sincerely, Sandy (Lowry) McMunn
